What do all (or most) of the most picked top laners (competitively) have in common?

Sustain.

Irelia? Sustain. Olaf? Sustain. Swain? Sustain. Maokai? Sustain. Vladimir? Sustain.

Riot, you can't expect to nerf sustain on almost everyone except a few and then expect that few to not be overpowered. Seriously, this really is the worst Season by far. And I've said that every Season since Season 3 (I thoroughly enjoyed S1 and S2).

Season 3 "there's no way it could get worse than this." Season 4 "there's no way it could get even worse." Season 5 "There's no way it could get even worse than that." Season 6 "Yeah, there's no way..."

Season 7 "...there's no way..." coming soon to a theater near you.

Karthus mains very much did not. S3 was when Zed (and other assassins) kicked a lot of mages more or less permanently out of mid-lane. Also, season 3 had a horrendous pre-season. League of item 3071 , league of item 3083 , league of item 3153. Due to the armor/MR changes, a lot of people playing tanky champions also freaked the F out and the community didn't know if purchasing armor was even worth anything. Ezreal proved it was pretty effective, because that's when Blue Build became a thing for him.

Season 3 is more of a good destination for nostalgia because nostalgia. That season had it's fair share of problems.

With how LoL's matured, I'd also generally say this season is one of the better ones (barring the whole fiasco around of solo queue). Fighters actually have a legitmate item path rather than being split between tank and marksman items, marksman don't build the exact same thing regardless of who you pick, mages do more tactically interesting things with their items rather than just OHKO things, and each year is generally met with either an expanded praportion of viable champions in competative play, or just the same praportion with more champions (giving more widely accepted options when tryhard mode is fully engaged). In S3, pro players didn't have a very large champion pool and the same teams kept dominating the scene, which often resulted in a pretty small pool of champions with top-tier apperances.
