It happens a lot in Normal's. I don't know all the details, so don't take this as fact, but from what i've heard, Normal games are matched more based on Summoner Level, and number of Normal game wins.
I always thought you had a normal MMR and a ranked MMR since it was 2 different settings. I may be batshit insane tho, excuse my language.
That could be it, but idk. In a single night of playing Normal's, be it solo, duo, etc etc, I'll get matched vs unranks one game, plat/diamonds the next. Sure, it could be that the plat/diamonds never play ranked, so they have a lower Normal MMR, but it just happens way too often.
