@Meddler, Potential Shen -W- Tweak which Could Help Him a Lot

WARNING, A LOT OF TEXT. HOWEVER, DO NOT FEEL DISCOURAGED FROM READING. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY FEEDBACK.

Riot Meddler recently announced possible reductions to Shen's Ultimate cooldown. Many people disagreed and said that that is not what he needs. I for one, think that it is a very good idea, and a step in the correct direction in terms of helping Shen in the current meta.

I know that Riot often handles champion buffs gradually; they look into one change and see how it affects the champion, and then adds further changes based on the success of that change. However, I do not believe this to be enough to put Shen in a good spot. I've thought of a few changes that would help Shen in the top lane meta, and I believe one to be the simplest and most effective, and addresses many of the reasons that he is not very strong. This change will occur with his W - Feint, which is one of the most lack-luster shields in the game.

~~ Current W - Feint: COST: 50 ENERGY ||| COOLDOWN: 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 / 5 ACTIVE: Shen gains a shield that absorbs a certain amount of damage. The shield dissipates after 3 seconds if not already destroyed. SHIELD: 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 60% AP) While the shield persists, Shen's basic attacks reduce the cooldown of Ki Strike by an additional 1 second (2 seconds total). ~~

So here, Shen's current W offers a shield that consumes 1/4 of his resources at all levels, and has a fairly long cooldown early. The shield is also fairly small, unless you run a butt-load of AP runes on your active page (which is not efficient for shen, because while his damage is derived from magic damage, his AP ratios are too small to invest AP into, except for ulti; Instead, you should run Magic Pen if going for early damage). Not only is the shield small, but the shield's utility that helps the CD on his Passive suggests that you should have the shield up for a long time, while auto-attacking, so that you can get your passive up sooner.

~~ Now, let us look at some of the reasons that Shen is not strong ATM.

  1. Toplane Teleport Meta (Meddler already announced a reduction to Shen's Ulti cooldown, so that's great!)

  2. No MR per level. This is a huge problem, as it limits Shen's strength against a magic damage comp. Not only does it contributes to the damage done to Shen by the AP Carry, but also helps those that build BOtRK melt through Shen like butter due to BOtRK's passive magic %health damage. This helps other tanks, such as Gnar, Shyvanna, Volibear, and WW shred through Shen.

  3. Also, unlike most top laners, Shen only brings ONE considerable aspect of himself (taunt) to a teamfight. Others, such as Maokai, Shyvanna, and Jarvan bring a lot more peel (in peoples' like Mao case) or a lot more damage (Jarvan and Shyvana).

~~ New W - Feint: COST:50 ENERGY ||| CHANGED COOLDOWN: 7/6.5/6/5.5/5 NEW PASSIVE: Every Auto Attack steals 5% of his target's MR (stacks up to 5 times). This bonus MR lasts for 3 seconds, +.4 per stack. CHANGED ACTIVE: Shen gains a shield that absorbs a certain amount of damage. The shield dissipates after 3 seconds if not already destroyed. Shen also gains 5% of his Armor as Attack Speed. If the shield is destroyed by incoming damage, Shen keeps the attack speed for 3 more seconds (DOES NOT STACK). SHIELD: 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 60% AP) CHANGED While the Attack Speed Buff persists, Shen's basic attacks reduce the cooldown of Ki Strike by an additional 1 second (2 seconds total). ~~ ALTERNATIVE TO PROPOSED PASSIVE: Instead of stealing MR through auto-attacking, I feel like stealing MR from all nearby champions through an Aura - that increases in potency the longer you are in combat - would give him more teamfight pressure, however, I feel like that would easily be very strong and prove difficult to balance. ~~

In the proposed W, Shen's strengths - Constantly Auto-Attacking in a duel and absorbing damage - are brought out. The new W still encourages Shen to build tanky so that the player can get a noticeable attack speed buff. Not only that, but the new passive helps to allow Shen to deal with magic damage without giving him MR per Level. Also, many have pointed out that Shen has hideous energy costs. The new Attack speed passive will now help Shen in terms of energy cost by helping him get Ki Strike up faster. Not only will it help him with energy, but having more Ki Strikes will encourage Shen players to build more tank without feeling like they are sacrificing their ability to deal considerable damage.

Please if you have any comments or suggestions about this, please comment below. Any comments regarding the balancing of ratios on the new -W- are strongly appreciated.

MR per lvl and an Ulti CD, and he's good. Riot make it happen. If that really breaks the game somehow, get rid of Zed's MR per lvl as they are both melee ninja brothers.. Or was Mr per level the "Forbidden Art" that Zed unlocked in that box.

I really think that just MR per level isn't gonna be good enough, because giving him just that stat won't help his teamfight presence. The abillity to allow your team to deal more damage by stealing the enemies MR will really help and give Shen a purpose when his taunt isn't available. But I definitely agree with you in terms of the ult, due to the teleport meta.

He is incredibly tanky in a fight with his built in sustain and shield (not to mention damage reduction with his taunt). I honestly don't like that he has to build more mr than a normal fighter/tank. His Q is very strong in terms of what it does for your team (free lifesteal), so I think MR steal for Shen would be overkill, whereas MR/lvl will just give him more effective health against AP Mages as they are ever so much more prevalent in the top lane nowadays. I think all melee champs should get MR/level just to normalize things. And then they can nerf champions who become op due to that (looking at you Maokai and Kassadin).

As an aside, I don't know how healthy Kassadin is right now so maybe give him MR per level and just keep him as is, and he will probably become a tier 3 AD Bruiser who can stick on you forever. item 3042 item 3078 item 3110? Anyone?

I do not believe that the MR steal on basic attacks would be too bad. However, 5% per stack may be too much, allowing Shen to destroy the enemy front line just by decreasing resistances. I would like it to be flat MR, but that would be really strong against AP carries without much MR to begin with. I mainly believe this passive to be a good idea because if you build tank on shen, youll be dealing far more magic damage than physical through use of your passive, but with a lot of people building things like Banshee's, Shen's overall damage output is very minimal.

That is pretty cool, though that is a TON of scaling in one ability. item 3091 anybody?

Oh, and to correct part of your post, item 3153 only does physical damage.

A good idea would be to increase base amount of shield and remove all scalings on it, what do you think?

Honestly, the fact the shield gives a buff means you're punished for taking the damage. On Janna's spell, that's fine, since it's very big and being able to stop her huge damage boost is part of the counterplay. It also gives your squishy ad assassin or marksman more incentive to not get hit, since they lose damage if they lose the shield. On a tank like Shen, this is basically punishing you for doing your job - it directly conflicts with a taunt in general.

Also, a "feint" is a dodge using deception - absolutely a ninja-like thing. It is definitely NOT just absorbing hits. If there's anything in-game it should be copying, it's Jax's dodge - perhaps a 2 second dodge that keeps the ki strike effect while it's on.

You're definitely correct. Now that I think of it, why would a "feint" be a damage-soaking shield
