4th Lane

I was looking over game play board and it seems like it revolves around support role a lot. One thing that I always wondered, why not just add a 4th lane? that way everyone as a lane, it might require a lot of adjustments but it would be a nice change to the game.

It would change the game too much, and it would just throw everything on its head. People would have to find a new lane for the 4th player, it removes the support role entirely, it basically just means "4 damage dealers and a jungler"

Adding a 4th lane would mean making a new map and a whole new meta for the fourth lane. That would be an entirely new mode, not a simple change to the Summoner's Rift.

I used to really like the idea, but there's a few negatives to it. One of the big ones being you have to account for either a smaller jungle or a larger map if you just make the jungle the same size but jam in a 4th lane. If the map is too small, roaming ganks become a huge issue to the point that lanes wouldn't matter. If you're one of the inner lanes you'd have people diving you with potentially 4-5 enemies every few minutes. On the flip side, if you spread them out enough to make it safer, the far lanes will effectively never interact. This isn't desirable if you're trying to make it a team based oriented game.

On a more practical level, Riot has said previously they would rather just focus all their attention on SR instead of multiple maps. It's part of the reason you don't see extra gamemodes using alternate maps very often. It's a ton of work to design a map. They actually had an alternate map called magma chamber in the works a number of years back that they scrapped because it just wasn't panning out at all for how they wanted to see it.

There's always the option of having multiple maps, but again practicality and queue health comes up. There's some regions where they can barely support ARAM during the week. Back when there was a 3s ranked ladder here, some regions didn't even have TT available, and others only on weekends.

Finally I would argue that with LoL being one of the most prominent eSports in the world it would detract from that to suddenly having a different playing field. There's a reason why most professional sports don't change up the dimensions all that often. Players practice with certain dimensions for years.

I personally would love to see supports get more love, but an extra lane is liking bashing at weeds with a mallet. It's way more work than needed, and it doesn't really do a lot to fix they issue.
