So :D the other they i stumbled upon some kinda "weird" things played buy professional support mains... as a support main myself that got me thinking ... whats the logic behind all theese stuff ? Let me introduce you my scenario... rought day, got into ranked games, lost a few, won a few... later that evening , i started watching some pro replays and here are some stuffs that i didnt fully understand : There is that game, Aphro my man playing Alistar,(with a Xayah) against a rakan cait bot... he started coin, also his scondary tree was precision... could you help me why? whats the reasoning behind that? also ... Olleh , rakan - varus against alistar-ezreal... he started coin while spellthiefs edge is the common one... also , why? Ive seen quite a couple guys building ardent, redemption or zeeke's (that item with your ultimate activations) first... id like to ask you , what the reasoning behind each one of them? when to build each one? THANK YOU SO MUCH if any of you fellow SUPPORT MAINS could help me im new to this role but im eager :D

Spellthief's is usually for ranged, poke-y champs like Sona, Karma, Morgana. It gives you AP. I don't take it because it takes too long for me to complete the quest.

Ancient coin gives you movement speed and it's easier to complete the quest. I usually complete the quest and get wards 8-11 mins into the game.

I rarely play melee so the relic shield really is like a last resort. Sometimes I complete the quest at 22 mins in when I get that. Lol. ALSO, IN MY ELO, MY TEAM NEVER LETS ME LAST HIT TO GET THE MINIONS!

Anyway, I usually go for ancient coin if I know that laning phase won't last long... think, if laning phase doesn't last long, then you can't get $ from spellthief because in order to get 10-20 gold from it, you need to attack the enemy.. but they're not there anymore! I also like ancient coin because in general, more gold. It's like Christmas.

Only thing I know, and I could be wrong, but coin is usually for more passive / sustain in lane when you're up against heavy poke. Precision might help get autos out a bit faster (it's a nice pick on lux).

Ardent and Redemption are always good buys, especially the first one if you have a heavy AS carry like a Lucian, Caitlyn, or Kog'maw. Zeke's, I have no idea, better damage against tanky teams? I rarely buy it and even when I do, it's on supports with low ult CDs (Sona / Lux / Leona)

Coin is also a lot faster. For me, it's painful to take anything else because it's so slow.

  1. Coin on Alistar: I personally wouldn't do it, but I guess you get more gold out of it. Rakan will not really poke you down but go all-in, and if Cait tries to poke you down you can engage on her. So you don't necessarily need the sustain from relic since you have your passive. And triumph in precision can let you survive an all-in in bot-lane, should you get a kill in a fight (again, all-in supports present, not poke or sustain supports).

  2. Coin on Rakan: I'm not a good Rakan player, but I imagine that it's quite hard to consistently get your spellthief procs for gold, so coin will give much more gold, specially after laning phase. In lane, what do you do against Ali/Ez? You jump on Ez, he E's away. You jump on Alistar, he Q's (does this interrupt the Rakan knockup btw?), then he can W you away so you can't jump back to your ADC. I could be completely wrong of course, but this is how I imagine it.

  3. Ardent: Build this first if you are a support who values the AP, the +heal/shield and (this is important) have an ADC with a good synergy with the Ardent passive (on-hit ADC's like Kog'maw or Varus, basically anyone who builds Rageblade). Typically this is for the more aggressive enchanters.

  4. Redemption: Never really a bad item, but clearly best on enchanters. The health is nice to survive more, the mana regen is amazing (you really need it) and let's you spam more shields/heals/poke. Get this if you play an enchanter and there is no good Ardent synergy with your ADC. In addition, really good if you plan on building Athene's later on (Sona, Karma, Lux support. Although you probably want Ardent first here).

  5. Zeke's: Tanky stats and the slow area make this really good when you play a tank who either engages and is then in the enemy's face or when you need more peel for your ADC. There are actually few other items which offer such a good peel for your ADC than this (Randuins perhaps, but costs way more). You can get it as your first item on someone like Leona or Alistar, making sure that the enemy can't escape after your engage. Or on Braum/Taric (probably second item) to offer even more peel. Also worth mentioning here is that some ADC's (those with high AS) have more synergy with this item as they trigger the damage part more. So if you get it for the damage part, only with a Rageblade user.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask more if it's unclear.
