Malzahar in General

So... Even with this recent nerf to Malzahar, I am just trying to see how he is fair at the moment. He has been banned nearly every game, but when I have seen him, he is rather impossible to deal with.

You cant assasinate him.. cause his ult AND his passive. Most binds and hooks wont work cause the voids get in the way AND his passive too... His visions kill anything that makes minions like heimer and zyra, things that would pop his passive more readily. And he was still doing more damage than a LUX with like half my ap.

I am a logical person and I really cant find a good way to counter this. I think tank with heavy engage that he cant escape from. But again, he just ults and has a bunch of minions just attack you. And he gets that extra half-second to ult cause you have to pop his passive.

Mages can't out-trade him, assassins cant assassinate him. Just have to AD him to death... with more than one person :/. I guess everything has a counter to "Use a shit ton of people". Is he supposed to be worse at team fighting than other mages? Cause hes not... He locks down anyone who jumps at the back side, and puts visions which bounce, minions which keep spawning more.. and silences tons of people. And the silence is the only thing that takes skill to hit.
