Death of a Classic

Urgot's Rework is coming, and it's time someone said the thing that's on a lot of people's minds... "What on earth is Riot thinking." This 'rework' is not Urgot. It's not even a shadow of what Urgot is/was. It's cold-blooded murder of a classic champion, with an impostor instated in his place. This isn't a rework, it's a new champion under the guise of an old rework. I don't know who has a hate-on for Urgot at Riot, but if you're going to release a new champion, could you maybe not slaughter an old one in the process? Warwick's rework was actually a rework - his core concept and feel was kept, while his abilities were changed to fit the new direction League took since Warwick's creation. Whoever this Dreadnought is, is not Urgot. This is a top-lane bruiser, not a skittish, surprisingly survivable AD Caster. Even his passive isn't 'ranged' per-se, it's so close-range it might as well be melee. Where is his casting, why does he -want- things to be in his face now? Why does everyone need to slow themselves to a crawl to survive, thus getting them killed anyway because they can't run? I must say this is the most disappointing 'rework' since Soraka.

inb4 "Mad cause urgot wahwah." inb4 "cry more" inb4 "Your opinion is different than mine and therefore you are stupid" inb4 flamewar.

summoner 14 TL;DR Urgot's rework isn't a rework; it's cold-blooded murder. summoner 14

you knew this was coming for years

I knew a rework was coming, not an outright butchering of his concept as a champion.

looks the same to me. spider legs. and old soggy body patched with hoses and green goo. homing rockets. forcing enemies to trade places with you. corrosive charge aoe. damage reduction. fear. suppression. it's all there

now you can dash and instant kill with your R which means it actually has a purpose.

There's no casting, there's no "homing rockets" - that's his auto-attack. There's a melee-range bruiser. The only thing he's got left is a vaguely similar look. His ultimate was extremely good before... If you knew how to use it. Unfortunately, the vocal people were the ones complaining that it was useless because they were using it wrong. Urgot has always required good positioning and vision - something League players nowadays don't rely on like they used to.

his old R's displacement is his dash. his new R is his old R combined with his old Q. his old E is the same minus the armor reduction + a slow. his W is the same minus the slowing attack and then on top of the shield he gets a faster attack speed buff which is better than a movement speed dubuff since he already has a movement speed debuff on two of his other abilities. the only thing he's really losing is his black cleaver-esque basic attacks and such.

you'll see when he's released that he's basically the same champion only now he's got some cool animations.

I can see his abilities just fine in the preview, and I see that he is nothing like what he was. One of us is not formulating their thoughts properly. He should have been retired and whatever the hell this is should've been a new Champion, not the slaughter of an old one.

what a round about way to try and insult someone by calling them stupid...

i disagree with you. no need to insult me.

I was making the statement assuming -I- was not articulating properly, because I've done it in the past.

I was sad when they reworked Soraka, she was my main in season 2 when I first started playing. The new Soraka is not at all even close to how old Soraka was. The only thing even remotely similar is her ult which is still way different in its effectiveness, cooldowns, and base stats.

But it was necessary. Old fluffy haired old lady Soraka with the giant hooves was radically unbalanced, sometimes in her favor, sometimes not so much. Sometimes, you have to take a step back, look at your creation and go "wow what was I thinking this doesn't work with anything else I have here at all." Whether its a purple pillow in a red and white themed room, a character in a book, an oddly placed text bubble in a comic strip, or.... a character skill set in a video game.

Urgot is sadly no longer compatible with the direction League is going, and hasn't been for a very long time. He has the lowest pick rate in the entire game by a huge margin, and a rather low win rate to go with it. His kit, his VO, and his visuals are all extremely out of date. While it may be sad to see him being changed, it will be something that sits in line with how league is today.

Don't think of it as "murder" think of it as re-birth or reincarnation.

Except, he doesn't look or feel like Urgot anymore, in any way, shape, or form. Why not simply retire current Urgot, and make whatever this Dreadnought thing is an entirely new champion? That makes more sense than butchering his core concept. On the subject of Soraka, while it might have been necessary, I do not see her (at all) anywhere, anymore.

