Maybe riot should learn about making HUDS with Hi-Rez games [Smite]

FAPPERMAN··58 votes·6,185 views

While i see a ton of ppl saying the new HUD is terrible, there are others amking some good sugestions....

In my opinion an editable HUD would be the greatest thing ever....however riot said it would be too hard for a new player to read everything and learn how to edit the HUD

Well....i disagree strongly with this for 2 major reasons...

1 - new players USUALLY don't change the HUD and options of the game all of sudden. Most players first learn how to play and use everything on the game to THEN change this kind of thing

2 - IT IS NOT SO COMPLICATED TO UNDERSTAND (Even for new players) as shown in the video....it can be something pretty easy and simple.

I don't see why riot is not going for an edittable HUD

(Sorry if i misspelled some words.... i'm japanese, so english is not my main lenguage)

The ''new players are too dumb for this'' its so fricking patronizing.

Your players are not idiots. OK maybe some but those wont change the HUD.

Even new players will want to change the HUD. And moving squares of info isnt hard at all. This isnt rocket science. Its not calculating the trayectory of a telescope moving towards planet Pluto (yay for Pluto!).

Just add a ''Toogle Anchors'' option inside the menu. You click it, a grid appears that lets you reposition the hud and resize it. Also a big, fat, shiny button for stop the configuration.

It cant get any simpler.

Right?

"New players" are playing Heroes of the Storm instead of League because Heroes has an actual tutorial, no idiotic rune grind, no deluge of smurfs and no reports for intentional feeding to throw at a newbie with 5 games under his belt.

I mean, Heroes doesn't have a rune grind, but getting heroes is more of a grind than in League. It works out to about the same total play time per hero (on average; more at the low end, less at the high end) but it feels much worse because of the daily system. I'd say that League's system is better (minus runes) because playing past your daily doesn't feel like you're earning nothing.

You can try them out though

Not judging either game, just saying most places on the internet have started recommending HotS for newbies because League is "old and hard to get into". And they're right, the newbie experience in League is an unholy mess.

Simple concepts don't always have simple solutions.

Well designed they can. The new HUD was pretty badly designed and looked like a SC2 reject. In fact it was demostrated that it took into account basically no visual design theories or the like.

Nilok8 votes

That is what I was hoping for from the HUD update.

When they showed the ability to move around player icons in the tab menu, I hoped they would expand such usability to the rest of the HUD, but was sadly disappointed.

FAPPERMAN2 votes

i think that is what we all were expecting ;/

when they said "its to hard for newbies to learn how to edit the hud"

make a tutorial just like hi-rez

Plus the newbies can have a standard HUD, and then people who feel like can change it.

Cindikle3 votes

I'm still hoping the recent change was to allow this. Old HUD's code was maybe too outdated so they had to remake it.

Ace Access 1 votes

by making some stat displays smaller ?

Cindikle1 votes

Depends on what you need from it. You can also scale the UI up if you want. Although I don't know if you can separate what is scaled. =\

I've mostly gotten used to the new placement. And don't care either way. To me there's a lot of fluff and useless stuff I don't need.

  • I don't need the art.
  • I don't need to see my HP/MP bar, I watch my character for that. Just give me a button to show the numbers if I want it. Or place just the numbers somewhere to the side.
  • I don't need to see all of my items. I know what I've bought.
  • I don't need to see the face of my champion. My short term memory isn't trash. I remember champ select.
  • Stats can be separated along the bottom a little flatter and grouped better. Also bring back the green numbers. Smaller numbers I'm OK with, but I'm still used to the green numbers. When I build armor I know to find the green numbers to see where I stand. This is nothing new to games.

When I played WoW my UI was very minimalistic. I watched the world. Not the bars. Most of the time I knew the CD's or could see it go off from the side.

When Hi-Rez is held up as an example of how to do something right, I worry for the people who are doing something wrong.

Rito, don't do this to us. Don't let Hi-Rez, who cares only about money and not at all about players or its own games, get the better of you.

You're goddamned right.

