Its a reset ppl, everyone is going down. Challengers cannot even get placed above plat 1. Not worth crying about, any elo you deserve...you'll get as the season goes along.

The issue people are having is any loss right now is -74 MMR to your last season rank. So to stay at your S5 level you need 10 wins. Where as last season going 5/5 would net you same MMR. I say -74 because I sampled 10 players end of Nov MMR add the 1200/2. Then factor in there loss rate 74 MMR and I was always +/- 20 MMR of where they were put S6.
What's the MMR swing per placement game?
If it's around 20-30, then it is extremely hard to rank up while being relatively easy to go down (lose 8 games, drop from plat to silver after reset). If it's more like 50-60, then that'll explain gigantic swings and small drops.
My only issue with going down almost a full tier even if you win most of your placements is being forced to still play against players around the tier you were in before. For S5 I was brought down to Gold 1 although in order to enter Plat 5 I had to play against Plat 3~1s. It was like this for S4 where I had to go from G5 to P5 playing against plats. Sure, I gained a ton of LP while losing very little, but it is still annoying.
