My Idea for Talon, the Blade's Shadow
So I play Talon
. I love Talon. He's my favorite champion. A while back he was nerfed. Riot removed the silence on his E. To me, this didn't change my love for him; however. it did make him a bit harder to play. His old E was a scary ability. It consisted of a point-and-click silence that blinked you behind the target and amplified your damage. And while I'm sad that it's gone, I understand why it happened. It wasn't that Talon was OP. Talon's silence was removed because no champion should be able to output such a high amount of damage without some form of defense or retaliation. It isn't fair to others playing the game. So I understand why Riot removed the silence. What I don't understand is how they went about replacing it. Talon's new E is essentially the same except instead of a silence, it now has a mediocre slow. To add to it, it's still called Cutthroat.
"Ouch! My throat is bleeding! I've lost the ability to move as fast for 0.25 seconds. Whatever shall I do!?"
Silly? Yes, but jokes aside, I feel Talon was not properly handled. It looks as if the nerf was just a "quick-fix" and that Riot would "properly rework him later" but that's a really poor way to handle balancing a champion. It burdens those who play the champion to be stuck with a sub-par version of the champion they enjoyed playing. It's like if your favorite cookie is chocolate chip and I replace every chocolate chip cookie you ever get with an peanut butter cookie. Good? Maybe. The same? Not even close. This makes me propose an idea, not just for Talon, but for champion balance in general. I feel that any champion subject to re-balancing should remain un-nerfed but also disabled in ranked queues until a very well thought out re-balance has been thought of. The champions won't be able to give anyone "freelo" for lack of a better term, will allow teams to ban a slightly greater variety of champions (not a lot but a thousand games without the same permaban makes a difference), and still allow players to play their favorite and unchanged champion in normal and Team Builder games, where both teams have the champion available and rank is unaffected. I'd be open to more ideas or further expansion on the idea.
Now to the main point; Talon. Talon reminds me of a mid-version of Rengar
. They both have targeted gap-closers (Talon's E and Rengar's passive), the both have Auto Attack modifiers (Both their Q's), a skill shot slow (Talon's W and Rengar's E), and an Ultimate that makes them invisible. He also reminds me a bit of Zed, but not quite as much as Rengar. This makes Talon's identity in the League a bit lackluster. He just feels like a sloppy combination of those two champions: Rengar, the stealthy bruiser/assassin; and Zed, the bursty AD mid.
Let's look at Talon's strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: Strong all-in, a solid gap closer, two slows, and a low cooldown ultimate. Weaknesses: No reliable escapes (Ult cd a bit too long to be reliable), mana-based, and squishy (to be expected).
He's no doubt strong as far as damage goes, but he ultimately lacks what any assassin needs: some form of survivability. Leblanc
has her passive, her W, and her ult; Zed
his W and his ult; Rengar
his W and ferocity W; Akali
her passive, her shroud, and her ult; Evelynn
her W and her ult; Fizz
his passive, Q, and E; Riven
her W and her mobility with Q; Yasuo
his E, passive, and ult (gives Yasuo his passive shield instantly); I could go on but I hope I've made my point. Talon has two means of survivability, his E and his ult, but they aren't very reliable. Talon doesn't get the Katarina treatment meaning he cannot E to anything that isn't an enemy minion or champion; or a neutral monster. Talon also doesn't have his most reliable escape until level 6 and it's not very reliable. That's Talon's greatest weakness as an assassin; once he goes in, there is no going back. Although this can be looked at positively, as it does require the player to play smart, I view it negatively because many other champions are not punished nearly as much for the same mistakes. Kassadin blinks every 7 seconds, Katarina can Zhonyas and wait for an assist so she can E out, and Kha'zix has his ult to wait for resets.
Now let's look at Talon's skills.
His passive: Essentially while someone is cc'd, your auto attacks against that target do 10% more damage. Useful but not effective. Talon can only keep a target slowed for a little over 2 seconds so the passive is really only useful for 2-3 auto attacks if you focus on utilizing it (which you shouldn't). It's not terrible, but it's not good either.
His Q: An auto attack reset that applies bonus damage and a bleed for 5 seconds. This skill is really good. It scales well, and it's decent damage throughout the game. It's worth noting that his passive does not apply to the bonus damage from this ability.
His W: Ranged conical skill shot that slows. Does good damage and is Talon's primary damaging spell. Little damage early game, but hits hard mid and late game.
His E: Targeted blink that "slows" the target for .25 seconds. Also amplifies damage against said target for 3 seconds. It's good but pales in comparison to what it used to be.
His Ult: Basically his W but in a circle around him, doesn't slow, and does more damage. It also grants him brief invisibility and a movement speed buff. Low cool down too making it extremely good. Definitely what makes his kit.
What I dislike about Talon primarily is his E, his passive, and his lack of uniqueness. I love this champion to death but I feel like he could be so much more without making him broken or OP.
My idea for Talon is a way to give him an identity within the League. I envision Talon as the iconic stealth AD assassin with a kit focused on utilizing stealth to the fullest. And it would really only require changing two abilities: his passive and his E.
New passive- Sneak Attack: Talon deals an additional X% damage for X seconds after entering stealth. This ability does not stack. Becoming invisible again before the duration runs out refreshes the duration.
New E- Backstab - Talon blinks behind his target, becoming invisible and gaining X% movement speed for X seconds.
Together, these two skills would make Talon the ideal stealth assassin, actually relying on it for damage and utility. The passive's duration would scale with level and the E's time of invisibility and increased movement speed would scale with the amount of points you've put into it. Ideally, the duration of the passive would be less than the duration of the invisibility at most levels until 18 allowing players to discern whether a Talon would plan to play aggressive or passive by the amount of time Talon was invisible. The E should also never grant more move speed than his ultimate does for fairness.
This would add a bit more depth to Talon as a champion. Also, the E would have a name that actually made sense :P It may be required to shuffle some numbers around on both my proposed ideas as well as Talon's already existing kit in order to keep his damage at roughly where it is now, but that'd be fine so long as he didn't actually lose any of his usual damage.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I really hope Riot reads this and at least thinks about it for a while. I'm open to comments and suggestions from anyone, but please be respectful to me and to others.
TL;DR: I want Talon to be the iconic stealth assassin of the League and give him more of a balance of offense and defense without making him OP. Riot plz. lol
