This is a message to Riot.

IF IT'S NOT BROKEN, DON'T FIX IT.

Repeat this 3 times before you go to sleep, and when you wake up. Say it as a prayer before you eat your meals. Use it as your secret code to tell if someone else is a Riot employee. Do whatever you can to keep this in mind when you're thinking of doing more game changes.

We're tired of change for the sake of change when you have so much left to fix.

I don'T understand the gp care to explain I barely see him anywhere

Wolfram Oxford16 votes

Gangplank changes were decent. He received a lot of nerfs mainly because of his global ultimate and how well it was working in professional play. To be honest his ultimate was a lot better post-rework, but his barrels don't really bring much to the table besides enhancing his Q's range and AoE. That's just my opinion.

bulldoggamer14 votes

Don't forget the insane waveclear. He's a top 5(ish) waveclear champ now.

Crowe Stalker9 votes

While you do make a good point, I have to disagree because his barrels proc sheen and critical hits ON TOP OF IGNORING 50% OF ARMOR.

God damn Cancer against Tank Melees.

AbrahamBaconham4 votes

To be fair, what was he before? Even more gimmicky, almost to the point where the only optimal way to play him was to stack crit on top of crit and Q people for days.

Delioth4 votes

Don't forget Shiv + Hydra so your Q went from "CSing tool and mild harassment" to "AoE Mixed damage Nuke".

Blackstone0112 votes

I mean it was a 60% armor pen AoE AA slow that could crit, so it did, and still does, bring quite a bit to the table, even after nerfing it.

Disagree on that one, as if anything this entire game is "based" on feast or famine. Get any character far enough ahead of their laning opponent, and they'll almost always do extremely well. Old fiora was much the same, only that her counterplay if she got 3-4 kills ahead made her almost impossible to outdamage.

Mecha MaIphite7 votes

I would be okay with that if old Fiora actually took skill

DJ S0NA5 votes

Mordekaiser was just sad, Fiora was just a solo queue stomper and made it a solo laner stomper, Gangplank was made better, but too much power he contains with his barrels.

Velkoz is the biggest example of this, for me. Widely viewed as one of the most balanced champions, and since 6.9 he's already had one change to his ult, with another on the PBE.

And the other point is:

If it IS broken, fix it. Riot's love taps to broken things like Zed and Lucian are incredibly frustrating.

Elikain16 votes

Vel"Koz was not nerfed or buffed, they made him stick out as a true damage dealer after his passive was applied. Before this, he was basically just a mid range mage that was supposed to spam his abilities 24/7 in order to constantly apply his passive. It means that his thematic was cool and it was relevant but wasn't completely fitting for him because it was bland - hence his changes to the passive and ult dealing true damage on targets that were passive procced 3 times.

I should know, i mained him. I welcomed this change with open arms.

#TL;DR

Vel'Koz wasn't fixed, his strength was added in and accentuated. Now you have a reason to pick him and not pass him up for someone else (like Lux or Lulu) because their damage is more bursty or their pattern more supporty.

ChuChuMuthaDucka12 votes

But honestly, I'm sick of the attitude that every champ has to have a specific gimmick that's all their own. I like variety, but Riot takes it too far. Sure, maybe Vel would never see pro play I his old state. I couldn't care less, because I'm not a pro player. The vast majority of players never will be either, and they don't need to worry so much if one champ is the best fit to a situation. Just let them play champs because they like the champ. No BS necessary.

ModAcademy Kayn12 votes

So, what you're saying is, Velkoz should fade in mediocrity because "The community aren't pros". The idea behind the change is that people who love Velkoz, get to play Velkoz in Ranked without feeling like you're picking someone weaker, just because you like them more than the stronger pick.

Every champ should be strong in their own specialty, to leave one weaker because other champs do his thing better is not a healthy design.

It Hertz When IP12 votes

He was a fun pick that was completely balanced. Balance > Flashy.

ModAcademy Kayn7 votes

He still is balanced, and still is a fun pick. He doesn't have any more flash than he already had before, so I don't know what that is about.

Elikain6 votes

The thing is, If champions aren't distinctive between themselves, the one usually getting picked up in games is the one who has better stats. Riot didn't make this change because they wanted pros to showcase their work in LCS, they made it for us, so that every champion has a special thing they do and that no champion feels like a better or a lesser version of another champion. They can't eliminate variable champion stats all together but they can give them something they can uniquely do in a team that is worth picking them over someone else, who has higher stats.

