1V1 & 2V2 game modes

Back in season 3 or 4 there were public queues for "1 vs 1" and "2 vs 2" games in Howling Abyss (HA). Since then there have been similar matches in pro tournaments, but not in public queues and during all these years there have not been any rotating game modes for 1 or 2 player teams, which opens up a suggestion: Could we get this game mode back

1V1 and 2V2 modes would be a great addition to the game whether you wanted to:

  • Improve your skill on a specific champion
  • Improve your skills on laning phase
  • Learn a new champion without letting your team down
  • Organize a mini tournament between your folks
  • Just have fun playing against or beside your friend
  • Watch pro players streaming their 1V1s
  • And much more!

The game modes used to allow recalling, shopping and healing which is usually forbidden in HA. Winner in 1 vs 1 matches was the player that first scored a kill, destroyed a turret or collected 100 minion bounties. 2 vs 2 winner was chosen similarly, but the teams had to score 2 kills and the first one to die could still re-spawn (it wasn't turned into a 2 vs 1).

In my opinion the rules were pretty straightforward which wasn't a bad thing. 100 minions / 1 turret / 1 (or 2) kills. Of course, after all the changes to turret and minion defenses since season 4, things could use some optimization. Nerfing champions that are specifically good in 1v1s should be avoided to not get the wrong picture from some match-ups. Having 3-5 (or even more) bans per team would be favorable, too, so every try-hard player wouldn't just commit to tier 1 picks, but playing more diversely. What comes to the map, HA is just fine, but something slightly changed could make it more popular. Not a straight Summoner's Rift copy like Magma Chamber was, but a small and diverse map with slightly more space than HA.

dominion did a few things.

  1. you could learn how to 1v1 with your champion by going bottom to 1v1.

  2. you could learn how to skirmish with your champion too with the various fights that would break out top side. 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, twas glorious every possible mechanical situation you might find yourself in with your champion you could practice for on dominion with very little lead up time to it because you start at lvl 3 and the map is smaller. TT is cool and all but leveling can be tedious on occasion and when a TT game drags on it's mindnumbingly tedious and frustrating, where as a dominion game dragging on to the final few points was a frantic race against time and a playmakers paradise.

  3. how to contest objectives, teaches that pretty well.

  4. how to use brush, teaches that very well too.

  5. the map is alive.

basically, bring back dominion ffs.

the 1v1 and 2v2 holiday modes were cool but i struggle to bleieve they got any worthwhile player base, still though the howling abyss could be opened up for a 1v1 and 2v2 mode, and instead of calling the mode ARAM let that be a submode of howling abyss instead.

game mode: HOWLING ABYSS match types: -ARAM -2v2 -1v1

but it makes too much sense to do so riot prolly won't do it. yolobeans yolochips yolokips

Behold! The amazingly beautiful Magma Chamber map, designed for 1v1/2v2 matches, now sadly retired and forgotten, probably never to be seen again, unless we demand loud enough!

There will never be a demand loud enough for riot to give a shit.

Well not with that attitude.

Riot's excuse for shitcaning Snowdown Showdown (the 1v1/2v2 mode) was that people played a few matches and then just kinda stopped, so it failed as a rgm. Thing is though, it should never have been a temporary thing. The mode gave definitive rules for a proper 1v1, a map to do it on, and spells/items specifically for it. The scenarios can't be properly replicated with current custom games: you can't recall on Howling Abyss, and Summoners Rift has side waves that can push down turrets, weird rules for siege minion waves, and no snowball spell to enable certain champions (and create hilarious moments like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2r-SgDdjyE ). If they brought it back as a permanent custom game option, it would see less play than other modes, sure, but it would also be a great addition for people who want to invoke the power of the ancient adage, "1v1 ME BRO!"
