How to ping ready abilities?

Somehow i can't ping ready abilities, i hit g, then click the icon (as i supposes to do in theory), but instead of pinging, it casts and this is super annoying Is it because quick cast, or...? When it's on cooldown, it works, but often i have to do it twice before it actually pings
