Can Ornn upgrade items without purchasing them for himself?

I'm testing ornn on the PBE and it only give the option to upgrade the item if I buy it myself. This is in training mode with no allies. Can someone please explain this. (I think that maybe you can wait until your teammate buys it and then upgrade it for them).

I'd be able to give you an answer... if there was a way to GET INTO PBE WITHOUT BUYING AN ACCOUNT FROM WARWICK!

Just think of the upgrades like any item purchase. As long as you have the gold you can buy it, no special requirements needed.