You must not look a lot of places then. I play against and with her regularly.

Urgots whole kit does not mesh with how league is today and sits more in line with Soraka giving allies mana and Ezreal healing his allies with his E. Frankly its a hot mess on the new rift. He doesn't have any kind of place. I have friends who love urgot and most of them have been excited for this rework because they haven't been able to rely on themselves to win a lane for the past two seasons.

Have we been able to make it work? Kind... of? It normally relies on us premaking with a jungler who will dedicate his time to spoon feeding our lane and me supporting them and even then Urgot doesn't make much of an impact in the teamfights area except occasionally managing to pull out a high priority target which a lot of other champions can do faster and more effectively and the normal damage you should expect from a carry. It doesn't have to do with his ratios, his kit is just not viable and needed a complete rehash which is what happened.

While I'll concede the point of Soraka, I did mean that -I- hadn't seen her since season 5. I understand Urgot takes a -team- to work with (Shocking that, a team game requiring a team, instead of 1 person being able to pull a win out of their backside) I do not understand changing nearly everything about a champion and pretending it's still the same one. Retiring Urgot and creating a new Champion is what should have happened, instead of butchering an old one.

I've been playing since 09' I love this rework, they took his half shitty playstyle of poking and bombarding you with locked on shots, to making him a shorter range juggernaut with locked on machine gun, with shotgun knees for when he's kiting and a execute that you can't escape

Feels alot better to play then an ult that puts you in the enemy team 9/10 times and a shield that scales badly, and only gives you a slow if it's up..

This is your opinion though.

EDIT: As for thematic, I still find him disgusting, not in the same way but he's a abombination, with mechanical parts, he still has the same feel to me.

I spent most of season 2, 3, and 4 maining Urgot. It is my opinion that this is not Urgot, this is Riot having an idea for a new Champion, but instead of making it a new champion, "reworking" an old one until he has none of the same play-style at all. You can have your opinion, and I'll have mine, and I will continue voicing my disappointment in Riot until they give Urgot an actual rework, instead of making him a completely different champion.

First of all "retiring" a champion is not a good idea there are groups of people who main the least unpopular champions and that wouldn't really be good for RIOT to simply just "retire" the champion they made reworks to actually make the champion viable in the game and as well as the lore of League. Also what they did with his visuals isn't that bad it gives him a more Zaun look because they made him from Noxus but he was taken to Zaun as a slave which means he couldn't be a undead robotic thing and he is still old urgot in terms of augments and lots legs. Off of the visuals and now the game play the skills aren't that different he still has corrosive charge a shield and a lock on mechanic (which can lock on with his corrosive charge like old urgot) and some engage/CC as well a ultimate that is so much better than his old one. Urgot can't be what is is before rework its not viable to play and is a difficult champion because of it making him a relatively useless that's why champions are reworked if they aren't good in visuals, game play, or both they rework them to make them a better character that you'd like to see in your game. And well here's the thing with Warwick's rework he was a modernized they took the werewolf and gave it a true twist of Zaun the reason why he didn't change that much was because they didn't need too they had a good idea for a character and expanded on the idea giving him viability and the visuals to look similar to the theme that Zaun has in its nation augmentation and fear not all champions have this luxury .

I need to facepalm. Using the bloody ground as the proverbial "palm" over how stupid this post is.

I dunno, I feel they take the very specific elements I want to stay and remove those more often than not.

I always wanted Urgot to turn into a more Debuffer support, get a Grievous wounds effect to go with his armor shred, dps debuff on-hit and slow. His previous kit allowed him to be a support with the right focus, this new one quite heavily removes most of the elements that allowed that sort of gameplay.

CreativeLunacy1 votes

And this new thing is a top-lane-relegated mess. There is nothing left of Old Urgot.

Syruponrofls1 votes

Its a known fact by now that when a re-work happens people will no longer consider the champion the same champion that it was pre-rework. He looks the same as he did before just better. He looks interesting now not just lock on and Q spam you out of lane.
