New Player Experience - Mentor Accounts (community volunteering project idea)

Hello,

Gnar

Over the past few months (or years, who knows, time flies fast when playing League!) there's been multiple discussions about the experience of new players, tutorials, infos, beginner bots and all that. The thing is, every new player is different and remembering my own experience I can think of so many problems and stupid issues that nothing but a huge manual would solve (and who plays games to read fat manuals?). I was lucky - I had a bunch of friends who were playing League and patiently explained everything to me and corrected even those unique mistakes I was making. But not everyone gets that, so here's a thought:

How about allowing players to attach a "Mentor Account" to their main account? With requirements in games played/rank achieved or whatever would be the most sensible option. And with that account, allow them easy access to games with newbie players (either making it co-op only or matching two teams with a mentor on each to avoid abuse). With an option for the new players to check whether they want a mentor in their game or not (if one is available) and matchmaking built on that.

This way experienced players with good intentions could give back to community and have a non-comittal way of helping others (no need to befriend the newbies and feel like you have to keep mentoring your friend or feel like a douche) and newbies would get a good and, more importantly, UPDATED source of knowledge about the game without feeling like they're bothering someone who's not willing to help.

Since the Mentor Account would not be leveling up, it would make for a crappy smurf, and being bound to the main account, would mean the player wouldn't be safe from punishment. Also, signing up for the Mentor program could easily mean someone accepts the fact that any negativity shown in mentored games will result in a ban.

The idea came to me, because I had a free 30 minutes to spare while waiting for my chicken to finish frying and I felt like helping someone new to the game. I made a new account (hassle! and pointless in the long run) and went into a bot game to see if there's some confused player. Well, it was just smurfs/28 lvl guys all with flash/ignite and stuff. It's not really possible to do that right now, I'd have to troll my way through a bunch of games so that the system assigned me with actual newbies. Nobody benefits from that.

I know that there are many people in the community who wouldn't mind helping others given the proper tools, but many are also very occasional do-gooders and don't want to sign up for initiatives requiring bigger commitment.

Since Riot keeps saying they want the community to be positive, this could be a way to let the positive part of it do something nice and make entering the League easier on others.

Because let's face it - with an ever-changing game like LoL that just gets more complex, no amount of beginner hints will do the trick.

So yep, just a thought here :)

I personally really like this concept; a solid reason why many players create smurfs is to help out their friend/family/loved one with learning the ropes, without the added difficulty of their elo on their main account. Smurfing is a double-edged sword for this kind of reason; they have the MOBA selection (based on your experience with MOBA'S) at the beginning when you create your account, but I do not feel that is enough. I feel as if this would be the first step in fixing the smurfing issue; maybe they could take the idea farther to help solve more problems.

Either way, great idea!

The additional issue here is that you probably play better even on your smurfs (some habits just stick with you) so it's possible you will be thrown into the smurf queue and drag your newbie friends with you giving them a harsh experience of getting owned by frustrated smurfs who are on the lookout for some easy games :P

Thank you for the input!

That's another huge reason as to why I don't like the smurfing system... I don't like being on the giving end of that stick. XD I wanted to create my smurf so that I'd have a different account I could take seriously (I tend to bullshit too much with my friends to take ranked as seriously as I normally would), and the first ten levels really put a damper on my day; i'm either facing other assholes, or I AM the asshole. I think this is a fantastic idea. I find myself bringing friends to play this game and I enjoy teaching them to love it as much as I do... Good work! summoner 31

Hello,

This seems like a wonderful idea! It would get new players "in the know" and feel good for players that are already veterans. I have some suggestions though.

What you described sounds cool, but I would prefer it to be further simplified.

What if there was a specific queue you could join to help new players? Like a say, someone who chose that they are new to the game has the option to not only "invite friend" but also "invite mentor".

The person mentoring would enter a queue similar to team builder and wait to join a game.

At the end, the new player would rate his experience and perhaps the mentor could get rewards based on their rating.

Hopefully something similar to this will be implemented someday. In the meantime, someone should really start a group that does this or something.

I've seen this idea before, just not given a name or a set of rules other than "attach to their main account."

This is a solidly constructed idea. +1
