Why League has Disenfranchised the Average Player and What we can do About It

League isn't fun anymore

Sitting at my desk here typing this I already understand the futility of this post. For me writing has always been a sort of therapy, so I guess even if this is scrutinized or otherwise ignored it really won't matter to me, I will have said my piece. To start, I want to make it clear that for awhile, let's say the first few months of playing, I was blissfully unaware of just how toxic the community of league really is. Most of us have been playing too long and have forgotten those blissful days. It is nothing like the terribly rude welcome that new players now face. I started playing in Season 2 and paid little attention to how big the community was becoming. I was lucky, in that people took the time to teach me the basics. I never considered being anything more than a casual player. And there lies the problem. This game is not meant for casual players. LoL has focused onto the less than 1% of professional gamers that play, Riot games has consistently demonstrated they only care about money, and there is only one thing we can do.

Initially, League was fun to play with other random people. It was actually kind of gratifying. And looking back we should have all seen the warning signs. It wasn't gratifying to beat the enemy team, so much as it was gratifying to finally get a random group of people to come together and actually cooperate. Now the community is so toxic that it's just too painful. If you are in a 5v5, chances are that at least two of the people you are in a match with on your team, are at each other's throats for one reason or another. And to get to the point it all stems from the disconnect between Riot's pro-gamers and advertisements, and the reality of the game. We are all just normal people, looking to have fun in a game that isn't made for us. Overtime the learning curve for the game has become far too steep for the casual gamer. Reworks only focus on making the game entertaining to watch played by people who actually know what they are doing, and most of them render several subsequent champions obsolete. And yet that is where Riot is making its money.

League isn't a game for you and I, it's a game for their sponsored players to rake in more money for them. I mean just go to their website and click the games tab and see their selection. LoL is Riot's only game. With an estimated 1 Billion dollars in "Micro-transactions", which means that Riot made approximately 1 Billion dollars in sales, to the average consumer in 2014. Riot has no need to spend money creating another game, at least not in the near future. They can just add meaningless reworks to characters, add a few more champions and skins and they can get right back at it. So why would you as a consumer and an average gamer, that the game doesn't even appeal to, hand the company 1 billion dollars a year? At no expense to them?

The only way for us to affect change in a gaming community, is to stop playing. If you look across the forum there are plenty of people who took the time to write posts that feel the same way. Many of the people who were around when Riot first started this game, we are all gone now. My advice is if you plan on sticking around, just step back and take a good look at what you are doing and who you are giving your money to. For all of you who have an issue with the game, I hope this helps you understand what you are feeling a little better. For those of you who are content with things the way they are, I wish you the best of luck. GLHF and what not.

I have not played many games since I've been back, so I don't know about the subtle changes they have made in the game this season. And I will make an attempt to suffer through it, but all changes taken into account, one thing remains universal. The community is for the most part trash. While E-Sport, is the "Future" for the gaming industry, it has robbed this game, for me at least, of many of the facets that made it enjoyable. The players around now at a vast majority take this way too seriously, and don't truly understand where their frustration lies.

Long gone are the days of just hopping into a Skype call or onto Curse to just enjoy a match or two in relative peace. Everything about the game punishes you; the death timers, the unbalanced champions, the constantly evolving kits for most characters. I mean they even changed intermediate bots to be harder than many bronze level players. Perhaps I am too old for this now. I just want to get on and play a few ARAM games in peace and have a laugh or two. The game is far too much.

As far as the Competitive scene is concerned I feel the cost is nothing to them. I mean honestly, how much do you think Riot pays for that? Again, they make one billion dollars a year selling skins and champions. It literally costs them nothing. Intangible digital content with minimal production cost to them. That's not to include sponsorship, merchandise, and revenue from those tournaments. It's not a labor of love to satiate fans. There is money to be had there. Especially with a growing population of people who pay money to attend those functions.

In a previous post that I will link above, someone addressed Riot's drive to make competitive play more entertaining. It's the same thing in the NFL now. The NFL's mission is to make more money, and adding wow factor makes more money. So to me, Riot is getting their money back, with interest.

"learning curve for the game has become far too steep for the casual gamer," completely true. I remember League kits being very simple. Now we have overloaded kits and very complex ones. Look at Sol for example. His kit is completely unfriendly to a casual player. The New Katarina is also the same. I understand trying to raise the skill ceiling of champions. But sometimes less is more.

Well the culture of gaming overall has changed. Deep professional play and popularity of a game go hand in hand because one will lead to the other. I would agree in that I don't get into games because of this but for the community, and I don't like how competitive culture has affected the gaming culture and community of popular games, which usually include a large Professional following.

I completely agree. Gaming has turned into more of a business than it ever was. The change is that now it is affecting the people who play them adversely. Just think about where you spend your time and money. Both things you never get back once they're gone.

It's the very nature of a came that goes from being nothing to being extremely popular. When players first start out, everything is shiny and new, everyone is just playing for fun. As the game develops more and more and manages to stick around, it has to cater to its player base getting more experienced while the addition of new players decreases. League isn't catering to the 1% it's catering to it's player base getting naturally better.

To put this in perspective I've played since before season 1 and managed to obtain gold on my first season of ranking (wasn't too bad having played Dota as one of the original beta testers - the Warcraft III one). If I played today the way I played back then; I wouldn't make it past bronze 3 or 2 at best. Reaction times are faster, skills are more complicated, builds are more complex, there are so many more actives to worry about and passives. I mean what happened to just using Sivir mid building bloothirster first with two phantom dancers and winning that way?

League is just a game that's come to maturity and the community has changed along with it. The days of just trying things out for fun are long gone with how experienced the average player is and the expectation they now have. Give games like Overwatch 3-5 years and you'll see the same thing.

In my opinion...

Fuck this game, fuck Riot, and fuck anyone who plays AD Teemo.

And especially, fuck the people who designed this game to be as addicting as fucking heroin.
