Ohmwrecker

10/22 PBE Update: TFT Set 2, Preseason 2020 Testing & More!

According to a recent Surrender at 20 article, it says "This item has been underused and underpowered for a very long time. The tower disable effect is an interesting interaction that can exist in LoL, but it has been hard to balance in the item space because we would not be happy if we saw tower disable become a baseline on most team comps." I find that instead of removing the item because it is underused, it should be given a revamp, similar to champion reworks. Ohmwrecker has been an item since season 1. Unlike other items that have been removed since then, this item is named and dedicated to a specific player, by removing this item, it shows a lack of community-company interaction. Furthermore, Ohmwrecker has been here since the first season, but has only received 7 changes since its release, but 2 of them were only gold changes. Instead of removing it because of its popularity, it should be featured in other gamemodes, whether it be used as a model for an item in TFT, or a special item in a new gamemode, similar to the brutalizer used in nexus blitz. This item is unpopular because it is not well known, because of the meta. If it were an older meta such as tanks in season 4-6, this item would be much better and would allow tanks to have more opportunities. This item is extremely unique in comparison to other items in terms of its active ability. Other active abilities are similar to each other, such as Zhonya's and the cap in Twisted Treeline(RIP TT) or the hextech set. Riot is already heading in a creative direction with its new patches and champions, such as Neeko hiding as another champion or the Syla's ultimate. Ohmwrecker provides an opportunity that Riot is backing away from, the ability to tower dive is not limited to tanks. Although it may be built as a tank item, its unique passive from raptor cloak affects game play because it can change pathing. Ohmwrecker must also be a highly coordinated item, if it is used and others do not initiate, it will be truly useless. Raising awareness of Ohmwrecker will fix this, and will also get more people to use it. At its current state it is not strong enough to be considered broken, but rather than being underpowered, it is underused. If put on a jungler, a well organized team can dive with its jungler using Ohmwrecker. It creates initiations otherwise impossible, and is an interaction that Riot Games is not testing out enough. Please reconsider the removal of Ohmwrecker, and rather than trying to solve the problem of it being underused by it being underused, try to revamp it such as champion reworks.

Im very doubtful anyone who voted to keep ohmwrecker in the game is actively using it in their games.

This always happens, tbh.

Riot announces that something is getting removed (Ohmwrecker, Zz'Rot, even Twisted Treeline) and immediately a bunch of people rush to the Boards/Reddit/Twitter saying that they loved the content and that it shouldn't be removed. Even though 60-75%+ of those people have never touched said content.

I always run Zzrot though (if I play a tank).

I get what you're saying here, but there's no actual good reason this item needs to be removed.

"It's so niche almost nobody builds it!" - then having it shouldn't be a balance problem.

"It's been here since season 1 and barely has been changed!" - just like twisted treeline and dominion, and yet riot deems that as a major reason to remove it. Just like TT and Dominion. Notice a pattern yet?

"It clutters up the item shop!" - there's only a couple items that build into more popular things that make up Ohmwrecker, so, not including direct searches for it, we are talking about a MAXIMUM potential of only two "unnecessary" appearances of said item per game, and considering one of those components builds into another item that is rarely built, that is highly unlikely.

"It's not meta, and none of the pros are using it- why keep it?" - i think we're getting warmer, here, but it still doesn't give a good reason to remove it.

"Reworking it is too difficult, as it could be gamebreaking if it actually became good anyway." - Bingo! Riot doesn't feel like attempting a rework, because they know just how bad they are at those, and it could very easily become a BoC issue all over again. PBE is not a good grounds for testing items in serious play, and they already have changes to do during preseason, so they probably don't feel like testing yet another thing on top of everything else.

In addition, doing this goes right along with their very clear lean towards more teamfights and skirmishes, and faster games. Late-game splitpushes and backdooring is something they clearly don't want anymore, and all the champions that rely on late-game and scale hard are going to be indirectly nerfed, whereas fighters will be given an indirect compensation buff after Spear's upcoming removal in the top-lane. (AKA, kayle nerfed, garen nerfed, darius nerfed, jax, irelia, kled, and olaf buffed).

High-engage tanks and tanky fighters will be the meta in this upcoming season, and we will probably see the return of traditional crit adc's as the new meta, with Jhin leading all of them, thanks to the changes being made to the Energize ability (imagine energized 4th shot, with energize stacking and fleet footwork proccing left and right. Not looking forward to it.) Juggernauts are going to be hard-nerfed, as Conquerer's true damage will be removed, with only a slight compensation buff on the damage stacks. This means garen will be meh again, and darius will only be good in low-mid elo.

So. In conclusion, Riot doesn't feel like spending any man-hours reworking items, and wants to heavily push league into shorter games with more teamfights and skirmishes so esports will be more fun to watch (and thus more profitable. They make most of their money through esports, after all.) With the upcoming Wild Rift port, this will be a necessity, as they even said that Wild Rift will be shorter than most games on PC and more simplified.

They are basically pandering to shorter attention spans and trying to force-evolve the MOBA genre into something more bite-sized and easier to digest for the masses. If you look through all the changes, everything supports this claim. They are streamlining this game into something swift, easy to understand, straightforward, and with zero bells or whistles. They want something simple, marketable, nice-looking, and sleek. Hell, even the login screen supports this, as it now looks very sleek and clean, but also sort of sterile.

Remember how I said there was no GOOD reason for them removing these items? I stand by that. I don't think these changes are good. I think these changes are going to turn this game into a sterile bland-fest akin to what HOTS or Overwatch became. I think the meta will stagnate more and more, as Riot removes every single weird or off-meta option/strategy, and turn this game into something not only "easy to get into", but also perfect for esports, as the rules, items, and champions will be easy to stream and for audiences to understand. Strategies will be known at a glance. Everyone will have their role to play, and that's it, no weirdness, no creativity allowed, just whatever Riot decides is going to be pretty good that patch, most likely corresponding to skin releases/sales.

