RANKED: The Silver 5 and Bronze Curse that cannot be broken.

Hello. This has been something I have been thinking about for a while now, and It's time to make a post.

This game is beginning to reach a point for me where it's becoming no longer fun. First of all, I am in Silver 5. When I completed my placement I was in Silver 4. I was demoted due to three games in a row with disconnects in every mid game, which in turn caused losses in otherwise winning games. Since then, The Ranked experience for me has gone from bad to worse, and I know many players out there feel the same way. I have entered the pit we all know as ELO hell. Now this unfortunately condemns me to being matched with players that troll, or are generally unskilled. I am generally positive in chat, try to discourage ragers, offer helpful tips and strategies to players that might be falling behind, and even prop them up by sacrificing kills so they feel a little better about themselves. This game is highly team oriented, and generally, players in Silver 5 and Bronze don't seem to understand that. They are more content with blaming others, than improving their own game, or listening to teammates that issue instructions based on the fact they actually know what the hell is going on in the Mini-map. I am getting tired of being matched with players below my own personal skill level, and have no ability to control emotions on the rift based on a flawed assessment of personal skill, called MMR.

As a result of the above, now I absolutely CANNOT get out of silver 5. It's literally impossible. I wouldn't be posting about this if I even fluctuated between Silver 4 and 5. I would be completely content with that. I have played over 50 games in Silver 5. Whenever I get a winning streak, and perform extremely well in my role, I get an amount of LP that's insulting. 10-14 per match. Then when I lose, I go back so hard that it's unrecoverable. 20-25LP is lost per loss. It's impractical to win 10 ranked games in a row, just to get your MMR back where it should be so you can actually win a decent amount of LP. Even if I were to win 50% of my games, that would get me nowhere. I would literally have to win 70-80% of the games I play just to move up the ladder. In Silver and Bronze this is just not practical. I have even tried getting good Duo partners to help with wins. While this has helped some, (I cracked 40LP for the first time in 4 weeks recently. Took 4 wins in a row.) One loss and I am right back where I started. There is literally no opportunity for us players, who are good players (and not feeders) and take the game seriously to move up the ladder to Gold or Platinum. In a game, where your deaths make up 10% or less of the total deaths on the team, you can safely say it was not your fault for the loss when you get rolled on. I am TIRED of being matched with players that do not take the game and the sportsmanship it requires as seriously as me, and are below my personal skill level.

Ok so given this rant, which is over, I would like advice, stories, tips or tricks to get out of Silver considering this flawed MMR system isn't going to be changed any time soon. I am calling upon Platinums, Diamonds, Masters, and Challengers to share on this thread. Not just for myself, but the other players trapped in the same pit I am in. I am currently doing everything I know how, as I mentioned above, including evaluating my plays to find where my misakes are or where I can improve.

This is a far reaching question and I am sure the Answer is, "You need to get up there first." Is there any way to get matched with or even against Golds or Platinums so I can have a better experience, and actually play with players that understand all aspects of the game including sportsmanship and most importantly, over-communication? Is there any way I can gain more LP from match wins? I am also sure the answer to this is "You need higher MMR first."

However the above answers do not provide a solution to the inherent problem, which is the flawed way MMR detects skill. Its far too generalized. Is there a more complex formula I am unaware of? Or is it just based on wins and losses? Does KDA or objective control factor in? The amount of wards purchased and used? Skill shot hit ratio? Inhibitors taken down? Towers killed? If I am indeed correct and all MMR consists of is wins/losses, then in order to more accurately determine skill, a more complex formula needs to be employed, or else great players are going to continue to become frustrated, and ultimately leave the game. Players need a sense of reward for the long hours they put in. I am not saying hand out promotions like candy, but atleast make it attainable for those who had a bad break over 5 or 6 games, or lost due to constant disconnects.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to the constructive replies so we can make this game better for the community. Hopefully this thread catches on enough that Riot sees it as well.

P.S. If I placed this in the wrong section MODS, my apologies. I got warned last time for violating rules by placing a topic in the wrong section, and I hope I didn't this time.

Nah, it's absolutely broken. Not only do I get trolls but I get smurfs and it's annoying. I can do pretty well each game usually, but my team lets me down over and over or the enemy team is clearly not bronze. Worst ranking structure in any game that I have ever seen.

