Fixing the AFK Problem

Impek··5 votes·3,104 views

So as everyone who plays LoL they have encountered a lot of people just randomly afking or not connecting. I think this needs to be fixed I know I am not the first to post about this issue but I think I might have a solution to this problem.

If a player does not connect or is AFK for more than the first 5 minutes of the game then...

  1. Game ends and team with the AFK gets loss forgiven except the player who was afk.
  2. Enemy team gets a few LP for their time wasted.
  3. Player that was afk gets punished.

Just played a ranked game and my adc went randomly afk, did not dc, just went to fountain and sat afk there. Ofc we lost the 4v5.

Does riot do anything with afkers/leavers? NOPE!

People that afk in ranked deserve special instant punishment like blocked from playing ranked for 10 games or something and have their LP reduced to 0.

I totally agree with you... its frustrating losing a game because you have someone leaving. That is why Riot should step it up and start punishing people.

They do, with 2 week suspensions.

The only way this would work is with harsh penalties against the AFK. I am completely on your side that something needs to be done. It boggles my mind how even players on my own team are somehow sympathetic of the AFK, and won't report them. I report people who are lagging. Not because I think people who have issues on a rare occasion should be punished, but because people who consistently have a problem should not be queuing for Ranked.

I totally agree with you. If you are having internet problems you shouldn't be allowed into rank

when riots servers went from great to complete shit i too used to report on people lagging out but then realized its most likely riot's side thats fucking up since everyone has prolly ran into the, for some reason lol wont run but every other damn game in existence works just fine.

By all means, if someone's internet crashes mid-game, then they should totally be banned. You don't know if it is a rare occasion or not, and even with crappy internet, I get 80 ping and 40 fps on average, and this isn't lagging (for me it seems clear). But if Riot became more strict, most people would probably lose their first few accounts to being banned out of the game. How would you like to restart the game because your internet has problems once or twice a week?

Seeing as how a lot of the disconnects are due to Riot server issues, I don't see how your proposed "solution" is going to help anything.

Impek3 votes

It stops the game at five minutes if a player isn't connected and why punish the whole team because of one person?

So it's still Riot's fault?

Honestly, Riot could copy what Dota does, allowing you to control an AFK champion.

This would require a pretty heavy engine rework, most likely. It COULD be done, but it would require an investment of at least several months for whatever part of the team does engine work. Since the engine is already in place, they're probably working on something else now. We don't know what, but Riot would have to delay whatever-it-is for an extended period while this was in the works. People get angry over the smallest things... would be a pretty big risk.

It would be a wonderful thing to implement and would help people MUCH more than it hurts, but it's a risk that I doubt Riot is willing to take.

Impek1 votes

But they could implement a simple system that tracks players, for example if a champion has achieved these 5 thing in 5 minutes then the game should end and Loss forgiven given out and the player who was afk gets punished no matter what his/hers issue was.

  1. No cs in 5 Minutes
  2. No Mana consumption
  3. No health lost
  4. NOT MOVED OUT OF BASE
  5. not bought any new items. if they achieve all that Game ends and player punished.
Fredart1 votes

Oh but think of the increase in feeding and the rage when people try to decide who gets what item.

Rock Rockburgh1 votes

Not quite how it works. The original implementation was to allow players to directly control the hero of a DC'd ally. The vast majority of items can't be shared (transferred) between heroes. Some consumables can, some low-to-mid-range items can be held for regen passives, but not used or sold, and one item has its own mechanics (becomes sharable after the holder dies, but can't be manually dropped).

So "who gets what" isn't really an issue-- the issue is that League's engine doesn't allow for control of multiple units.

I totally agree, there should be a system in the game that is able to detect a AFK player and give the team a loss prevented if they happen to lose. I am pretty sure every player would appreciate this.

Impek1 votes

Yeah i agree with this. A company big as riot you'd think they would have such a system in place but no.

The problem with the punishments is that the reasons for disconnect aren't always because of the player. Storms screw with internet connection sometimes, Riot servers are unpredictable, irl emergencies do happen (my brother flooded the kitchen once,) you can't crack down on people who're just trying to play the game like you and that crap happens. Wouldn't all of you look like dunces if you randomly disconnected after implementing whatever punishment you wanted for afk's?

I agree with all of you that afk's kill the game, but unlike games like FPS' or MMO's etc. there's a ranked system built into this game which makes players connected to fill in for the afk unfair since the champion couldn't be accounted for at pick or the player gets stuck with a champ they don't like, or (if you have something like Teambuilder) there's not enough players who've decided to fill in for that champ to fill the spot. The ranked scene causes many problems that other games that've found ways to handle afk don't have to deal with. There's no precedent for Riot to follow as it's unfair no matter how you look at it.

It's probably not that Riot isn't like "wtf do we do about afk's" it's more like "what can we do?" only to be met by dead silence in board meetings. Honestly, think about it for a minute. What is a fair way to compensate for afk's? You can't fairly punish them. Period. That requires a case-by-case basis and none of it can be proven. No one has the time for that. How then do you make it fair for the other players affected? That would seem easier, and indeed, it is easier than impossible, but it's still never going to be perfect and even with a fill-in system, there will be complaints of things being unfair, it's bound to happen with a system like that. League of Legends isn't entirely skill-based like other games, you can't just find a good place to camp, stand back-to-back and fend off the enemy mob until someone else connects and joins your team, if you do that in LoL you lose all your turrets. The reason these discussions keep coming up is because no one has found a solution to the problem yet -if one can be had. LoL suffers uniquely just because of the way the ranked system is set up in conjunction with the highly team-dependent nature of it. You have to deal with a lot of issues in tackling the problem that may not reconcile with the state of the game. I see no way to fix it without altering the game significantly which isn't something anyone wants. Its accessibility to ranked is a virtue. The team-aspect though will always cause problems in conjunction with rank though whether afk or not. That's just an issue of team-based games of any kind. There just usually isn't the weight of rank being put on it in other games barring tournaments in which afk'ing isn't an issue.

If something awful happens like your house get's flooded, a tornado uproots everything, your power goes out, you have to drop everything to help a family member - there's a ridiculously high chance you won't even be able to power on that computer for anything while the ban is taking place. Something like a 12 hour ban isn't going to effect you, at all, and is going to be the last thing on your mind.

Also, the way bans currently work is Riot looks at a player that was reported several times for the same thing, they don't automate harsh punishments from a single report. If you had a freak accident in regards to something punishable with a 2 week ban, by the definition of a freak accident it won't happen again - so you'll only have that 1 game with reports.

Accidents suck - but they're also a complete non-factor in terms of punishing leavers.

Completely untrue. Internet cuts out far more often than the power itself. Also consider laptops.

If a 12 hour ban is all we're talking about, what's the point of this discussion? 12 hours isn't a deterrent.

The way it currently works. Please read my post. I'm addressing the fact people want the punishments changed to illicit some sort of beneficial response from afk's.

I agree with you and I never at any point argued that.
