Do people prefer this over what League used to be ?

The insane damage you do at 15 minutes into the match, most damage champions only require 1 item to start popping off and deal insane damage.

Now i'm talking about the normal and lower ranks, riot only cares and builds the game around the E'sport scene while the actual majority of the games turn into fiestas.

I've played this game on-off since Season 1 and i've never had as little fun as now. The old nostalgia games where actual teamwork and thinking mattered are gone, when you got into champ select and people talked team comps and synergy. Now people rather go for high damage champions & play solo, build 1-2 items and start death matching and chasing each other for 20-30 minutes until 1 team wins. Its boring, and that's why more than half of the champion pool isn't played, because the only viable thing to do in this game unless you're high mmr or in the pro scene is to buy damage and play solo.

Just my thoughts.

i would love nothing more then to go back to season 1-2 as i hate the game as it is now.

and i dont think its the nostalgia talking because back then games lasted longer then 20-30 min( 40-60) some champ have power spikes at different times in the game. imo it feel that ballance of the game has been thrown off when the games are so short.

and losing teams used to be able mount comebacks/stall.

also objectives dident provide so much snowball(its so ridiculous now)

From what i've seen, season 1-2 wasn't very balanced either but hey idk I didn't play back then.

TheSingularity16 votes

No single season was balanced. They were balanced to different degrees and in different ways.

Personally i pref the longer ttk and ttd of seasons 3 4 5. As well as the broader range of viable champs

LTK KoRo1 votes

im pretty sure that ttk was pretty fast in season 3, DFG still existed back then?

If yes then season 3 had shorter ttk than current.

Auz the Ripper1 votes

Deathfire grasp had a cool down of 120 seconds, could only be used on AP champions, and generally it gave a similar time to kill as most champions have now.

LTK KoRo1 votes

Not really, i mean, the part about CD is true but otherwise a lot of mages back in season 3 were busted with DFG.

I recall killing someone with old Swain DFG+e+q. I was killed multiple times by Ahri DFG+e+q. DFG was the shit basically

Cats Are Food1 votes

They weren't overly balanced, but the champion pool was enough that you could ban the couple of broken champs - and then just ban what countered your team. There were only a couple of out-of-the-gate bans.

That said, MANY of the champions still played today were "late game" champions. If you didn't end it early, you were in trouble. Now most of them are considered worthless for a reason.

Those that aren't worthless have been tweaked via numbers and items to pop off early in the game, and you are in trouble way sooner.

And playing a game for 40-60 minutes was a good thing....why? If you have an inter or a troll who intentionally drags the game on that long, it is HELL. 20-30 minute games tops is wonderful in comparison, win or lose. If anything, I wish the items were less expensive (here's looking at you BF Sword).

I am iron rank and I only started playing a month ago, but I have had a couple 40+ minute games and they were games where I was usually feeding my ass off and didn't have a completed item until 20 minutes in. If I am doing that badly, I'd prefer the game to just be over by 20 minutes pls & ty.

LightIsMyPath7 votes

No offence but games in iron aren't indicative. I've been multiple seasons placed in bronze (that now is iron) and I saw why games there are so long: People do everything but hit the damn nexus. I've seen people winning fights and recalling (????), taking baron and going to farm the jungle instead of pushing for the enemy base, ADCs suiciding trying to hit the backline (so even if you miracoulosly win the fight you can't take much cause the person doing the most damage to the turrets is dead) ecc.. Games there are longer because players refuse to end, not because the game is balanced to be long

Bronze? That happens all they way up to diamond where your jungler just won't leave jungle even when the enemy team is aced and you have baron.

Nevrankroaton2 votes

Ah yes, the jungler buying ward/oracle and buying G5 items, the support being an incredible whore, the trinity of ADC... Gosh do I MISS the INCREDIBLE F U N that was season 2.

Or let's not forget the fuckfest that was Season 1.

Oh gosh, release vayne, old TF, OLD GRAVES.

Humph was it PERFECT, so glad to have long games that was surely full of fun and strategy because they were long, not because it dragged for too long and nobody knew how the fuck to play back then.

I'd rather have my 45 minute games back over this "die once lose everything at 10 minutes" stuff we have now. I found them way more enjoyable, and less stressful, than what we have now.

Unfortunately a true answer to this is impossible due to so many people leaving and Riot refusing to give out any data whatsoever on who remains.

True that. Still, I watch at my friend list, and I know how things are going. This company deserves it, tbh.

League is no longer a strategy based game that requires coordination and careful planning. League is now a survival horror battle royale that is being taylored to appeal to the Fortinite generation. The release of Nexus Blitz, the constant damage buffs to everything and the fact that a team can surrender at 15 just shows you in what direction Riot wants to go and what seems to be flavorable in this day and age.

