Anyone have any tips for a newbie?
I'm coming from a lot of Play time of Sion and Kayle, so I'm not sure Morde will work out like either of them.
He seems to be an ad/ap hybrid, but he feels like he's supposed to be a tank.
Like, if I'm gonna play the Master of Metal, which lane should I play in with him, and what kind of items should I be building? Who should I ban? That kinda stuff.
Toplane: He builds like a Battle mage. Solid buys Ludens Rylais Liandrys gunblade Deathcap
zhonyas Abyssal Mask are decent offensive/ defensive options
Items that synergize but are sub optimal Steraks, Trinity force, lichbane(still trying to make lichbane work) proto belt. Nashors tooth, Rageblade
Runes. Mrpen marks Scaling HP seals Ap glyphs and Quints ( if you don't go Ap runes it's a garenteed loss of lane)
Cooldown reduction is Mordes hardest stat to buy while still retaining the Balance of items for Damage, Mobility & Durability.
If you get ahead buy Ludens 1st
You can take him Midlane vs Assassins and some mages (FYI zone control mages wreck Mordes day)
You can take him Botlane ( if you have a duo partner I won't recommend until 100+ games
Get good with his W, and it will pay off in spades.
I used to play Mord mid alot and got myself to gold. being on mid against a mage puts you at disadvantage at being kited. You ideal might want to consider purchasing a Ryla. There's a challenger/master player who mostly play mid/bot roles and occasionally top. He is extremely talent with mordekaiser and usually runs 
for his damage as for defense base on whether he's behind or ahead he goes
. Runs death-fire for extra damage and storm-raiders for extra mobility/anti slow.

Let's see. Going through your list of questions I would say...
You should play Morde top lane. I've played him in all positions, but top lane would probably be the best to start off with.
Morde is nice in the way where almost all items in the game are beneficial to Morde in some way. My personal core item for Morde that I get no matter what is hextech gunblade. I'm sure not all Morde mains would agree with me on that though.
Champions that would be the biggest problems for you would be ones that can kite really well and champions that prenvent your auto attacks from going through. Jax is the one I've been banning the most when playing Morde.
