I give up with Azir, any advice? :'(

Hi there, plat V noob here. Just wanted to know tips to play Azir, he got me out of gold (vladimir too) but now I just can't make it work, I know he is a late game champ but is Azir one of the weakest mid laners at the moment? You would think that his range and sustained dmg would be good but he is so squishy that you can't get close enough to AA with soldiers, as soon as you get closer, someone jumps on you and you are forced to run away or to ult.

Funny story: Almost 2 months ago I was playing azir with item 3115 Nashors item 3151 Lyandris item 3135 Void staff item 3110 FROZEN HEART item 3001 ABYSSAL MASK and berserker boots or ninja tabi, and it was actually working lololo.

How and why? I was able to AA with soldiers at medium to long distance without getting killed by the mage or an assasin, high damage tanks like darius or gragas (his ult deals a f**ck ton of dmg to squishy champs like azir:c) were kinda useless with that build. Not the best build but hey.... desperate times call for desperate measuresAzir item 3070 item 3070

I don't play Azir. However, I can tell you that at Platinum and above, those champions you do good with in Bronze, Silver, Gold become harder to execute because they then need a better team composition.

So have a better team composition that supports Azir. As for not dying fast or whatever.. HELLO.. He's a mid laner. He's not a tank. If he was tanky and could survive everything, then that would just be the road to challenger.

Just play more passive, I assume you been more aggressive with him in the lower elyos.

If you want my 2 Cents in this one, change lyandris into a Rylais and consider zhonyas instead of a frozen heart.

Azir is the most difficult midlaner to pull out because playing him is more chess than 2 junglers' worth, Azir has ultra annoying Poke, great sieging potential, surprisingly amazing lategame burst, disturbs any teamcomp if you can pull his Shuffle right and threatens to make enemies commit mistakes by zoning with his soldiers, but Controlling him is a lot harder than anyone else is and unlike other unit-control champions like Orianna or zoning champions like Syndra (sorry mate, just the best examples i got lmao) Azir has no self-defence Tools at all, Orianna can call her ball back to shield herself, at an speedy rate too. Syndra got a good disengage.

Azir? His only defence spell can accidentally underline the garuantee of your death inlane because he dashes to the nearest soldier you have, and quite often that very soldier will stand right BEHIND the champion chasing you.

BUT i think if you managed to get into plat with him, then you are mostly Aware of all that, but where you are lacking would be the sufficient damage and dispositioning threat. A Rylais makes a lot better work on azir because it adds a 20% slow to the 25% from his Q allowing you to hit the enemy a lot more and chase them easier. While Lyandris is not all that bad, you can only make very limited use of it's passive.

Change your Frozen heart into an Zhonyas, you still get cooldowns and armor but you also get some good damage and a potentially lifesaving stasis. Abyssal mask is debatable, it could work but i would rather switch it with either a Rabbadons or a Banshees, depending on your situation. banshees if your team has a weaker initiation so you can dive without getting pushed out, and rabbadons if they got more squishies for you to nuke them.

Your main issue is your Build, you have way too much generality and trade utility for effectivity.

Hmm some things that might help:

  • His soldier damage early game is ridiculously low without AP. I highly suggest running flat AP glyphs + quints, and 4/5 AS marks. Otherwise it's just sad his soldiers deal as much damage as a regular auto :T. (They recently gave all ranged champs a base scaling MR so not having MR glyphs isn't that bad, and the changes to Banshee made it a pretty nice item on him if you do need MR, allowing his risky plays lategame like Shuriman Shuffle to be a little safer with the Spell Shield it grants.)
  • Don't go Nashor's Tooth first item. The build path is simply too punishing (30 AP and 35% AS for 2k gold? no thank you). Instead, go for Banshee/Zhonya if you need them specifically for the matchup, otherwise get Rylais instead. The recent "nerfs" to it actually changed nothing for Azir passive-wise (since his soldiers attacks were AoE in the first place), and the reduced cost (along with reduced base stats, ofcourse) just allow him now to reach a power spike earlier. One of the few champions this change was actually beneficial, or can be beneficial if you abuse it early.
  • Also, Berserker's Greaves > Sorcerer's Shoes. You can take an early Dagger if the lack of AS very early bothers you when not rushing Nashor's, as mentioned above.
  • Summoner spells: Unless you know you won't be able to kill your lane opponent, take Ignite. Yes, Ignite, not Barrier. You know how Azir's full combo is most of the times just not enough to finish someone off (unless they were very low); Ignite just increases your kill potential by so much during the early-mid game it's too good to pass. Also, Flash/Ignite are the highest win rate summoner spells for Azir according to statistics sites. So yeah. Ignite! Yee.
  • Cheesing with early skill order! Firstly, if you feel like you're good enough with aggressive drifting into the enemy's face so that the E will also proc when hitting your lane opponent, consider taking a point in E level 4 if you think there's a good chance for some aggressive play there. Why? E gives you a better damage increase than Q (30 instead of 20), along with a better shield when hitting a target - a level 2 E will give you 120HP shield, which can easily turn around a 1v1 early. Along with Ignite as suggested above, this can make some really good early kill cheese (yum!) that people don't expect. Secondly, If you hate not having AS early (again... maybe it's just me >^> but I do hate it), also take an extra point early in W; the passive is nearly a Dagger worth of AS. So either level 4 if you don't decide to take E level 4, or level 5 if you do. Leveling Q is mainly used for the CD (since the damage increase is just 20 per level, pitiful) so you can keep repositioning your soldiers, and this is nowhere near maximized early game where you don't spam spells too much, so you won't be losing much by not maxing Q early.

Hmm not much else to say. Didn't address anything mechanical since if I understood you correctly you played him enough to know him pretty well. If not, just keep playing him (if you want to, ofcourse). He's a pretty hard champ and statistics sites do show that there's a massive increase in win rate with games played (from 43% to 52%).
