Ah! Ringing a bell as to more that I enjoy! Yea one thing that I have taken notice of so far while playing the game and spectating some stuff is that roles don't seem to be the same as they were in HOTS. I'd have to branch out a bit more, though quite a lot of champions in this game so it gets kinda tough to figure out what to try and buy next. I have been looking at Thresh and Tryndamere, and Talon does seem pretty fun to play. I have also played quite lot of Raynor after he was reworked, but only other ranged assassin other than him and Zul I played often was Junkrat. I also played a lot of Malthael and Arthas in solo lane, sometimes if it fit, ETC as well both solo lane and tank. Solo lane is definitely my favorite role, so I've been trying out Top Lane in this game very often. I would love any more suggestions that come to mind if you wanna.
First off, in terms of Top Lane your picks listed aren't too far off. Both Garen and Shen are played Top, with Shen also being capable to be played as a Support in the Bot Lane, though it's not his intended role, that being Top lane. Tryndamere is also a Top-laner, but is also viable in the Jungle depending on how you play and/or build him. Talon is seen mostly in the Mid-Lane, though he can also be seen in the Jungle, but it's few and far between. Thresh is a Support, through and through, though he's a more Aggressive Support than others.
The reason I brought up more ranged Assassins is because the Assassins in HOTS mix both the Slayers/Assassins of LOL and the Marksmen of LOL into one class. But here in LOL, they're separate; roles are VERY DIFFERENT in LOL in comparison to HOTS. Also, because LOL doesn't have the shared XP system that HOTS has, it is alot more INDIVIDUALLY focused, meaning you CAN solo carry ALOT easier than you can in HOTS, because everyone levels separately. Note the operative word is CAN, in that statement. You CAN solo carry, not WILL. Because of the more individually-based focus, you are ALOT MORE responsible for your victories, AND you are more responsible for your failures as well. Because everyone levels separately, you can get left in the dust in both levels and items if you do poorly.
I hope I'm not overwhelming you, or discouraging you with these pointers as that is NOT my intention.
One major difference is the Subclass system that LOL has.
There are the main classes that champions belong to, and then there are subclasses of those main classes.
For example, the main classes for champs comparable to the Warriors of HOTS are:
Tanks; Subclasses are Vanguards and Wardens.
Fighters; Subclasses are Divers and Juggernauts.
The Tanks of LOL deal more in the CC/Disruption and Damage-Absorbing aspects of the Warriors of HOTS, while the Fighters take their more damage-based aspects.
Let's say that if the Talent trees got split in half and each class took half for keeps, the Tanks took the defense-based ones and the Fighters took the assault-based ones.
There are descriptions for each subclass that gives a general idea of what each one does, ideally speaking. All of these are taken from the League of Legends Wikia, just so you know.
Here's the one for Vanguards: Vanguards are offensive tanks. Vanguards lead the charge for their team and are specialize at getting action started. Their explosive team fight initiation seeks to catch enemies out of position while allowing allies to follow-up to devastating effect. An example of a Vanguard Tank is Alistar
.
Here's the one for Wardens: Wardens are defensive tanks. Wardens stand steadfast, seeking to hold the line by persistently locking down any on-comers who try to pass them. Wardens keep their allies out of harm’s way and allow them to safely deal with enemies caught in the fray. An example of a Warden Tank is Shen
.
Here's the one for Divers: Divers are the more mobile portion of the Fighter class. Divers excel at singling out high-priority targets to blitz toward, immediately forcing those targets (and their teammates) to deal with the diver’s presence. Divers are not as durable as the tanks or juggernauts of the world, but Divers can take their fair share of punishment while bringing enough damage to be a real kill threat if left unchecked. You don't list one of them that you've played as of yet, but an example of one of the Diver Fighters is
Camille.
Here's the one for Juggernauts: Juggernauts are melee titans who relentlessly march down the opposition and devastate those foolish enough to get within their grasp. They are the only subclass who excel at both dealing and taking significant amounts of damage, but in turn they have a tough time closing in on targets due to their low range and extremely limited mobility. An example of a Juggernaut Fighter is
Garen.
I can explain these more in-depth with another comment, just to make sure this one doesn't get too long or wordy.
