This is Riot's matchmaking system Diamond 4 vs not 30 lvl :) Pretty good matchmaking for "the game with most people"

What

  • Ok, so this seems to be a normal 5v5 match. The game determines one's skill with MMR, when you win games you gain MMR and when you lose games you lose MMR. The higher your MMR the better your rank.

  • Now, there are 2 different playlists I believe, Ranked ( Ranked Draft Pick) and Normals (TeamBuilder, Blind Pick and Normal Draft Pick). The Ranked and Normals playlist both use 2 different sources of MMR to determine skill.

How

  • The higher you climb on the ladder the better people become, thus there isn't as much people up there; this explains why Platinum ELO contains the top 5% of all NA League players and Challenger contains .01% or the top NA League players. This makes que times a lot longer for higher ELO players; because there are not as many of them.

  • The higher your rank the more competitive the game becomes, so Riot implemented ranked decay to automatically demote players in higher ELO (Plat+) if they don't play for a certain amount of time.

So now, people in Platinum and higher need to play Ranked a lot to keep their rank, this way the game is more competitive. They usually don't have time for normals, but there are a few occasions where someone from Plat, Diamond, Master or Challenger want to chill with some friends in Normals. If the game were to look for someone around the Diamond Rank, it would take hours because no else in Diamond is wanting to play normals, they want to climb the ranks.

So they made it to where everyone has separate MMR from Ranked and Normals. I myself am Platinum, I've been playing a lot of Normals with my brother lately and he is only level 30. It wouldn't be fair to him if my MMR was brought from the Ranked playlist and allocated into the search engine to find people around Plat MMR. The game would be too frustrating for him to play and unfair.

Too much explanation about a thing that is so poorly done by Rito. First I dont care about the ranked system of the game. I play for fun - normals. So when rito comes out and say that LOL - has the biggest player base in the whole universe - that means you DONT Get matched with people that played the game a lot more than you. Because the other 3 games i played todays were fine 24-29 lvl. This game i'm matched with a person that has a head start of me. He has 2k games with 32432432 rune pages and full hero roster. And you are telling me when i get shit stomped by people like him - i can ejnoy the f game? His friend is 10 lvl - he played 20 games for example - i played 60 for example - not so fair but not a lot in the difference. His friend is 2k games vs me that i have 60 games - aaannndd this is normal only because i need to care about a ranked system that i'm not in ??? This is why LOL will never beat WOW in playerbase - becasue the company is full of sh.t

You people need to stop with the plat/diamonds don't play normals excuse for the shitty normal match making, a lot of plat/diamonds have THOUSANDS of normal games played. Even in his screen shot the Diamond player has ~2k normal games, which is the highest out of the 10 in that game, vs only ~200 ranked games for an entire season which means he doesn't even play ranked much.

Also, to keep your rank you only needed to play 1 soloq game per month basically.

Very well done explanation sir! It may not be much but have my upvote in appreciation.

It's because of the level 10 on their side. Not only that, normal games matchmaking is based on the amount of normal games played. Diamonds don't have a lot of normal games usually.

He started playing ranked the moment he reached level 30 and never played normals for a very long time. His normals mmr is still stuck at that unranked-silver level even though his ranked elo is increasing. The problem here is Riot making separate mmrs for ranked and normals. Though I find it pretty reasonable.

I used to think League had decent matchmaking. It was all lies. Been trying to play with some buddies and we've lost every game because it's a complete stomp of people new to pvp Vs Gold and Platinum veterans.

I had the same problem, when i was level 24 i was solo mid vs a diamond 3 yasuo and i hadn't even entered the que with a level 30, I was flying solo...Its such a let down that riot want the community to clean up its act but puts people in situations where their games arent fun because they are completely outclassed and at a disadvantage for no reason.