It shouldn't be just about who has the most damage. Not to mention that tanks are still a problem and instead of gutting them (and having them feel like totally lame champions because all you ever do is noodle-fight at top and then toss CC at the enemy team - that's all you do), Riot gave some mages ways to deal with tanks + revised the AP items to give all mages an optional path line, outside of raw AP.

The whole point of the Mage Update was to make mages feel like they're worth playing and because they're fragile, they get unique things they can do and some real threatening damage that isn't to scoff at, no matter who you pick.

Since the community is having some Zed issues at the moment, i would definitely like to see an Assassin Update at the end of the year, because Zed literally and figuratively overshadows every other assassin.

DarkRitual7 votes

Zed and Lucian are top tier and insanely high pick/ban%, let's slowly nerf them to only being 40% pick/ban. A mage is able to waveclear AND harass? FETCH ME MY NERF-CANON!

Like the old warding system. Now that ward capacity scales only with level, the team that falls behind stays behind.

And yet with 10 games representing the last 18 days of your ranked play, you didn't buy a single pink ward.

He's been played in Pro-play for a very long time, so I don't know what you're talking about.

Other thing, his old kit is like Taric's old kit. It's not a maze to navigate, it's a brick wall you either have to brut strength through it or not approach. Other than his Taunt, his kit had very little interaction or outplay for his opponents.

I agree with the general sentiment, myself.

General. There have been great changes, but a lot are bad because they just wanted to change something. Quality changes over quantity of changes is what I would like to see.

JedenVojak2 votes

As far as I'm concerned, Riot already started down that dark road when they decided to start reworking champions.

They hit the point of no return with the removal of the League.

I disagree with the first point, some champions need reworks to keep up in the changing game. And that's fine, if done well.

But I do agree with the removal of the League. I mean come on.

JedenVojak2 votes

In theory, if the champion reworks were just to make outdated unplayable champions able to function within the game space where newer more mechanically intensive champions live while preserving their overall playstyle and asthetic, that would be fine.

However reworks are not used that way by Riot: rather they are used to surgically (well if you were performing the surgery with an chainsaw) remove all fun from champions and lock them into one role/lane where they can never leave. Where's my jungle Soraka? My hybrid-melee-carry Poppy? Solo lane Morde??

ModAcademy Kayn8 votes

Innovation is fine, as long as it's not unhealthy (I'm looking at you Tank Ekko). Poppy isn't forced anywhere, she can Top, Jungle or Support due to her new abilities.

Soraka Jungle was a side casualty of her rework, and it wasn't a widespread thing at all. Riot can't care about all these, lets admit it, troll builds (Not saying they don't work, but they're rare as fuck to actually see played), because they're something you do for lol's. To have to factor in something really insignificant to a rework, causes new problems with the main problem they're trying to fix.

Morde was a horrible call though, but the rework did in the end solve what was frustrating about Morde. He's been given plenty of buffs after his (Horrible rework) and let Malicious Metal tell ya that Solo Lane Morde is still a thing.

There is only fun to play, or not fun to play: unhealthy does not exist.

Poppy isn't forced anywhere, she can Top, Jungle or Support due to her new abilities.

So you're saying that it is both common and successful for people to build full AP on Poppy and have it work? AD crit poppy? DPS poppy?

Poppy was a hybrid melee carry, now she is a peel tank. Those are completely different things.

The Soraka rework was designed to completely remove her ability to lane - that is by design a not-fun rework.

Morde was a horrible call though, but the rework did in the end solve what was frustrating about Morde. He's been given plenty of buffs after his (Horrible rework) and let Malicious Metal tell ya that Solo Lane Morde is still a thing.

He may be still a thing in the sense that it is technically possible to play him in a solo lane and not completely fail, but he's not fun anymore, at least he wasn't when I was still playing the game. His shields drain too quickly, his shields are too small, he's too slow, and his effective threat range is far too constrained as the majority of his damage has been tied to hitting 3 times in succession with a melee attack - on an immobile melee champion with no CC.

He is no longer fun to play. Seeing a pattern yet?

ModAcademy Kayn7 votes

This is where you are wrong wrong wrong. Old Poppy was unhealthy because she could ignore an entire team to kill your carry. Yorick is unhealthy because he makes being a melee more miserable than it is. Urgot is unhealthy because he only needs to land his E so he can spam Q till you die, or he dies.

Are these champs fun? Yes, to the person playing them, but they often feel unfair and unfun to play against, hence being Unhealthy.

You tell me that you could play Old Poppy Ap, As and crit and that's true. What you fail to remember is that Poppy original design has always been a Tank, but her busted ratios have always, and her busted Ult, made people stack full damage because it worked. It worked, but it was unhealthy as F**k, and unfun to play agaisnt at all.

