Please for the love of god add match cancellation like DOTA

Denthis··319 votes·9,039 views

In DOTA 2 if someone in the game leaves early or if terrible network conditions are detected the game is cancelled and you are free to leave without penalty

Why can't we have this in League? Why am I losing anywhere from 15-20 LP because someone decided to play ranked and then left before the first minion clash?

I had 2 afks in my last game. We couldn't even leave ourselves. We had to open mid and hope to god the enemy team didn't want to farm kills to pad their kda and would end early for us.

11 minutes after the game had started we'd lost through no fault of our own. One person on our team lost a promo game, I took a -19 LP hit.

I don't care if we have pausing and all the other things DOTA has but why on earth do we not have this?

Thank you. I can agree with this wholeheartedly. I had an AFK last game I played in Ranked, lost 26 LP and now I have to win my next game if I don't want to be demoted.

Goodluck.

For those not in the know, the way DOTA's safe-leave system works is:

Somebody afks/disconnects within the first 5 minutes. After a five-minute period of inactivity, the other players receive a notice that the game is safe to leave and can be left without any stats being recorded; no wins, no losses, items like boosts not consumed, etc.

Somebody afks/disconnects after the first 5 minutes. Same 5 minute inactivity period, game can be left. However, this counts as a loss. You get no punishment from the leaver-buster system, but the game still counts against you as a loss.

The five minute inactivity period is net, by the way. So a player dc's for 3 minutes, comes back and plays for 5 before losing connection again, then is dc'd for another 2 minutes. This counts as the full five minutes for the other players to safely abandon and save themselves the wasted time and effort of fighting a losing game.

Not sure how it works in their ranked system, as I avoid competitive play like the plague, though it can't be worse than what we've got.

I have to agree here. League's ranked system is plagued with the down sides of AFKs. Dota's system is a LOT better. Even if it doesn't fix EVERY problem, it is better than what we currently have... nothing.

We have the AFK buster. It's better than nothing but it doesn't solve the problem of LP loss for those left behind. Punishing the AFKer and those who queued with him is the only logical solution. I've suggested this , along with many others , frequently. The afk problem effects those in lower ranks the most and RITO's focus is high rank play so expect to be ignored.

I was more saying helping the bictims of an AFK when I said nothing, but at least we do have punishment yes.

Why 'those that Q with him'?

Say I just had a great game as a Support, and the ADC had an amazing game. So he asks to Duo, and I accept.

Then he AFKs.

What did I do to deserve to get screwed over here?

This 'guilty by association' part being tacked on is idiotic and greatly discourages new players from grouping with people they find through playing, out of fear that maybe next game they lose connection and get me hit with a Penalty.

The idea is to BUILD a Community... not have people scared to death to invite some one to Duo or Team Up.

To prevent abuse. People will quickly exploit the system by queuing up with a friend then having their friend disconnect if a loss is inevitable.

You could also implement a scaling punishment system where the amount of time banned scales with the amount of AFKs. This would be less harsh on people who may have the occasional internet problem. RITO actually does this already with the AFK buster.

I'm not suggesting a knee jerk reaction that is "idiotic" as you say. I've thought this out , perhaps you spend more time thinking before you open your mouth and start calling names. Thank goodness RITO doesn't take suggestions from the average forum goer.

KillerKell1 votes
  1. I didn't call you idiotic, I called your idea idiotic. So I didn't call you a name.

  2. What you are suggestion will cause people to not want to Q with others, especially those they just met, out of fear that the other might DC or AFK and then cause a penalty to some one who did nothing wrong.

  3. Do you know how stupid it is, even in a 5 Man Group, to try to 'pass the dodge'? Especially with Leave Buster putting people on waiting timers of over an Hour? It's a highly inefficient way of trying to 'abuse' a system.

So what you are suggesting is that EVERYONE should risk this, just because a few MIGHT try to abuse it. Yes, let's punish everyone who happens to invite some people they've played with in a situation that is completely out of there control. Pure genius!

Also, how many times is some ones 'friend' going to take the hit for the team and be regulated to watching a clock tick down until they can play again?

And if you read the suggestions, you'd see most are asking for a DOTA style of this, where the impact of No Loss is only in the first 10 Minutes or so of the game from some one not making it into game or getting in and finding a bad connection and not being able to get back in with it fixed.

We aren't talking about waiting until there is 1 HP on the Nexus and pulling your Router here. We're talking about a way to mitigate EVERYONE being punished when the game starts out a 5v4 due to AFK/DC.

Which totally eliminates your "abusing when the loss is inevitable" case.

So perhaps you should take your own advice, simmer down, and rethink this... because you built a strawman to attack me with.

And I love how you accuse me of name calling (which I didn't do) but try to label me an 'average forum poster'. I'm sorry, are you an 'above average forum poster' or some 'Super Saiyan Forum Poster'? That was a blatant attempt to suggest that you are better than me because I'm merely some 'average forum poster'. Well thanks for the memo, I shall let the world know you are thy Forum God!!!

