Currently, I'm Plat V, I stopped playing ranked before the season ended because I was on a massive loss streak and wanted to stay in Plat. I'm still Plat, and if I drop back into Gold during preseason, will it effect anything? I don't believe it will. But I wanted to clarify.

Deep Terror Nami1 votesOnce the season ends then your rewards are set in stone (with the minor exception for a match you queued up for just before Ranked went down).
You can still play Ranked as usual during preseason but it won't affect your rewards. What it will affect is your MMR, which determines your placement for next season; so if you want a better placement you can work for a higher MMR, but you can hurt it too.

"soft reset". Idk about plat, but I assume its more of a hard reset for everyone. Isn't the highest rank a challenger/master/diamond receives plat 1? I guess it can be considered soft but in most cases seems like players drop a good amount right at the beginning of the year.

Yea true, unless you go like 2-8. But from what I have seen its usually only 2-3 divisions. It really sucks for bronze players though. My cousin almost got silver in season 4 and went 8-2 in his season 5 promos and got bronze 4. lol he was pissed, but since they reset ranks there is no where for bronze players to go except bronze. With many many many silver players dropping into bronze, and some Gold bronze is pretty nasty early in the season. Then a few months in silver becomes the super duper uber clusterfuck that it is.

The soft reset basically compresses everybody's MMR to a smaller range. So you're kinda right that people at the highest and lowest ends of the spectrum will see the largest delta between their old and new MMR. But it's not like players who were Master last season will suddenly find themselves paired up with players who were Gold before. You will see a little more diversity in skill early in the season, but it shouldn't result in miserable games.

It almost seems better at the beginning of the season. LIke yea.. your ranked drops but its a new meaning because everyone dropped. LIke me going from mid silver to silver 5, everyone I pretty much played with was gold the season before. Most of those games were more enjoyable. Later in the year you get freshly placed players being put in silver with 3-7 records and multiple smurf accounts, which makes the experience much different. At least at the beginning of the season everyone is playing their mains and around people of similar skill, at least for the most part.
