Gangplank Mid is Sleeper OP

Before I get into the analysis of the post, I just wanted to give some background info/qualifications about myself. I'm BestCritplankNA and today I just hit Gold 1 with a 64.1% win ratio on Gangplank mid. I have 64 games on Gangplank mid in ranked, but have about 160 total including normals. According to www.lolskill.net I am 27.2% better than the average Gangplank. You can find my op.gg here: http://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=BestCritplankNA

I made a post similar to this before where I compared Gangplank mid to pre-rework Nidalee, but at the time no one really liked it. But today I was browsing surrenderat20 and this post by Phreak made me want to give it another shot: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/esports/aYUEYaY2-almost-everyone-wants-to-see-champion-diversity-in-lcs?comment=001400000001 . When talking about why champions get nerfed when played outside their main roles he says, "The changes to champions when they worked in certain lanes came from the gameplay impact of that lane. When Janna walked into lane, Pressed Q in the vague direction of the minions, and then immediately last hit the entire wave, that was an issue. When Lulu clicked "E" and then pressed "Q" twice, causing you to lose 50% of your health without it honestly being a real skill shot, that was the issue. When Annie's low level base damages and stun were so obnoxiously high you immediately lost any possible 2v2 fight bottom lane, that was the issue."

As a Gangplank mid main, I can tell you his gameplay impact on the lane is bullshit and should be added to Phreak's list. As soon as you buy you Statikk Shiv (first item), you literally crit people for 50% of their hp for the rest of the game. My largest crit in ranked was 1892 (one shot a Sona), and the best part is Parrrley is on a 4.75 second cd. If I was to describe his playstyle I would call it hit and run, similar to pre-rework Nidalee. You shoot a q and run away. No one can stop you from doing this either, because you have a free cleanse/heal so cc does nothing, and late game you literally can have over 590 movement speed. With ult slowing and granting vision of their entire team so you can catch up to them, there is nothing they can do to stop Gangplank from 2 shotting the enemy squishies. Not to mention you also grant 4320 gold worth of AD to your team.

It's also extremely difficult to shut him down, since you spend most of your money on crit and attack speed (which is normally wasted). If Gangplank is behind in items, he still crits you for 50% of your health. The only difference is that he crits less. If you start flask with a bunch of potions and the Alchemy mastery, you sustain through the harsh early game so it solves the problem of the bad early game, especially since you have a low cd ranged farming ability.

So, when I say Gangplank mid is bullshit I mean it. Historically I believe the highest average win rate ever was Kayle in Korea with 63% around the time the Runnans/Nashors build came out. For North America, it was preseason Warwick and Season 2 Ezreal with 60% win rates. If Gangplank mid can have a 64% win rate where he is countered by Morellonomicon and the popular solo que mids such as Zed, Fizz, Katarina, Syndra, and LeBlanc (I pick him into every counterpick listed here except Fizz), I can only imagine what it's like when those champions are not in the meta.

Discuss.

I'm sorry but I can't really see gangplank winning against a well played mage or assassin. Sure you can cleanse a CC with your orange but when happens when Zed ults you? Or when Xerath pokes you down to nothing from outside of your Parley range? Or when Syndra 100-0s you in the time that you can Parley once? There's no beating that outside of building tanky, and that kind of defeats the purpose of being a midlaner in this meta.

I love GP, he was the second youtube video I put on my channel for LoL and I went 19/2/10 having not really played him that much. I've never tried AP GP mid though but now that I'm starting to play mid a lot more using Syndra, Veigar and Ahri I think I want to give it a try. His kit is really good for mid lane now that I really think about it. Built in CC removal + Heal, slows for days with his Ult + Passsive, built in speed and attack buff and that Point + Click proc on hit Q is just nasty. The only thing that can suck about GP is he can be squishy going mid so the focus would be real if the other team was paying attention, but as you said if you get some boots of swift you could just W -> R -> Q a poor squishy and disappear before anyone knew what just happened.

Played a game a couple of months ago with a guy playing GP mid and he destroyed a kat, he even mentioned that gp actually counters most mid laners and he loved playing gp mid.

Not so good on gp myself but i know he is a pain and will generally always accept a gp mid in TB.

If you're building crit and attack speed on GP mid, how is that any different from saying any AD mid is OP?

I play mostly Coop vs AI, so that's not exactly current meta obviously, but my fiance took AD Fiora mid yesterday and wrecked face with it.

Assassins typically go mid regardless of AP or AD but any ADC can be super oppressive in mid.

I can only imagine what it's like when those champions are not in the meta.

Considering that the last GP mid got rolled over by me playing Talon, idk. Instead of doing anything, he was quite useless for the rest of the game...

I too love GP and fully support this thread. +1

GP support is also op.

So you rush Shiv after starting Flask? When playing him top lane i usually build Phage then Shiv then finish the trinity, then IE

Well AD Malzahar is sleeper OP too, his voidlings can deal 400 damage an auto attack, you can easily build both item 3071 and item 3035, and get up to 3 voidlings out when you're at 40% CDR. You can literally deal about 1500DPS on him.

Also, every AD bruiser with a good poke or mobility is sleeper OP mid against "traditional" mid champions. Frankly mages are just to weak right now to keep up, and they have been for a while.

let me try it out and tell you what i think

But he has no waveclear, is melee, and must choose wether to poke and lose all his mana, or farm with Q to make up for your weak waveclear. Plus no hard CC to stop Katarinas and Karthuses from messing your whole team up.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing GP mid (got a penta stolen from me by a Thresh recently) and I have won vs Zeds and Fizzes, but to say he is OP is still a little too far