We bow to your Forum Greatness, oh Forum God! I'm sure Riot will be here any minute to put your genius plan into code, because you are not merely some 'average forum poster'.

Um , speaking of reading ...... I clearly stated you punish those whose queue with up with the leaver as well. With a scaling time punishment based on the number of offenses.

Are you on drugs ?

No, no, no.

You ORIGINALLY said the AFK and those that Q with him.

Give lp "loss" to the afker. Typo corrected. Why would I give lp to afker ? I shouldn't have had to spell that out for you. You still need some help.

KillerKell1 votes

Oh wow, you STILL don't understand.

You see, I GRANTED that you meant 'LP Loss'... but you SPECIFIED to the AFK, NOT to his Q Partners.

So you went from "AFK and Q Partners" to "AFK". You went from your stance, which hurts people who happen to randomly Q with some one, to just "AFK" and not the Q in what you typed.

It wasn't a typo, it was a complete omission, that lead to you completely agreeing with the stance I had given.

THAT is the point.

So let's try this again... "Um , you just give lp (loss) to afker and let the short handed team surrender (or just lose) with no lp loss."

See, you STILL didn't return to your original of "and those that Q with him".

But some how, you took that I thought you meant the AFK should GAIN lp? This is why I question your reading comprehension. I didn't even counter some 'give AFK free lp' take, I ASSUMED you meant 'Lose lp' as you indeed did. I granted you that, didn't even nit-pick it.

But that (once again, strawman) is what you attacked.

Good lord , you are dense. I said lp loss to afk and partners. Do I need to specifically spell that out each time for you.

"Um , you just give lp (loss) to afker (and his partners) and let the short handed team surrender (or just lose) with no lp loss."

Is that better. Now that I hand walked you through our conversation and filled in all the obvious blanks for you ? You need help badly bro in many ways. You have this psychotic urge to pick apart peoples sentences and claim victory. Sociopath I bet.

KillerKell1 votes

You are so bad at this.

Your FIRST mention was:

"To prevent abuse. People will quickly exploit the system by queuing up with a friend then having their friend disconnect if a loss is inevitable.". In this, you suggest penalties for both the AFK and those that Q with him.

To which I bring up:

"We aren't talking about waiting until there is 1 HP on the Nexus and pulling your Router here. We're talking about a way to mitigate EVERYONE being punished when the game starts out a 5v4 due to AFK/DC."

To which you then say:

"Um , you just give lp (loss) to afker and let the short handed team surrender (or just lose) with no lp loss."

Which is EXACTLY what we suggest... but then you come back with:

"Um , you just give lp (loss) to afker (and his partners) and let the short handed team surrender (or just lose) with no lp loss."

It was YOU that omitted the Q Partners, which was exactly the original premise that we presented. Then you realize your mistake, but we are the ones that are dense.

To which still doesn't explain why Q Partners should be punished for some one being AFK at the start of the game. NO ONE is suggesting Loss Prevention for AFK/DC in an attempt to dodge a Loss in a Game that's moved forward.

But no, you don't want to answer to that (because really there is no logical defense against it).

**So I ask again, one final time, what is wrong with allowing a team... to include those that may have Q'd with the AFK... to escape penalty for having some one AFK/DC at the START of the game, long before any outcome has been worked towards? **

I can imagine a lot of people unplugging their router when things are not going well.

Denthis54 votes

The person who leaves still receives the full punishment (Receives Loss and gets closer to low priority queue in DOTA) so the unplugging wouldn't save them. it would just guarantee their loss but the 4 people left behind would be saved. This would only happen if he dc'd early though. If you plug pull 20 minute mark you're just screwing everyone.

It would also discourage early rage quits or toxic bs where people afk early to punish their team by ensuring that only the leaver is punished and the not the team.

Meep Man3 votes

I may not be correct on this one, but don't anyone that queued with the AFK also get a punishment?

The Last Django27 votes

While this would suck if your friend is prone to anger and rage-quitting, perhaps it would be in the best interest of the community despite personal friendships. It would reinforce the dynamic between friends that you're not going to keep playing with them if they keep raging and leaving games, as it would have the same negative implications for you as it would for them, under this system. Maybe half the LP loss for you since it really isn't your fault, but I still think it may have a positive effect on the community. A kind of "tough love".

Titanium7014 votes

Punishing everyone who Qed with the AFK is something that NEEDS to be done! Abuse is forseeable if not.

(Maybe not the full punishment, but it has to bigger than a mere loss)

Additionally, the leaver should not allowed to Q again for at least 30min - 1h, once again to prevent abuse. And the system needs to be forgiving, a short DC sucks but does not loose the game, so i guess up to 5 minutes is manageable. ^^

The only problem with punishing the people playing with the guy that leaves is that if he legitimately had network problems, then people get slapped on extra punishment for no reason, although that being said, there is problems and repercussions for every system

Rather than punishing you for having queued up with a friend who breaks the rules, DoTA makes you share the punishment if you queue with them afterwards.