I think the system needs to be changed, but for different reasons. I don't like the dual LP/MMR system as they kind of conflict with each other. I feel in your case, though, the sad truth is you might actually belong where you are. You might have some knowledge and awareness that warrants you to be a higher level, but until you yourself can achieve this, there isn't much you can do. Also its a bad way to gauge your "place" at the end of the season, thats when the trolls come out to play. These people do deserve to be punished, but that isn't the point or topic of this thread.

I agree with you. I do have some things to work on but to a point I do not feel I deserve being in the pit I am in. All I want is a chance to move out of the tier I am in, and get matched with better players, who take the game more seriously.

You may be right about the end of the season thing. Given this is my first season I do not have the experience of other seasons to agree with this. Maybe at the beginning of Season 5 I will have more luck. I just want an honest chance, and not to to be thrown right back where I started after winning 3 games straight. It's hard work!

There isn't really any big secret. Its just improve your play and keep playing. The LP gains/losses should balance out over time.

As for how to improve:

  1. Improving your CS with Kennen would help a lot, and I would advise against WotA most of the time.

  2. Your CSing with Lucian is... inconsistant. Some games you have really good CS numbers (for Silver) but some games you are way way under par. I know lane pressure plays a lot into CS, but being able to keep up respectable CS when behind is kinda important.

Velkoz Human CSing remains...Inconsistent.

MMR is shit! I see players in bronze who go 13+ kills each game and less than 5 deaths pretty much each game and they still lose due to troll feeder/ afk mates . RITO BEST COMPANY kappa

acepil0t3 votes

Umm KDA isn't really a measure of skill. It's not that difficult to learn how to play a carry champion well and get many kills. What is more difficult and takes skill is cooperating with the team to capitalize on those such kills.

XxRonaldoxX71 votes

ummm.. by only getting objectives and losing by 50 kills you will ultimately lose anyway. in the end it will be a huge teamfight that you will lose even you are the best obj securer in the world. so kda is a measure of skill. but its not the only measure of skill, and im ont talking about adcs......... im talking about jg top mids that get good kdas then get 2 towers top and roam to help but ofc they still lose cuz of trolls

Yup....welcome to my world. I consistantly go 7 kills or more before my first death as jungle, and usually take one or two turrets. Then because of weak players I lose, and am stuck in Bronze V Gold 3 to Bronze 5. You would think that it would be easy.....nope....Hardest thing ever. and what makes it worse is I am sure that I dont play up to Gold standard because I am used to playing with people who cant play. So I do things in bronze I never would in gold. If that makes sense.

They are more content with blaming others, than improving their own game

You just opened your own post by blaming others for your losses, now you're criticizing them for doing the same. Double standard?

Whenever I get a winning streak, and perform extremely well in my role, I get an amount of LP that's insulting. 10-14 per match. Then when I lose, I go back so hard that it's unrecoverable. 20-25LP is lost per loss. It's impractical to win 10 ranked games in a row, just to get your MMR back where it should be so you can actually win a decent amount of LP.

If you're losing more LP than your winning on average then your hidden MMR is too low for the division your in (i.e. the system actually believes your true ranking should be a division or two lower). Check lolnexus when your next game is loading and see who you are matched with. If there's a lot of bronze players, then your MMR may actually be worse than you think, not better. The way to advance is to first improve your play to the point where you are getting matched with equal or higher ranked players, then your LP gains will follow. The system has this built in "delay" to prevent players from skyrocketing into new divisions on a fluke win streak. Instead consistency is the key.

For me this season, After improving my game in bronze 5, I eventually found I was always matched with Silver 5/4/3 players. By this time I was gaining 30 LP per win and losing only 5-10. Even at a 50% win rate getting to my series was inevitable.

You have to find the one role where you have the biggest incremental contribution over the average player who takes on that role. Maybe you are a great mid player - but there are a lot of great mid players - so you don't necessarily add that much to your teams chances by taking mid. For me I found I could make the greatest difference from the support role - which is largely underrated in lower divisions. Also I can pretty much guarantee every game if I call support I'll get to play it. Take a very busy champ like Zyra or Karma who is constantly poking in bottom lane and it won't be boring. When you get good enough with a support you will actually elevate your ADC's game by helping them win the CS war too Now you have a direct influence on 2/5 of your team and if you truly are good enough you will find the wins will come.

