More Champions means more bans

PalakoI··46 votes·2,977 views

Since the pool of champs has nearly doubled since season 1, its becoming increasingly harder to ban out champs who are broken. with only 6 total bans unbalanced champs tend to get by, jax, yi, lucian, nidalee, kayle, braum, leblanc, lee sin, evelyn, morgana, yasuo, evelyn.

Please, please, please rito, extend the number of bans in ranked.

This way you cant ban out all of the certain types of characters in the first volley of champs and would allow for a wider selection of bans. You would have pick strategies like banning some of the op people first, then ban out lane counters while building your team as you go! I feel if we initiated this in out draft pick that it would lead to other tactics of picking than just banning out the only people someone can play on a team. We should initiate something like this soon. There are just too many champions and too many combos you cant stop while assembling a team.

Also this can be changed, we do not have to copy, but this system they have works well.

Also for reference: there are only 107 "heroes" in dota 2 currently. We have 119 champions, why should we not have this?

This actually seems rather cool IMO. I will say banning out a summoners champion pool can be fun to watch in LCS (Like when they got lux into the game the other day by banning out Xeiweixao i think it was' champion pool) But I feel when it comes to ranked for us normal people we need a different strategy than somehow knowing the enemy and who is good and their champion pool. Plus it would help with people just picking counters whether they know them or not.

Walkin Check1 votes

I think this would be interesting to see in beta and watch how it changes the game.

ploki1221 votes

It's pretty staright forward. In solo queue you would see more "OP" champions and more clunky team comps. Additionally, I believe Yasuo's win rate would actually be inflated and his pick rate reduced. In LCS/5s you would probably see a much bigger variety of bans, dynamic picking of champions (mid isn't the last pick 90% of the time anymore), and more specific strats. Additionally, pocket picks would probably now become a thing.

I am so strongly agree with ya! That old BAN school needs to be modernized. Especially in soloq. Cause most of the time first summoner never listens and just bans whatever he wants and not what team wants. That is not right.

Let everyone ban 1 champ before they pick something. I think its fare.

I am GROOT. Maokai :P

ploki1221 votes

Actually, that would still be 1 player doing the bans. You can have bans be 1 per player instead, but I have troubles seeing that end up in a positive experience. 1st and 2nd pick would always be expected to ban the op champions, and failure to do so (especially for a less played counter pick, like banning Malphite when you wanna play Vayne) would induce annoyance/flaming. Then, the last pick needs to ban every single remaining stronger-than-average picks. If a bad picks get through (and there are like 15 of them right now), it's all gonna fal down on the last 1/2 picks.

Also, I feel that it would lead people to feel they have the right to boss around other peoples for their bans, since it's more of an "equal footing". Right now, with the "Dravem does it all" kind of bans, people will suggest bans, and be done with it, since they weren't lucky enough to get that first pick.

Drunk Old Man5 votes

I've been suggesting this off-and-on on the PBE boards as well as the old forums for.. nearly a year now. I can understand the downsides of having more bans (I proposed 1 more per team, or 8 in total) since it would allow some players to be singled out, but we have 120 champions (including Gnar) and picking just six of those leaves a lot of room to wiggle. The high percentage of static bans (like Kassadin, Braum, etc which are upwards of 80% in high elo last I checked) just plain kills any strategic value banning has in Solo Queue.

The problem with singling out one player is pretty much only a problem in LANs/events where you know who's on the other team. And, even then, if we got one extra ban, you could only ban 4 of their champs. I don't know many people who have a champion pool smaller than 5 champs... aside from HotshotGG, who, as I've said multiple times, suffers greatly because of that.

And, dare I say it, if you really have a champ pool that small in competitive play, you deserve to be singled out. You're basically asking for it. More bans promotes more strategy, as well as larger champion diversity, which is something Riot obviously wants.

ploki1222 votes

That's a standard misconception, but you can already ban out a 5-champion pool player with 3 bans. As long as you're blue side, you can choose to ban out their, for instance, mid laner. If their mid's champion pool is mainly Ziggs, Kassadin, Syndra, Lux, Gragas, Nidalee, Leblanc, and Ahri, their champion pool is reduced to 5 after the patch hit Nidalee and Gragas. Then, you ban Syndra (which can appear like a standard "respect" ban), Ziggs and Ahri. They will most probably ban Kassadin, so you don't first pick it, which leaves Leblanc and Ahri open. You pick Leblanc, countering their Ahri pick, and banning out their mid player who, 1 week ago, had a pretty respectable champion pool.