Like said, Solo lane Soraka, just like solo lane Janna a long time ago, wasn't a widespread thing, and if it was, it was because it had an unhealthy aspect to it. Soraka will be a support, up and first most. Why take away power from her main role, to buff a less common choice role?

For Morde, I can't speak a lot about, but what i read about from Malicious Metal, a highly dedicated Morde main, he has found high success with Morde regardless of being in a solo.

Elikain4 votes

I can't say i agree with the removal of League part. This imaginary construct that Riot made when the game was young held it back in terms of giving champions proper introductions and comprehensive lore.

You wouldn't have Shurima, Mount Targon, Freljord lore nor would know anything about these places, outside of knowing they exist on a map of Runeterra. Ultimately, the thing that completely broke it is because Summoners existed - a champion could have had their own personality and convictions for joining League but Summoners were the ones controlling them, meaning that who and what they are did not matter at all because they were all treated as weapons.

#Personally, i'm excited for Icathia/Void lore.

Pÿrö1 votes

You know, you're right. I didn't think of it that way, I was looking at it too oldschool as far as lore.

Elikain3 votes

If you read Aurelion Sol's lore, he breathtakingly describes what the Void incursion into HIS reality was:

I turn my attention toward the source of the breach, nestled in the basin of the once-verdant valley, now strangled with creeping, purple miasma. I sense the Voidborn perversions of life tunneling through reality’s firmament, sending tides of unseen energy coursing through the aether. They shred the veil that separates nothingness and form with their unwelcome passage...

...A pulsing sickness lingers in the air. From the epicenter of the corruption, I feel a will… hungry and indomitable, and far from the typical mindlessness I’m accustomed to from these Voidborn aberrations. The pulsating wound on reality yawns and buckles, distorting and warping all it touches. Whatever exists on the other side is laughing.

...This anomalous fissure in the universe entrances me. This is not the first of its kind I’ve had to deal with, but this one feels different, and I can’t help but admire the marvelously terrifying manipulation of the barriers between realms. Few beings could fathom its complexities, let alone possess the sheer magnitude of power needed to rend the fabric of existence. In my heart, I know a wound so exquisite could never be orchestrated by scuttling creatures. No. There must be more behind this intrusion. I shudder at the thought of what kind of entity is capable of inducing such a volatile rift.

...I enjoy what I do next, partly because they’ll remember it, partly because it feels good to let a little of the old power loose, but mostly because I wish to remind whatever intelligence that controls this Void incursion that nobody laughs at me in my plane of existence. ...

I was simply on the verge of pure, literary orgasmic bliss when i read this. If this small part was so good, imagine what the actualy lore and Voidborn would have.

Not to mention Vel'Koz. I cannot help but to imagine Vel'Koz could have been behind the incursion as he is the only Voidborn we have in League that isn't as simple minded to devour everything in his path. There is method to his disintegration and that is to learn everything there is to know about this reality.

It Hertz When IP3 votes

Except that isn't true at all. Summoners only controlled them on the Rift, everywhere else (and most of the champions did NOT hang around the League halls 24/7) they did their own thing. Riot could EASILY have continued the League Lore; it was never about reaching a creativity dead end, it was the fact that the new writer team wanted to do their own thing and couldn't be bothered to familiarize themselves with what was already in place.

ModAcademy Kayn3 votes

Hardly. The League acted as a melting pot for all the champs to be around, but it limited what they could create because it had to be constrained enough to be in the League. Why would a incarnation of Death bother to take part of the League when they don't care who dies? Why would Tahm join the League?

This isn't a case of Laziness, but think about it from the idea of starting a DnD campaign. You want your players to be unique, different, awesome characters, but if you force them all to be say, police, for the sake of plot, you limit the creativeness of the players. A reason why players are together should be normal, easy to swallow, and hardly disrupting to the players characters.

They all met in a bar, or you're part of a Guild, or you were all imprisoned, are fine ways to start an adventure because its vague enough to work into a backstory without having to fit the backstory around it. You were arrested because your character is a Rogue and got caught stealing, and he met a wizard who was caught drunk in a bar fighting.

If you force a backstory to be around the idea "They have to have a reason for joining the League" than you have to make them allied to a cause, they have to be sentient enough to agree, or they have to be captured and restrained, making the grand idea of their power belittle in comparison. A mixing pot is good, but not if you have to sacrifice the feeling of a character to allow them to join in with the story.
