For most of the old auras prior to season 5 I think? Were extremely gold efficient after affecting more than 1 player. (ie: the aura holder and 1 ally, the gold efficiency was like 105%, with the entire ally team affected, it was like 300% to 400% efficient) While the cost to build and complete the item were relatively cheap (since they were mainly support items.
The reason for being so affordable is that supports don't last hit like the other roles and had to rely on assists, passive income, and GP5 to get access to these items.)
Some auras also affected minions. Runic Bulwark being a big culprit in the removal of auras. It allow tankier minions for tower siege-ing in all stages of the game
