How do you itemize against a fed Irelia?

Before I start, I'd like to point out I was the one playing Irelia, so this isn't a QQ thread or anything.

In the link, you can see that my damage to champions is roughly split 50/25/25 with physical, magical, and true. Now lets say I'm playing adc, and the Irelia with 70% tenacity can dive me with impunity. What should my defensive item be? Ga to counter her kill potential, typical Banshees, Randuins, or perhaps warmogs?

TL:DR how do you stop a snowballing Irelia (on any role, not just ADC)?

You don't you politely but firmly tell her to leave.

Well a fed champion is a fed champion. Not even thornmail can save you against a fed Vayne 100% of the time.

Against Irelia, tho? Defensively, I believe health is the way to go (since she deals somewhat hybrid damage, and her true damage is capped instead of %hp based). Warmogs, maybe thornmail (she is aa reliant for the true damage). Sunfire's cape is a good item, since she has to get in close outside of her ult.

You don't. You defend for half an hour in painful sieges until irelia falls behind and starts to feed your team. Well, it worked for me.

Equip the fountain

Since it's so heavy, you can't leave the area.

If warmogs was still a really high health item I would say build that but riot doesn't seem to like having tanky items be really effect.

See the nerfs to tank items such as frozen heart and omen over the past couple years for examples.

You buy three rejuvenation beads, then upgrade them into a "Rosary" and finally use its active ability "Prayer" to pray to a higher power that you'll somehow survive and escape

You don't. That's the thing, Irelia has to be countered by cc just like every other assassin. Except, if your tank goes in on her, she will kill them after the duration and heal herself, escaping. If they don't go in on her, she will run away, without dying. Shes in the same state Tryndamere is in, both can be incredibly strong and it doesn't actually go down in terms of skill, but champion picks, pick the meta or feed.

Randuin's is a good item against her. Her magic damage just comes out of her E and she won't be building ap to increase its damage. Randuin's gives you hp and decreases her attack speed, and both are crucial to reducing her damage.

Just hope she doesn't get fed enough that she can squeeze in a item 3153 into her build before the late game. If that happens you're well and truly boned.

JJI7443/10/2015, 9:11:31 PM1 votes

Randuin's generally is your best bet to survive. Irelia (typically) will deal very low magic damage. The only reason you have such high magic damage is that you rushed Devourer, and jungle Irelia is... very iffy since Devourer enchant was nerfed.

Though generally speaking, if any Trinity user gets Trinity+another offensive item by 17 minutes, the game is going to go badly for the opponents unless it gets dragged out to 35+ minutes when Trinity+base damages fall off.

If you are a tank. I would advice rushing a Frozen Heart, since Irelia primary relies on Auto Attacking you.

More HP is most useful, and lowering her DPS is too, so I think Randuins would be a good defensive item.

you don't do anything to stop a fed irelia her kit is a broken trash design. Has everything you want in a kit, stupidly tanky, unccable, stuns, slows, heals, true damage, phyical, magical, range, melee, gap closers what more you want she needs to be completely rework or gutted til she is unplayable and then if sees play gutted again.

How do you itemize against a fed Irelia?

If you're a tank or fighter, one of the armor items that reduces attack speed will do an ok job at dealing with the bulk of her damage, hitting the physical and auto-attack portions. Omen, Heart, Warden's Mail all work reasonably well against the likes of Irelia or Jax, and they come with an added benefit they aid the squishier members of your team even if Irelia doesn't focus you.

If you're a marksman or mage, Guardian Angel is the best defensive item you can get against most anti-carries. They dive you, slap the taste out of your mouth with their combo, then there's this awkward pause where they didn't get a kill or resets, and are sitting in the middle of your team. It's incredibly hard to effectively wipe out a priority target with GA, and even with dying twice - you usually cause significant problems.

In both cases counter-building a fed champion requires your team sticks together to help one-another deal with the Irelia. If you let a fed champion roam the map forcing 1v1s, they're only going to get more fed.

Generally speaking fighters and assassins are better than average duelists and worse than average team-fighters as well. That's pretty much the case with most snowbally champions. Irelia isn't to extreme in either direction, but from what I've seen - she does excel more in 1v1 situations than team-fight situations, so grouping up (preferably not in single file) will negate a bit of Irelia's power.

Saixos3/10/2015, 1:57:00 PM1 votes

It depends on the situation and who you're playing as and with, really. Speaking from a pure adc's perspective, the items that I would go for are likely to be either GA or frozen mallet.

GA would be if I'm playing someone like kogmaw - koggy relies on his team to protect him, and as such if irelia jumps on him his team should pound/peel for him, and if she kills him then his GA will save him while she's likely to die. Generally if I think I can rely on my team to save me if irelia catches me, I'd go for GA.

Frozen mallet sounds weird, but if I'm playing an ADC like Lucian or Vayne who is generally pretty good in duels and I can't really rely on my teammates, then I'd take this. With irelia's passive, assuming she has 70% tenacity the trick to dealing with her would be constantly apply the CC, rather than apply a large duration of it. Frozen mallet (maybe with red buff as well) would allow you to dash away from her and slow her and kite her, once she jumps on you. I'd also probably try to make sure that her health is above mine before she dashes on top of me, so that I won't be stunned, and thus won't attack her before that, opting to run away instead. The bonus health from mallet would also help deal with her true damage more effectively. I'd go for this above warmogs any day.

They should make a tombstone a purchasable item for this situation. Being dead is the only thing to stop her from killing you.

Wheatloaf3/10/2015, 2:23:49 PM1 votes

A step-by-step guide to dealing with a fed Irelia:

  1. Look at your minimap.

  2. Identify Irelia's location on the map.

  3. Ping your entire team to go for whatever objective is farthest from the Irelia.

  4. Repeat until you either win or the Irelia splitpushes you to death.

NOTE: These instructions work against a variety of champions! Simply replace "Irelia" with the champion of your choice to get your new instructions.