Just because an item isn't being used doesn't mean it should be taken out as long as it's not broken on any specific thing. There aren't that many items in League, it doesn't clutter shop. If players can't figure out how to shop then playing the game is the least of their problems.

It's primarily an item to use against AD comps and isn't a marksman item, naturally it is going to be used less often. If it had 60mr 60armor like old zzrot stats it would be a core item.

DeusVult1 votes

it will never be a core item. Its a tank item with an active that shuts off tower aggro, but the the user isnt auto-targetted upon the end of the active. So the tank, who is building stats to tank the turret shots, might not be the one to be targetted when the effect ends.

Shovel Bot1 votes

It isn't a tank item, it's a fighter/split pusher item with defensive stats. Nothing wrong with an item not being used by AP, assassins, and marksman. All for the better really.

It could be good in a meta where towers weren't dog shit

I use it. NOT EVERY GAME; but I use it. riste played it at least once in the past few months. I don't have a problem with keeping underused items around. They don't both anybody.

I actually ENJOY using Ohmwrecker in the games where I can justify building it. It was a lot of fun, partly because, it IS fun to use, and partly for the novelty.

Funnily enough that's the point. Everyone wants the item reworked, made more appealing. Few care about it in it's current iteration, but that doesn't mean they don't want a better version of it.

I make it and use it. Not every game, or even most of them, but sometimes. I enjoy it a lot, when I do make it.

I don't think that underuse is a good reason to remove an item, besides.

Pika Fox4 votes

It will likely return, as its a named item. But until then its better to remove it and figure out what to do with it than just rework it and try to make a failed item work.

ShadowKnight3 votes

ik a lot of people meme about it but i actually use it a lot, i think its really cool and interesting, a lot of people don't expect it and i like testing out weird things, my smurf is a onetrick ivern https://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=lverned%20It

It'd be worth using if towers posed any sort of threat after 5 minutes but they just become as threatening as a litter of puppies.

i also know they changed penetrating bullets to ohmwrecker on PBE but its not the same bro ;-;

all rito has to do is to rework it into disable/fortify turr.. buuut no. x.x

Sure, Ohmwrecker... But what about Wriggle? His item Wriggle's Lantern has has been missing from the game for years, as well as Grez (Grez's Spectral Latern) and there's nothing else named after either of them still in the game! Oh, as well as Ohmwrecker, With the removal of TT Woggle's Deathcap will be gone from League (though it's moved to TFT).

Apparently these prizes expire. Which is fine I guess - unless they removed Total Biscuit or Tim Buckley (Represented by his character Zeke), who had by far way more referrals than anybody else, and were both denied their prize of making a champion. So yeah Zeke's and Total Biscuits should always stay.

I miss abusing zzrot when it was first released. You could place it under your mid tower and the voidlings could run all of the way across the lane and hit the tower. They also helped CS and gave an ungodly amount of laning power to Cho Gath and Heimer. Good times

Ohmwrecker and Zz'rot have already been confirmed to be having their names reused elsewhere in the future. So they will be kept in some form.

yeah i saw, in PBE they replace piercing shots passive on towers with ohmwrecker, but i feel like the tower disabling mechanic is a really interesting idea and they didn't test it enough for it to be removed

Sukishoo2 votes

Well they could always reuse that on another item, but of course needs some work since most people never use it.

give it 150 more hp and 10 more armor and it wont feel so bad to build and 100 % more hp regen for 250 or 350 more cost. Id also massively buff Point runner to 35% movement speed and normalize it over a 3.5 -3.75 second ramp up time because its extremely unclear how long it takes to ramp up currently. (id rather make it a non unique passive but make it 15% movement speed with no ramp up time around towers and ZZrots portals but this is very unlikely) Edit: this then makes this a practically must build item among current defensive items but i think that other ones needs be buffed also so i hold the stance that it needs these buffs.

DEFINITELY a keeper. It's an effect that desrves to stay, plus I love watching Trick2G making ohmwrecker Udyr plays.

CoolKnightST1 votes

Just rework it into a one time use active:

  • Cost: 600 gold
  • Build into: item 3800 (with this item it would have a 500 combine cost) item 2065 (in the reworked version it would cost 2300 gold & with this included have a 250 combine cost)

Price wise it should be enouge of a trade for it's cost. The enemy player basicly has to have a Killing spree to make it even worth the gold investment. When the enemy only has a dubble kill you have to get something out of it after otherwise it's a null operation. Generally the item would be strong since so long you get an objective out of it. It might be worth it.

Otherwise tho if the enemy has died many times in a row that 600 gold becomes a little bit more expensive and unless you naturally go for it you probally wouldn't want to invest in it.

It might be a good item when your behind to get someone's shutdown gold.

Removing Omwrecker really highlights something I've always had an opinion about regarding League's items vs. Dota's. The items in Dota are far more interesting than the stuff here. I always have pushed and suggested to Riot since season 1 to add more interesting items. And for a time, we got them through boot enchantments (now gone), Banner of Command (now gone, use to be a summoner spell), Force of Nature (gone), heart of gold (gone), Atmas, DFG, Innvervating Locket, Madred's, all of them gone.

We're stuck with such generic and simple items, that there's really no item build interest in this game anymore. The most interesting item, I believe, right now is Stoneplate Gargoyle, and it has such a high requirement that you barely see it in the game, unless you have a tank and the game is at late, which is no longer happens in League. I expected some item shop revamp at preseason but it seems Riot has forsaken designing League to be a game of choice any longer. It's all RNG and high burst fights. No other strategy or choice allowed.
