Getting Locked Out Due To Client Error

Why the heck do I get hit with a penalty for 'leaving' when it was an unknown error in the client that caused it? On my screen it was the "Pick Intent" Phase but my bf saw Ban Phase. Obviously not my fault for the timer running out when I couldn't do anything. Even got an Error message after wards, about 4 times then got the Penalty message. Why am I punished for this BS? Not sure if pic will show, haven't posted one before.
