Gangplank and spellthief's edge
Why is it that Gangplanks passive doesn't proc spellthief's edge, while brands passive does? Both of them deal magic damage per second, and both can be proc'd by a spell.

Pirates don't thief spells. They thief booty.
Brand's passive applies spell effects such as Rylai's and Spellvamp.
Gangplank's passive does not apply spell effects as it as coded as an on-hit effect.
Gangplanks Q isn't coded as a spell and his passive only applies on autos
His Q is actually coded as a spell, but it's also coded as a melee attack. It's why it can activate Spellblade and proc it on hit, like Ezreal's Q except more awesome cuz it can crit.
Riot is seemingly allergic to consistency. This is just one area of many.
Wrong, Ganplank's passive is an attack modifier, not a spell modifier. Spellthief does not proc off of dots from attacks in any scenario
Yeah, I demand equality.
maybe it's to deter people from buying that item on gp ._.
Doesn't work. It's still a staple of support-plank.
What? Why the hell would you not build Relic Shield on him? You get the bonus gold and give your laner CS.
His biggest strength in lane is his reliable poke. His gold generation is about the same since the frost line gives better gold generation. You could argue the benefit of giving gold to your lane partner, but I don't like forcibly pushing lane when I lack reliable peel. Unless that's the plan - which is rare for Yolo queue.
Just wondering: does Darius passive proc spellthief? It's magic damage afterall.
Not sure since it is both an on-hit and on-spell effect. Someone should test that.
No. Darius's bleed does not apply spell effects like Rylai's, Spell Vamp or Spellthief's Edge Tribute.

It used to though but they removed it
It's Riot's way of saying "If you're going to break the meta, at least build SupPlank properly."
Brand's Blaze passive is an on-spell effect like Morgana's Soul Siphon or Annie's stun. Blaze probably needs to apply Spell Effects because in addition to the damage, Blaze applies a debuff which enhances Brand's abilities on the target, and which is a spell effect.
Gangplank's passive is bonus on-hit damage for landing autoattacks. Bonus on-hit damage from autoattacks does not generally proc Spell Vamp. Gangplank's Q is a castable melee autoattack with 625 range.