I just want to go back to seasons 2-4 when the game was actually good. Maybe even early season 5 before all that tank meta nonsense happened.

Stephenizgod4 votes

Tank Meta was one of the best metas after Season 4 where ADC's were walking Gods. The issue was off-tanks started to get too strong and Tanks started doing more and more damage when they tried to fix it.

Śhunpo1 votes

Yeah, it all seemed to happen once DFG got removed and Morello left. Funny that, the one guy on the balance team who seemed to never create a pure tank meta, and the moment he leaves what happens? A tank meta that goes on for almost 3 seasons. But yes, they made tanks deal too much damage and they gave champs like Jax too many HP+AD items to choose from since Riot wanted to go through with class updates (which all failed miserably).

I'd take pre-juggernaut season 5 personally.

It's not about what we want anymore. It's about what the Chinese want and they like the fast and furious playstyle

And before I get downvoted into oblivion I'm not agreeing with them. Just simply stating the fact of whats going on

MissMikasa10 votes

I don't. I prefer the seasons 4-6. Where teamwork and strategy were big parts of the game and matches didn't last less than 20 minutes.

Sigh.

RIP League and the good ole days.

The game was best in like season 3 or 4, there are clips of people being able to actually outplay someone... and I don't mean they one-shot the enemy first. People actually had to use their brain to play and not just press Q,W,E,R all at the same time and destroy someone. It was more... strategic?

Rαy8 votes

Absolutely loved this game from seasons 3-7 and completely despise it ever since season 8 turned League into this dumbed down oneshot fiesta.

Every game I play nowadays is either not satisfying or utterly frustrating.

I wish Riot would start to listen to us again instead of balancing around the Chinese playerbase, but I guess we do not matter anymore.

Season 5 and 6 were really the sweet spot for me. The reworks were great, the items where (somewhat) where they needed to be, and most importantly I can actually gauge what’s happening in a teamfight as it happens.

Nowadays if I hear that Ludens “POP” all I know is I have 0.3s to react or the last remaining health I have is gone or Urgot just executes me from a screen away. Akali literally breaks preseason 6 rules bescause she is the only champion that can’t be targeted under her shroud. Irelia is plain busted looking at worlds this year and worst of all the death recap can’t even justify what happened to me because the math never adds up.

E: When I say PS6 I mean the separation of True Stealth and Sight where pinks were changed to control wards.

Stracony6 votes

You know you are right, league has always had team issues, like trolling and w/e. But back in the day it actually felt like other players on your team are actually trying to win the game.

Now... it feels like a game between 2 good players who each have 4 children and the one that prevents their children from walking onto the busy street wins.

Stephenizgod5 votes

Man I miss the old League... games were long enough that Teamplay and Strategy was the win-con, but not so long that it was just a 5v5 6 item clash in mid lane. People hate on Tank meta but that was one of the most balanced metas for teamwork and map control because teamfights weren't over in 1/20th of a second so you needed to fight over objectives to not fall behind. Although it could just be that Tank Meta came in after a much deserved buff to tanks and nerf to ADC's who were completely unstoppable (assassins were garbage and continued to be garbage through Tank meta except for those who could build tank... which eventually led to the death of Tank meta).

I see people all the time "hurr durr I have so many 40 minutes games you all dumb" yea i have a lot of games that go longer than 30 minutes, but the game is over at 10 minutes... the remaining time is the winning team ending the game. When I say I want 45 minute games, I want the game to be decided at 35-40 minutes and then the remaining 5-10 minutes is the game closing out, like how it used to be.

This was the best for both teams! It was less frustrating to lose because it wasn't dragged out over 30+ minutes with the score 54-12 and more satisfying to win because you had to constantly outplay and out-maneuver.

But it makes sense that Riot is making the game the way it is right now. Their largest playerbase is now in China, they are losing the rest of their playerbase and have been for awhile, so they are catering the game to them right now. The Chinese want their games to be shorter due to them not having personal computers and they play in internet cafe's and such where they have to pay for a certain amount of time. Shorter games = more games.

Games die, it happens. I really think Riot chose the wrong player-base to balance towards. Its not that I don't care about the Chinese playerbase and I think its fair to want to make the game more accessible for them, but it has gone too far and I think there won't be any chance at recovering at this point.

In conclusion, as board population is roughly 200 maximum. No matter what we said here, it won't reach outside of the wall even if we have lots of wanting the old league back. Because unfortunately most of the casual player won't even give a damn to the current game issue, they just want the game to be as fast as some crappy mobile MOBA game.

I was at full health against a Zed a few days ago and was astounded when he took me out with a full combo rotation in one sitting once he got Duskblade. So, no--I don't prefer this game how it is now. I felt that tank meta was the healthiest the game ever was. To add to that though, I would say that a meta where tanks are RELEVANT is more important than any 'meta role' season.

