An Eperimental Azir Build

I have played a ton of Azir since the nerfs, and I like would like to propose a build I've tried recently with great success. I love Azir and encourage you to listen to my reason. Just because this isn't the build being used by Faker or Expressions doesn't mean it's bad. This build is a playstyle variant for a more DPS based Azir, the q damage will be less but you will land more autos. In addition lategame you will have the added AP of item 3040 which will give a good amount of AP and can be postponed until it is finished.

I rush item 3070 .

This will give me all the mana I need for a long time, I won't need to buy any other mana item or get blue buff in order to stay in lane. Rushing item 3165 or item 3174 seems preferable for early game but I want to stack this tear early.

I will get item 3115 item 3020 next.

With my cdr from runes and masteries this will bring me to my cdr cap. I believe this item to be superior to all else as an early game damage item. It is gold efficient WITHOUT The passive and with nerfed w range it really helps you follow roaming owners and trade in lane. The lack of 20 ap compared to item 3165 isn't a huge deal because this will scale better into late game and it feels AMAZING to land 2 autos after one q.

I build item 3157 oritem 3089 . He needs ap badly. I assume it's obvious this is core.

I finish item 3040. It gives me around 120 ap for 2700 gold. It costs so little for so much and it's active goes so well with your e. I only purchase this when tear is stacked. I'm usually done stacking before teamfights.

At this point you need magic pen item 3001 item 3135 oritem 3151 .

And item 3116 aren't a bad finish.

So here's a comparison to the meta build for Azir.

item 3165 item 3020 item 3089 item 3116 item 3157 item 3135

vs.

item 3115 item 3020 item 3089 item 3048 item 3157 item 3135

CONS: You are missing out on item 3116 slow unless you don't build penetration. You are delaying CDR and won't have damage as early.

PROS:
Higher DPS mid-game without having to sell morellos for nashors, definitely enough mana for every situation (you're basically resourceless at this point), higher AP overall.

So a little rundown of a game:

You could buy item 1027 oritem 1076 at the start of the game, I would go item 1076.

Then I would buy item 3070 item 3108. Giving me stats that mimick item 3108 item 3114 but cost 120 more gold.

I would buyitem 3101 for 1200, compared to the 980 combine cost of item 3165.

Note that item 3115 costs 620 gold more than item 3165.

The extra gold you just spent is returned in more comfortable kiting from attack speed, your stacking tear making itself more gold efficient, and much better mana regen.

Now I would buy a 120 Ap item and sorc boots, this is the same for both builds.

Then I would get item 3040 which gives me more ap and an active that I prefer to item 3116. item 3116 slow gives you more opportunities to land auto attacks, so this is a huge weakness to my build. The AP isn't that much more unless you do the item 3027 item 3040 combo. I watched Faker try this out, it took way too long but he one shot the enemy team.

VERDICT:

15,305 Gold vs. 15,615 Gold (would actually cost less if you skipitem 1076)

310 more gold over all for 50% attack speed. You can choose rylais or banshees over magic pen, but I wouldn't recommend it. Take my build if you want to split push alot, go top and don't want ROA, or if you are vs. an immoblie mage mid such as Cassiopeia Lux Syndra because they WILL sit atop your soldiers and take many hits. If you have a teamcomp with Amumu Sejuani Leona Veigar Varus this build will be better at dealing DPS to immobile targets.

Azir main here.

I've typically written off Seraph's as useless on him, but perhaps with CDR runes it could be different. I'll try this later and let you know how this compares to my typical builds (RoA+Nashor+Ionian, 2x Morello+Sorc)

I agree that the mana is useless, but the ap it gives is gold efficient and tear alone allows you to roam and not be a static liability vs roaming mids. I only buy item 3040 in one go, I don't buy item 3003 and sit on it.

What are people's thoughts on item 3115 ?

I usually used it as a core item on him, though his soldiers don't get the AA on-hit boost, but people had been telling me it's worse than item 3165

Here's the issue -

Azir has low base damage (especially post nerf). You're delaying his first big item by a tear in gold, and then you're buying one of the lowest AP items in the game (Nashors) for some imagined power spike. I've done the math before and Nashors is only more efficient than a Morellonomicon on Azir if the person you're attacking stays inside your soldier range for 4 autos or more. Any less, and the extra AP from the Morellonomicon will deal more damage than the Nashors. Couple this with Nashors costing ~500 more than Morello, AND delaying it by 720 gold for your tear and you're going to go into the midgame feeling extremely weak as well as vulnerable since your trades will be less bursty.

Azir does not really have mana issues once he has a Morellonomicon, so I imagine you're building the tear to overcome the lack of regen on a Nashors. Personally I wouldn't recommend the item at all, unless you want to run a build without 15% scaling CDR glyphs, in which case you would go Morellonomicon into Nashors OR just build Ionians. And Zhonyas is a much better item on Azir than Seraphs imo, especially considering the early game weaknesses of Tear.

In a world where Morellonomicon does not exist, and Athenes/Nashors are your only choices - I like this build. But unfortunately Morellonomicon is simply too good, and the champion happens to be balanced around that strength.