This season I climbed from Bronze 5 to Silver 1 doing this.

Also, don't get suckered in by the concept of "ELO Hell". If you really are surrounded by trolls / noobs / afkers then so are your opponents. So for every game you play there are 4 chances for your team to get a troll (your 4 teammates) and 5 chances for their team to get a troll. Hence, regardless of skill you would be at an advantage more often than not. The fact is (hard to swallow sometimes) you are probably in the right division (if not higher than where you should be based on your LP gains/losses).

The pain is real,

Most people who offer the consolation of "it should balance out" don't realise that the statistics don't have to balance out for an individual, but for the community as a whole. So while you get a streak of leavers/trolls on your team someone else gets that of the opposite team and artificially climb the ladder. Someone goes up while someone goes down just due to statistics. With 27 million players daily there is one poor bastard who, if you count his games that had a troll/leaver somewhere, has had that troll/leaver on his team for the last 17 of those games in a row.... So be thankful you're not that guy? The only way to fix this is to reduce the number of games with trolls/leavers, and that is problematic... sorry i don't have better advice other than the standard positive attitude, wards, communication that you describe yourself having already.

Nothing wrong with matchmaking except the duo/premades. If you really are a gold player and duo with a goldplayer you should be able to get gold easily.

The scores you talk about are just excuses for toxic players to ruin games. How exactly do you engage in team fights. Are you warding? You will stay and probably deserve to be in bronze. Gold players will not drop to silver V. They will at least consistantly do the right thing in games to win them when it is possible.

Thank you for the replies everyone.

@RuGu2 I guess that does show something. There is a lack of wards in my games, Maybe i focus on my build too much, and make that fatal mistake like other silvers and bronzes?

@JJI744 my inconsistencies in CS as Lucian are usually fueled by a lack of warding from my support or poor playing by my support. If I don't get a fair chance in lane, because of poor decisions by my support, then getting good CS is damn hard. The concept of last hitting is simple, but you cannot control your last hits when your support damages creeps, or engages at the worst times possible. Is it so hard to let THEM push?

Testosterox1 votes

Also, you can say that KDA is a measure of skill, because feeding in the top lane, for example 4 deaths and no kills after 12 minutes, is unacceptable. It means you are playing too agresssively, not paying attention to any wards you may or may not be throwing down, or paying attention to MIAS. Top lane is very delicate, and if you feed that lane, usually the game is over, because now you have a super powerful gank machine, who controls the game.

I was a gold player last season. Made it into Gold 3 and was super happy. Then life happened and it forced me to stop playing not only LOL but pretty much give up all my free time and play catch up with school and work. After two months I jumped back on, played a few regular games, and felt good about going ranked. Due to the fact that I hadnt played in a while, I lost my first game, and I got demoted to gold 5. played another one and someone was a troll and I got demoted to silver. finally ended up in silver 3. Which you know, whatever, my thoughts were, the new season is coming up, no biggie. I'll re rank at the beginning of the year and be fine. Due to connection issues and trolls I lost 5 of 5 and got into bronze. I was a little bummed but made it my goal to get back into Gold atleast....yeah right....and my experience has been LOL hell. For example, my last game literally played this morning, I went a pantheon jungle and had a final score of 21-7-10, and yet we lost due to stupid people chasing when the other team had baron.(players were very young and dumb so to speak) The game before that support Thresh, 1-4-22 we lost.....before that mid Morgana 6-1-10 loss, another game as jungle 22-7-23 loss. I could go on but I wont My point is that I am a gold ranked player in Bronze Hell. No matter how good I play, no matter my record, when the team you are with play like crap, eventually the other team will win. I have a 10-38 ranked record right now. so a 20% win rate, when last year in gold I had a 74-108 record, roughly a 70% win rate. They need to figure out something else to get you league points so you can rank up regardless of your team. Something to do with kills and assists, which will give you league standing and allow you rank up. That would be prime.