It isn't nostalgia at all.

Game went from strategy to flashy.

There is absolutely no way anyone can deny that.

And most people want strategy, or a mix, not flashy one-shot fiesta.

I don't know shit. That being said, I think that the NA veteran players wish the game played how it used to be. I doubt the newer players give a fuck - they don't know what they missed. I'm guessing, could be wrong, that the korean/chinese players favor the more fast paced route of league. Even if NA misses the old shit, we're way outnumbered by the total playerbase.

Now i'm talking about the normal and lower ranks, riot only cares and builds the game around the E'sport scene while the actual majority of the games turn into fiestas.

When are people going to stop saying this.

No, Riot does not "only care about the esports scene" and it's been proven time and again by their balance decisions:

  • Riot balances predominantly around ranks that are nowhere near pro-level (High plat/low diamond)
  • Riot frequently has patches that hit champs only good in solo/low queue (Bye Yorick)
  • RIot will occasionally do a pro-centric patch. Usually around worlds.
  • Balance has always favored lower-tier players more than higher tier players.
  • Balance decisions are often about placebo buffs/nerfs more than things that have lasting impact in pro/high tier games.

People don't want to swallow the pill but Riot balances around casual play. Perhaps way more than they actually should. As a lasting reminder: Everything currently happening with the game could be traced back to Dunkey's "I'm quitting League" video in which all the things people say they missed (long games, extremely low damage, games only decided by late game teamfights and nothing else) were hardcore complaints back in the day.

If Riot actually balanced around pros to the degree boards says they do, we'd see a LOT more interesting pro games than the handicapped balancing we have today.

Even if the things Dunkey said were true at the time, i dont see how shifting the game to complete opposite extreme is a good alternative. Surely there is some middle ground that Riot is evidently too incompetent to achieve.

One of Dunkey's main points was lack of skill expression which has all but gone down the gutter with the current state of the game and its oppressive damage. You used to have to have to think semi strategically to get kills, poke people down a bit, do an outplay, SOMETHING. Now you hit level 3, mash your keys + ignite and have lethal damage on 100% hp targets. Where is the skill in that? There is none.

The game was a lot of fun in the early days, but it's not necessarily because it was balanced - it was just broken in ways that felt fairer and less punishing to play. Early seasons had some insane damage. But it was mostly on scalings. There were however also some insanely broken items. Most people forget that Season 1 was dominated by mages, because something called Zhonya's Ring existed in the game - it was literally item 3089 item 3157 in one item, for the cost of one item. What didn't exist as much in the early seasons were the depth of champion selections, strategies, and knowledge that exist today, the amount of front-loaded physical damage item 3078 item 3095 item 3147 represent, the damage/mobility creep represented by the past several seasons' worth of reworks, and the war on mana.

For me, even with the balance issues that existed, early seasons felt better because:

  • the old rune system gave a lot more flexibility on builds and stats than Runes Reforged
  • mana-based champions weren't constantly forced to recall because of forced mana shortages
  • when you got one-shotted it was usually by a spell or ability that you knew you shouldn't be getting hit by - instead of two or three near-instant autoattacks and/or spammable physical abilities

Others' experience may vary.

I think that it's entirely possible that "Runes Reforged" should actually just become Masteries Reforged - and possibly see certain nerfs to reduce keystones to the level of old masteries - and that the old runes and stat bonuses should come back but be free. I think the new system has produced some new and cool iconic abilities - Klepto, Grasp, Augment are the kinds of things I think are not fundamentally broken and deserve to stay - but the ability to customize your early free ~1000 gold worth of stats so precisely was more empowering.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

I do not share your opinion. There were so much more point and click spells and stats-checkers champions back then.

I appreciate their willingness to change their game. they are a moba in 2019, the genre is out of vogue In the US. As a game you gota be like a shark, you either keep moving or a sink and die. You're absolutely entitled to think that a previous iteration of the game was better, but the fact is, no iteration was perfect. No game is perfect. In my head 2005's King Kong was a photorealistic master piece, I watched it a few days ago and lets just say the CGI didnt exactly match my memory. Honestly, Im happy the game is still afloat, considering most games are put down or labeled "dead" in months or even weeks these days... It's a wonder as many people play the game and interact with the property as they do. Its 10 years old people!! League will never be what it "used to be," and it wont be the same as it was a few days ago, league is gonna continue to change or die trying. If you liked season 1-2 be glad you experienced what few here got to see - something innocent, if season 3-4 was your shit you have a lot of good memories, everyone has their heyday, some might even be in theirs right now. You'll never be satisfied trying to get what you once had, and there's also nothing wrong with something being put to an end. Its part of the problem with the endless remakes and sequels these days, we don't know how to let stuff go. If league isn't your game anymore don't play it, trust me there are other games out there for you!
