Reworks and new champions. Tactics vs mechanics in soloque.
Hello everyone! I know there is alot of text but if you don't want to read everything I've made a short summary at the end.
I've never really cared enough about reworks and new champions to complain about it but the Aurelion Sol
changes on the PBE really got to me. I've never been a Sol main nor have i played him much but I recently wanted to play him more because I wanted to impact the other lanes but I was tired of jungle. The new changes will give Sol more burst and a bit less sustain damage before you get some CDR. People who play Sol don't play him for the insane one shot potential or short burst trades in lane. This champion is very unique both to play, play against and play with. He changes the whole game by just having that constant threat of roams and giant stuns coming from over walls.
There are many champions that have great roams and ganks but none of them are much like Sol. Since Sol was released I can only think of one and sometimes three champions that actually impact the strategy and gameplay of the entire match and that is Ivern
and SOMETIMES Yuumi
or Taliyah
. Ivern for the protect the carry gameplay, Yuumi paired with a stealth or mobile champion like Evelynn
or Udyr
or Taliyah who can box you in or cut you off from an objective from time to time. Small but still a tactical mechanic. . Is there anything different about playing against Zoe, qiyana or sylas mid other than the matchup in lane? Sylas changes teamfights, yes. qiyana changes teamfights, yes and Zoe randomly 1shots you over a wall from time to time. There are probably hundreds of different things changing from game to game in pro matches depending on the team comp or even runes and builds. But if you design the game for pro players only, you'll only have a couple of hundred players.
In soloque we lack the champions that change the way we play the game. Whether you like him or not, Trick2g is a phenomenal tactical player. He carry his team while being 0-9 on Yorick or win a 4v5 by outsmarting the enemies. No matter if he's a smurf or not he wins with tactical decisions in soloque rather than mechanical outplays or being super fed. His favorite champions are those who can split push and make plays on their own. Splitting champions change the game a whole lot and you have to put some thought into that baron call since botlane is pushing and the Udyr with ZZ rot is MIA. Now I'm not saying we need more champions that can play on their own. We have a whole bunch of those already. (
etc, etc.) But what I am saying is that we need more champions that impact the game in a special way.
I'm not asking for something that would change the game or the idea of 3 lanes or anything. If you ask me the funneling meta was probably the worst state of the game in recent times. But what I am asking for is more unique champions. I feel like the gameplay of an individual match is being changed more by this meme
rather than qiyana, sylas, neeko, pyke, kaisa, ornn, kayn, rakan, xayah, camille or kled.
To summarize: Newer champions and recent reworks seems to make the champions more difficult to play mechanically and put less focus on tactical decisions. I'm not saying all old champions have a mastermind strategy behind them or that all new champions are solo champions. I'm saying soloque is becoming more about win lane win game and less about playing together. While winning lane should give you a good lead going into the midgame, there should be other options to take for a more team oriented playstyle. Let me know what you think. Do we need more tactical champions or more dashes, cc's and guaranteed crits/high burst combos?
Edit: Tactical means tactical decisions you can do alone even if they impact the game, see example about Ivern. It's soloque after all.
