Tanks have to work in tandem with another player to bring the assassin down.

Variks the Loyal2 votesA properly built tank can't be bursted by an assassin in a single rotation, provided the assassin isn't fed. Combined with tanky items like Sunfire Cape and Thornmail, a tank can 1v1 an assassin.
The tank also locks an assassin down so high damage dealers, the ADC and APC, can kill the extremely squishy assassin.

The idea is that the tank makes himself a nuisance in such a way that forces the assassin to blow his CDs or reveal himself to address the tank, allowing the heavier damage dealers on the tank's team to light him up.

Say we take all the other stuff that contributes to a win out of the equation: Sieging = Pushing = Teamfighting = Map Control = Snowball Potential etc etc... when it comes to a fight, Assassins are the only real counters to Assassins.

You are effectively asking what counters a champion designed to burst a target very quickly, then get out.
In teamfights, tanks and supports do; they CC the assassin, letting their teams damage dealers destroy them while they can't react. In a 1v1 (WHICH MIGHT I REMIND YOU LEAGUE IS NOT BUILT AROUND), bruisers and other assassins do. Bruisers, because they can survive the assassin's burst and have enough damage to kill, and other assassins assuming they play right can kill before being bursted down.

I mean, why are assassins given such powers? Back to old school D&D... Tanks should have more armor to withstand the assassins' onslaught and kill them off. And have lower MR so mages can easily melt tanks. Why they have to complicate stuff?
Tanks > assassins > mages > tanks

I mean, it's pretty bad when they release a new assassin and the LCS players build him full tank because he's got that much utility.

that's my point exactly. All these guys here r saying Zed cant beat Malphite... because they haven't tried other builds on assassins.

Sir Yamazuki1 votesDepends on the assassin, Le Blanc, who is 100% reliant on abilities won't kill a tank quickly, but the assassins like Rengar, Zed, etc don't care since they can just auto attack a tank to death quickly.

However, "Countering" doesn't mean "killing". I'm pretty sure the only class of champ that can outright 1v1 and kill an assassin class champ (that has even farm and KDA) is another assassin. There are champs that can easily win a lane against assassins, like 
. Heimer can slow the progress of enemy assassins like

, because he can out farm them, out poke them, and then put them behind enough so that when they jump on him mid-game he can kill them. But even for Heimer, if the enemy is roaming and picking up kills, or Heimer doesn't pressure enough and Talon gets equal farm, Heimer is going to be in trouble.

Which is why you stick with your team because DPS assassins are also the worst assassins in teamfights, which is why they usually end up splitpushing instead because they are so tired of getting kited or insta-deleted from the slightest bit of CC.

Kal Vas Flam1 votesThis game really isn't a "x roles beats y role" type of game. It's really more about champion match ups. A Malphite or Ramm will shit on Talon and Zed all day without blinking. Those same champs will struggle mightily against a Leblanc or Ekko. Tanks like Ali and Shen are for peeling and sometimes engaging while tanks like Sejuani and Zac can only offer soft peels, but have strong engages.
This just isn't a black and white type of game is what I'm saying. It varies and you have to learn what counters are and how to use them, while also synergizing with your team. This is the whole nightmare with Soloq, because coordinating a proper match-up with strangers is very hard to do with such little time to prepare.

AP or AD marksmen with a penetration item deal steady streams of pen damage and are not constricted by CDs. If they can kite even a little bit they will shrek the tank
Mages OR Assasins. Tanks don't even lose 50% HP to a single rotation. This means the caster will need THREE rotations (at least) to kill the tank. This gives the tank usually over 20 seconds to kill the caster which usually is more than sufficient
The circle is complete. Marksmen do steady streams of damage but are extremely squishy. Most casters have a way of quick engaging and doing full HP of marksman in damage in a single burst (late game). This means they can kill and ADC before he/she can lifesteal back up.
