Ward Problems PLEASE HELP!

When I ward, instead of the circle popping up displaying where I can ward, a ward just pops out to a random location and I can't position where it goes. I tried ward hopping behind my enemy w/ Lee Sin to hit him with my dragon rage, and instead my ward just goes to a random location that isn't where I wanted it to go. How can I position my wards again?

ur smart cast is turned on... this will cause u to auto cast the ward wherever ur cursor is, or move that area and once within range ward there

Which is what you should do when trying to ward hop with lee sin :)
