So I've gone against a ryze a couple times now, mainly as an assassin, but even as a Syndra. There is almost no counter play to him other than to stay pretty far away and not let a single spell hit you because if you get hit by a spell flux your either chunked or frozen and blasted. So my question is where is the counter play to his kit? Over whelm him with numbers? Because even that doesn't work half the time.

Dodging his spells is counterplay. Granted he has a point and click root, so you'll have to bait it out.
Other than Q, his range is abysmal. I think even Annie out ranges his W and E.
He is slow. Get help from your jungler

You out sustain his level 1-6 which are weak AF.
And all in him at level 5 with almost anyone. WIN ONE fight and you can 1v1 him the rest of the game. Also his ult is so telegraphed. Pick Malph into him and gang bang his team when he ults in.
Outrange him or, if you are a Bruiser, build Magic Resist. Ryze is one of few AP Mages that can actually carry a game, so buying a ton of MR and Health is not frowned upon against him.
