Normal Play =//= Pro Play

So originally I was going to post something like this as a comment to another thread, but I figure it's more an issue in and of itself, so here we are. (TL;DR: Pro and normal balancing being the same is bad, and should be changed)

Getting straight to the point, the fact that Riot refuses to balance pro play separately from normal play just annoys me. This has caused issues for the normal league players for years, and honestly I think it's long overdue that this is addressed. It's my opinion that pro play should receive its own balancing much like ARAM to promote the health of the game, and here's why.

So, let's go over the only reasons I could come up with as to why the balance is the same between both normal and pro play. I'll then provide what I feel counters these reasons, and edit in any other good reasons anyone can come up with:

  1. Keeping pro play "authentic"/keeping the "Experience" of pro and normal the same to satisfy those heavily invested in pro play. ( not really sure how to word this one, but I think the quote "Keeping balance the same so players feel like they're playing the same game as the pros" sums it up)
  2. Different balance makes it so pros can't properly practice for events.
  3. It would be too taxing on the balance team to basically create potentially two different metas and maintain them
  4. Due to the Pro balance being pro only, there wouldn't be a "pbe" type way to test these changes before getting them into an event.

Again, if someone comments another good reason, I'll post it up for now this is litterally all I could think of, and trust me I really tried. Regardless, now that I've stated all the reasoning I could see for keeping the same balance, let me provide some counter reasoning:

  1. An idea like this makes no sense because it implies Pro players and Normal players are playing the same game in the first place. A game of two full coordinated teams filled with the best of the best is not and never will be anything like normal league, hence why champions who are monsters in pro games don't do anything in normals and vice versa.
  2. I think that most of the changes being made to pro play balance would most likely be simple nerfs to champions who needed them, and the reasoning for these nerfs would COME from pro play itself. It wouldn't be huge changes that shift the entire game, just checks to keep monster pro picks and strats in check.
  3. For one, simple changes probably wouldn't create an entire new ecosystem to maintain if that's how they went about it, and for two the balance team clearly isn't stressed for balance decisions. A lot of the time things they change really just don't seem to have any rhyme or reason.
  4. Again, simple yet hard-hitting changes wouldn't cause a super broken game state to occur, meaning there wouldn't be too much need for a pbe type testing phase. After all, that would imply OUR pbe has a use like that anyway : ^)

All in all, I think a lot of players will agree that pro balancing and normal balancing being the same is nothing but trouble for normal league players. Pro and normal league are NOT the same and should NOT be treated like they are. The game would only improve for both parties. Normal players wouldn't have to worry about the ENTIRE meta shifting because a bunch of pros found a new strat to abuse, and the pro play would most likely require new strategies and ideas since Riot wouldn't have to worry as much when it came to nerfing op things in pro play.
