@Riot why two similar mid lane mages released back to back?

Aurelion sol was the last champion released and he is used in the midlane for the most part. The next champion riot released was taliyah and she is a mid lane mage as well and shares a similar semi global ability with aurelion sol. Riot always says they dont release two of the same type of champion in a row but they did just that. Can someone explain why? i would've figured it wouldve been an assassin next but two mages in a row is a bit over kill.

With her gank ability i really think Riot intended her to play in the jungle more. even her passive allows for faster speed movement when near walls. She's still a mage granted but mid is a secondary thought.

They've been wanting to make a Tradition mage for a while. According to them, Sol isn't a traditional mage in the sense that his positioning needs are special. When traditional mage is being said, think of Lissandra, Brand, etc.

They're not similar at all, a rudimentary examination of their strengths and weaknesses will tell you that.

Sol is, in my opinion, much more similar to Singed than Taliyah. Both Singed and Sol deal damage constantly while running, utilizing their other spells to keep targets in that constant damage area.

Taliyah is focused on zone control, with all of her abilities forcing her to think about the map and how she'll cut it up or make it harder for enemies. She doesn't have a constant source of damage like Sol.

Side point: I don't particularly want another tank just yet, so I'm OK if Riot spends a bit more time reviewing their last "Assassin" so they don't make the same mistakes.

thanks everyone, all your comments helped a lot. i just wish a champ could be released next that fits my play style.
