Where is Rakan going?
There was mention that Riot would be working on adding more defined secondary roles to champions that are otherwise stuck in a single position. I'm hoping Rakan is somewhere on that list and I think he'd be a great support jungler.
I think Rakan is incredibly fun and I've loved him since he came out. I immedietly tried him out as a solo laner and jungler to see if I could find some success and he's always lacked a little something to carry him.
I'll say this now: I think buffing his AP scaling isn't the way to go just to make him a better laner. He has some good base stats on his abilities and his damage is fair considering all the utility and CC he comes with too. I don't want him to suddenly become a burst mage that can't be dealt with 1v1 let alone a support that out scales his ADC like Brand and Zyra.
The only change I can think to make would be to adjust his passive so that auto attacking neutral monsters would also lower it's cooldown and completely remove the "hitting an enemy champion with an ability" clause (which hardly seems to make a difference). They would have to choose between pushing the lane and getting the shield faster and I think all other changes might hurt bot lane too much.
I think he'd be a healthier addition to the jungle. The biggest change that I think would be necessary would be to let his Q proc the heal on at least the Red and Blue buffs (in addition to the Dragons, Rift Herald, and Baron). Good jungle champions need either great sustain (like Warwick) or rapid AoE clear speeds (like Rek'Sai) to be successful. Considering Rakan's W is his only AoE spell (that isn't his ult) it won't be the latter. Letting it proc on all large monsters (similar to the ones that you get Dark Harvest stacks from) might be too good but I think that it would be worth testing as well (although that might be too much sustain). Changing that wouldn't even change the lane phase other than starting your jungler with a healthier clear and getting a random heal off on a cannon minion when possible.
To bring back a point I made earlier: his passive shield is on a 40 second cooldown level 1 and we can't expect that to save us from the mighty chickens on our first couple clears. The cooldown is also only decreased by AA or hitting enemy champions with an ability. Even if this only applied to the Epic Monsters as well I think it would be a great addition and encourage early game objectives like Dragons and Rift Herald. Adding both the Q proc and the passive adjustment might be too strong together though.
Any thoughts on this or other champions you want to see in different roles?
Also I highly recommend my On-Hit Duelist Rakan build: Guinsoo's Rageblade, Blade of the Ruined King, Phantom Dancer, Frozen Mallet and Merc Treads. I like to go Nashor's Tooth for the AP mixed damage and cooldown but Black Cleaver is also a great choice if you want more of an AD focus. Phatnom Dancer can also be switched with Bloodthirster. Press the Attack, Overheal, Legend: Tenacity, and Last Stand with Revitalize and Font of Life. It's terrible in team fights but soooooo much fun when you run into champions 1v1 once you catch them. They will actually sit there and fight you for days before figuring out you are getting a three hundred health shield ever ten seconds on top of all the healing. Then chase them down with Frozen Mallet or BoRK and watch a sea of question mark pings from your teammates. Take it into the practice tool or bots game and go wild.
You have yet to see the true form of our bird god.