It's unfair to lose LP if you have a friend who disconnects, it's fair if you decide that you'd rather wait 20 minutes before queuing than doing so alone.

Here, I will copy and paste what I said to another irrational hater...

Damn, I guess the more harsh you are the more upvotes you get. You are probably not old enough to remember the time when this was a problem in ranked games. Like Age of Empires for instance. I probably haven't played enough video games.

Age of Empires franchise = Whole team is punished if someone disconnects. If you are in a tournament and you disconnect, you automatically lose. Some would try to find a way out of this so they wouldn't have to lose points though. Their method? Constantly unplug and replug the router until the game crashes and the game will crash with no result. Oh the days of the P2P systems.

Call of Duty 1, 2, and 4 = Modded servers to allow your teammates to come back. If they don't come back within an allotted amount of time, you were forced to forfeit. In many cases, the tournament holders would not even allow you to continue the match if you were a man down.

League of Legends = Well, I haven't played League of Legends competitively but it is pretty much the same story. Everyone gets punished for 1 disconnect.

These are the only franchises where I enjoyed PvP if we don't count things like Demons Souls. However, in Demons Souls, people would unplug their router for an advantage in a fight. If you see your enemy across the room from you standing very still, then approach with caution because he probably unplugged his router and is about to plug it back in and backstab you.

This is pretty much it as far as my experience with competitive games is concerned. My first message was in no way an attack like people are making it out to be. It was just a curious statement that OP and I have already maturely handled many hours ago.

Soooo pretty much in my experience from most games I ever played, either the whole team gets punished for an afk or the game will end with no result. No one wins even after a hard fought 5 hour game.

No it doesnt. League system is better imo. You lose LP if u have afker in your team and lose. You gain LP if enemy has afk and you win. And most players gain more LP than they lose. And statistically you will play more games with afker in enemy team than in yours. System isnt balanced, it tips in our favor.

Denthis27 votes

I'm not talking about a ranked system which is what LP relates to. I'm talking specifically about handling games where there's an afk person within the first few minutes.

Either way the system shouldn't be balanced around hoping you get free wins off afk players. They should just have remove the negative impact of afk players.

Don't try and turn this into some DOTA vs League argument when it's more about how we can make League better in general.

Yeah, if a person leaves (or just doesnt connect) in the first few mins of the game, how could this be abused? Literally just have it where if there have been no deaths on either team, and a player (or players in some cases...) is absent within the first 5 mins of the game, cancel it after 2 mins of that player being absent or afk. Boom, people are not frusterated, can not be abused, and the toxicity in games are reduced a lot

So wait, for those of us with uncontrollably bad ping, are doomed to never get matched with someone because of this? I'm not understanding how this works. Since I have high ping every night until about 9 or 10, does this mean that I have to wait until this times to even have a CHANCE of playing with people because this would just cause everyone to disconnect and not want to play with me? No thank you, I'd say I'm still capable of playing with high ping to the point of NOT being a liability to my own team, and I certainly don't want other people haivng prejudice towards me AND the power to act upon it.

JVP152 votes

I have a pretty bad ping as well, but I think it isn't as much about ping, I think it is more about when someone is completely AFK, or completely disconnected so they aren't even in the game anymore. So, unless your ping means you are constantly disconnecting for 5-10 minutes, I think what the author is suggesting wouldn't even effect you! However, it would punish people who intentionally ragequit or disconnect, whether they have high ping or not. Now, if your ping is so high that you cannot play the game properly, but you don't know that until you get into game, that seriously sucks. Riot needs to fix that.

Sassmast3r1 votes

Oh okay, phew! I was thinking this was something that would check in the background to see if I had somewhat high ping, and then automatically tell everyone else when it isn't their business.

And no, my ping isn't Riot's fault, it's my ISP. I live in the countryside, and since as of late, more people have been moving into my neighborhood, there simply isn't enough bandwidth to provide everyone at all times of the day and night a solid 8 donwload and 2 upload speed. And so, between about 3:30-11:00 P.M. everyday (Ironically when I get home from school lol), my ping goes up by about 100 or so due to everyone trying at once on my road to use this internet. In order for my ISP to give everyone the internet they are paying for, they need to throttle some users (like myself) to redistribute to said people.

It sucks, I don't know why they would choose to continue selling their internet service when they don't have enough to sell anymore, but now my area is irrevocably damaged and will pretty much never have better internet until there are either other options for ISPs, or the two that are popular in my area are given more bandwidth.

JVP151 votes

Darn, that kinda sucks. I know 100 definitely ideal. If we are talking about internet woes, then I get to complain about my painful download speed. I mean, 1 MegabitPS isn't too bad, but anything over a gigabyte is a several hour endeavor. Thank god I only have 64 ping though.

Sassmast3r1 votes

Oh I get 8 download and 2 upload! And I get 64 ping too! I just have an ISP consisting of conniving thieves xD
