How Do You Learn To Build? :)

Hey League community!

I have been playing league for about a year and 1/2 now, and it is embarrassing to say that I still don't really know how to build items. Please don't make fun of me, I really want tips! Most of my league career I've been getting builds off champion.gg or op.gg, I have no idea how to build on my own. Like, if I didn't look at the guide, I would barely know the 3rd item onward.

I am looking for ANY ADVICE POSSIBLE! Thank you all in advance! How do I learn? :)

it's all math. you need to go and find out what all of the champions base stats are and how much they grow per level. you can simplify this by just looking at level 1 and level 18 and comparing all of the champions.

you'll notice some trends and you'll want to look for outliers. use those to determine which stats work the best for your champion of choice

then you'll do and inventory check on all of the items in the shop (it's harder now since they removed it from the client)

prioritize those stats chosen. you'll need 1 form of damage, 1 pair of boots, and 1 defensive item. the rest is your choice so pick your poison.

once you've gotten your build figured out then you add in masteries to supplement your playstyle

then you add runes to shore up your weaknesses.

you can interchange the shop inventory check for masteries if you'd rather build around a keystone as opposed to an item.

The best way is to start to learn what item designs make that item BEST at, and then it's a matter of balancing your champion's needs with any changes to those priorities that the ally or enemy team composition may create.

Do you have a role you typically play? I'll happily give you an example breakdown of that role's itemization if it would be helpful.

Its pretty simple, you build what you need. If you go to the store and you need food but you buy headphones then you arn't being efficient now are you? Same concept for league, if you are playing adc and you get chunked at the start of a fight you prob need lifesteal to sustain back up. etc.

I look at the composition of the enemy team I'm facing, and aside from a few tried-and-true items on whoever I'm playing, alter my build to best deal with that composition.

For example, if I'm playing a Juggernaut and am facing an AD heavy team= Armor Runes/Tanky Masteries and Armor-heavy itemization.

I can explain in more detail if you like.

You need to think about what you need in situations, need speed?item 3742item 3100 item 3285 item 3044 Need sticking power when you get onto someone or a lot of hp on your next item? item 3022 If its early you can get item 3025 before its screwed by % pen. If you know what situations to build an item you can think of it when you should build it.

You may be tempted to build defense when you just need to position better, I sued to do that before.

Some item components can be good to sit on item 3136 item 3134 item 3035 item 3082 item 1053 item 3191 item 3155 item 3101 ' ' I'm a dork when it comes to building items and I theorycraft out of matches. I take what to build ingame as a fun challenge to figure out so I don't think I have troubles there.

Well what do you need at the time? Is there an assassin diving for you? item 3026 item 3157

Do you need to carry and get strong as fast as possible? Rush item 3089 as a 3rd

Enemy team building resistances? Get some penetration items.

  1. Know the cost + build paths of your items. Knowing that you can back and grab x component + is extremely important for itemization.
  2. Don't always straight rush items. Grabbing the component of one item can sometimes be more important than finishing another.
  3. Pay attention to your opponents build. This is probably the most important part. For example, if you're an ADC and their only tank champion (Zac jungle) is building straight AP, there's no need to grab a Last Whisperer item. This varies greatly from game to game, but just paying attention to builds in game will tell you what items YOU should be building.

Easiest thing you could do is look at your favorite champ's stats than build stuff for it, ex:

I build Nautilus top lane like this,

item 3742 item 3102 item 3025 item 3001 item 3047 (or item 3111 if the opponents are AP/CC abuse) then the last item is typically item 3026 but usually depends on my situation.
