My friend quit (a rant about placements and toxic people)

Hello everyone,

so my RL buddy, who has started LoL like 3 months ago, made the "mistake" of going right into rankeds when he turned level 30. I personally wouldnt have done that, but he didnt ask for my oppinion (not that he has to). I have to say that my buddy, being complete new to League of legends, doesnt have the knowledge or skills to carry a game. His CS'ing is bad, he misses his skillshots, he doesnt dodge enemy skillshots, he has no clue about most champion abilities or what items to build. Learning these things just takes tons of time. It comes throu the years and needs patience.

Well, having an excellent ladder system, i didnt worry much about him doing rankeds. He will be placed in low Bronze and there he can get better and start climbing eventually. But he didnt even made it past his 4th or 5th placement. He quit! As you all know, the LoL community can be quite toxic. Even in normals people go complete ape shit when you do mistakes or play bad. It's even worse in ranked.

He then told me, that he was losing game after game, it wasnt a real issue, but it frustrated him a bit. I can only imagine how his teammates must have treated him, cause he performed quite poor in most games.

Then the other day, he surprised me with a small message throu the ingame client telling me he just isnt made for this game, he will uninstall it. I was surprised, didnt really comment it further and let him go.

I was curious to check what actually happend and watched his game. Him, being in his 4th placement match, going darius top, faced a gold Yasuo. The whole team was high silver low gold. He was the only unranked person and he got completely DESTROYED.

He lost the game 0/12/1 and his team must have unloaded all their rage at him in chat. And this rises the question, how Riot determinates who you fight in your placements. I feel really sorry for his team too, cause it made it completely impossible to win this match with him on their side. It isnt his fault tho, he is a noob and should have never been there. I am Gold 2 myself and i would really hate to have someome unskilled and in his placements in my team on a ranked.

So this poor matchmaking decission paired with LoL's toxic community drove him away. This probably happens quite often and will hopefully looked at one day by Riot.

Did anyone ever made similar experience?

  • Placements
  • high silver low gold...

Yea he was in his first placement matches. You see when trying to match you up with people of your skill level you must first be assessed. **This high silver - low gold game is usually the FIRST PLACEMENT match and this is an important one to place a bit higher. **

The team probably didn't know he was in placements. Ranked is a very stressful place, and everyone is trying to climb so when someone on their team wasn't up to par, they thought he was dragging them down. People get nasty when things don't seem fair, and it's that primal instinct within all of us.

I will not lie to you or your friend, People are mean on this game, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying it. There is a "Mute" button you can use at the first sight of toxicity. You can use it, it's a beautiful thing.

If your friend however, doesn't wish to come back. Tell him that I am deeply sorry he had to experience that, and that I hope he finds joy in other things to come.

Maybe Pokémon is his game now.

You would think by the second or third match of getting absolutely destroyed he would've figured that maybe just maybe it wasn't a good time for him to start ranked matches. Personally I understand that the community can be quite toxic, but I also feel bad for his teammates who got their games completely ruined.

The same thing happened to me (but I didnt quit).

I recently started playing this game when Illoai was released. I really only started playing this game a lot when the shen rework happened (so like 6-7 months ago). I did know a decent bit about item builds and things like that as I am usually good in knowledge but have bad mechanics. Anyway, I did my placements a few weeks after being lvl 30.

I got fucking destroyed.

Most games I tried using my main Lux but i couldnt do anything. I used op.gg and I saw that every game (That i checked) was silver-gold. I won like one game. It is also kinda shitty since I normally play in normals, I have a horrible w/r because I dont do much ranked (Outside of those 10 games and a few outside of it). The placement system is really shitty from my experience. Getting buttpounded by a buch of people that are much higher ranked than I am in my first games sucks.

Mute, report, and move on

Assholes don't care about PSAs, they will still justify their toxicity in their head.

In previous seasons, players doing their FIRST ranked placements were all assumed to have mid-silver MMR for the duration. After the 10 matches are over they're given their "real" MMR. I haven't seen an official reason why, but it's likely just a matter of allowing higher skilled players doing ranked for the first time not being immediately dropped down multiple tiers below their true MMR.

  • Ex: A plat-level player doing ranked for the first time will likely be gold after placements and makes climbing less frustrating than being placed in bronze.

  • Ex: A bronze-level player is often placed silver but gradually drops to a more accurate rank with more games they play if they do not improve. (This is based on my own experience with my first ranked season.)

There's probably also a level for some players who don't want to believe that they're bronze and seeing them getting matched vs silvers makes them feel better about themselves. Your friend doesn't seem like the kind of person who would care too much about this, so it was likely more frustrating than anything else to be matched vs players he knew were better than to just pretend you're fine like a lot of first timers in ranked do (I pretended it was fine when I started ranked last season after spending my first two seasons of LoL unranked. I got my ass handed to me a few times because I still didn't understand the game because I'd never been competitive before.)

I'm sorry about your friend.

It's much more common than you think. Riot's new player experience is lower than shitgarbage-tier and imo is one of the biggest things holding them back as a dev.

This is a HUGE issue. I played ranked last night with a Tristana who had only ever played bots. It was her first pvp game except ARAM, she had no keystone (in fact only 21 mastery points even used, and no runes.) This person was on my team in my promos to silver 2. She was almost 90 cs down at 13 minutes and to the naked eye very clearly appeared to be trolling. I investigated further on na.op.gg and sure enough, completely brand new to Summoners Rift pvp and shes placed in high silver low gold and cost us that match very quickly