UltraRammus2 votes

You're mistaken my friend, rito only cares about the money and branding, they made something like 642 million dollars in 1 year alone, then they force changes without polling it's customer base, they ignore PBE feedback, they just do whatever they please willy nilly. I knew when ghost crawler and friends infected rito, this would happen, now my hunch has been proven correctly. For the near future when I move on to the next fun game and they happen to hire ghostcrawler, I'm leaving immediately instead of waiting to see. This is now 2 games that he's sent the customer base running for other venues.

I for one, am glad I used AMEX to pay for my rp under the older style game, now that they've ruined the hud and jungle, I'm simply going to initiate a chargeback and move on to SMITE or something else fun like Titanfall

Vistha Kai1 votes

Well, nobody asks of Riot to follow Hi-Rez style of development, just the goddamn HUD which should be a personal thing. Instead of spewing bullshit about "LCS equality" and "technical difficulties", because we've been proved many times it's 100% lies.

Look: Change to Fiora's hair and Ironstylus response on Reddit the day before.

Riot stopped caring about players long time ago. Pricing changes, ignroing the feedback and LC$ prove that

I fully agree, the excuse is a lame one at that. If a new person can not figure out to go into settings and a "edit hud mode" then use the mouse to drag where they want the item then they should not even be playing video games. This whole "but but a new player might not know how , or would be hard to learn!" is holding back the game in what it could be. This new HUD update is just pushing players into using 3RD party HUD UI just because you plain out refuse to do what the VETS want to make the game even better for them. Really riot, its time to stop these lame excuses.Thresh

Jambulija2 votes

This will require a lot of time and debugging to be added, as some rioter said they have a lot of code debt in this game.

However, that doesn't mean that they shouldn't do it. And reworking something completely from scratch will help changes down the line. Most of the time they are just.... to the literally meaning of the word - **patching **things, in the end they end up with more duct-tape than pipeline.

So i say yes, start working on something this right away Rito.

And I don't know why but it seems like rioters don't try other games much.

NERDSMASHER50001 votes

yeah they should learn from a game where everything there except the POV is copypasted directly from league of legends

FAPPERMAN6 votes

they still have better HUD options....so, no point in your comment

Syvenon3 votes

I mean... all of the movement and a lot of spellcasting is different soo... Maybe complain about Heroes of the Storm?

Jambulija2 votes

So what?

Developers from DoTA found a way to improve on their game/mod by joining up with investors and making a fresh start with a game called "League of Legends". Which obviously did good.

And copying is a big part of a very important process for humans called Learning.

Yeah, you never played Smite huh?

NuSix31 votes

I do like that you can move the objects around, but smite is one ugly game. That and the game has been out of beta for 2 years now and they are doing full map resets, releasing characters than doing full reworks only months later... they are all over the place development wise.

Vistha Kai3 votes

Because Hi-Rez is a crappy developer, but at least they can make a HUD not suck ass.

I really don't think the new HUD is that bad. It just takes time to get used to it.

Vistha Kai1 votes

This argument begins to look like "just use CC" one.

I will do everything to either revert old HUD or make the new one look as closely to the old I can and I don't care about all your "get used to it" bullshit.

Reprom1 votes

No joke, Smites HUD it's a mess.

HighKingOfSkyrim1 votes

the reason why they dont want an editable hud is, because it would start a silly battle about who has the best hud, which should not be a skill that is required to preform better than others.

i think that is reasonable argument

Jambulija4 votes

All summoners will still have the opportunity to have the most optimal display set as a default in the game and chosen by the developers.

The Loveless1 votes

I know this isn't the story & art section, but summoners don't exist any more. We got deleted about a year ago, sorry to break the news to you.

It's like we're a bunch of unsent from final fantasy 10.

Rrett1 votes

nah dude, people will legitimately quit league for the Hud changing minigame.

Chessburger1 votes

I feel like they're playing with fire. I simply won't play the game anymore if there's no customization or option to revert to the old setup.

Budupops1 votes

because riot employees are highschool drop outs?(thats my theory)

Chessburger1 votes

Lol even that game has info spread out over all of the corners like a logical thinking person would have designed it. LoL now has it all jumbled up in one corner and useless.