EVen if you don't directly counterpick it, you can easily guess what champion they will pick and prepare a strat accordingly. 8 bans would mean that every patch week is a clunky week.

Sneak Dog1 votes

It takes a lot of time and effort to keep a champion mastered up to competitive standards. If you ban out 3 of one persons champion, he suddenly has very little flexibility in what kind of champion he wants to play. You can ban out an entire TYPE of champions with more than three bans, not just those specific ones that counter you.

Gunnlaug4 votes

There i no single OP champion. I'll start off by saying that. Some champions appeal to certain people and they learn how to play them and the people who learn how to play them will learn their weaknesses. Every champion is balanced despite what you may think. When a champion has a weakness, they're balanced. (Their weakness can be having too many strengths) It sounds absurd but really, There is a counter to every champion. Jax is countered by malachite, Yi is countered by champions with snares and stuns, Kayle's damage is easily negated with Cc and MR, leblanc is mobile but squishy, one hard cc will completely shut her down. evelyn is only a threat to teams with poor warding, etc. Learning to combat these "overpowered" champions is all in the learning curve of league. Just give it some time and you'll see what I'm talking about.

A Doorknob1 votes

Unfortunately I do not agree. A plentiful of champs are ''overpowered.'' Problem is, we can't tell who or why due to the fact of the "counter" system. How do you tell how overpowered a champ is when all we do afterwards is pick it's kryptonite? You can't. The unfortunate fact is, plenty of champs are based around picking each others counters to overpower them and this is part of the problem within the system itself. The game should be based around skill and strategy and cooperation but instead it's based on skilled counters to each other. I think part of the problem is how the system even works. We shouldn't get to see who the other side picks while keeping bans effective. By blinding us from seeing what the enemy pick I do believe the game would be more strategy/skill/cooperation instead of simply picking counters. Riot could effectively make proper adjustments to items and champs so they're not ridiculously strong from early to late. Right now a lot of champs do not get picked due to the system that it has in place. We should be complaining about OP TEAMS but instead we complain about OP CHAMPS.

Nameless Voice2 votes

This is the wrong way to go. If a champion is stronger than every other champion in his role, he is overpowered, regardless of if two other champions completely nullify him.

Proper balance should always be based on counterplay and not counterpicking.

Sometimes champions are overpowered because their numbers are too high; this happens, and is generally fixed fairly quickly. The real problem comes from champions who are overpowered because their kit has little to no counterplay. They are also the hardest to fix, because they need a change to their skillset in order to be balanced.

frenchdavid504 votes

This is looking at it the wrong way. OP champs are champions too, and part of the game. Play them or ban them, whatever. Trying to shut out the "Overpowered" champs is not the right way to look at it. We needs less OP champs, not more ways to get rid of them.

ploki1221 votes

This is looking at it the wrong way. If there were finally less main offenders, that truly skews your chance of winning if they're on the other side, people would end up banning for preferences. At that point, with the amount of different champions (which offer different styles), 4-5bans per team is not unwarranted.

Hexflashed3 votes

Their first step needs to be immediately putting a halt to changing masteries every season. While this makes things "fresher" it most certainly is annoying to find certain things broken (perseverance needed the nerf, and I felt this immediately). Don't get me wrong, I love innovating and being one of the first to spot things when it comes to theory crafting, it does nothing for the health of the game if they continuously shift the meta to a different 10% of champion pools.

Their second step is (and sorry to say this) that they need to STOP making new champions at a rapid pace, or altogether until they shut down the FoTM problem. Right now, they have accomplished this slightly but it seems to be always something game breakingly broken (hello Yasuo / Braum walls), and creating a much more frustrating experience. Honestly, we have enough champions right now, and not enough of them are even in a good spot. Again, when I say not enough, I mean 90% of champions are being thrown out of the meta and becoming unviable. We all have expressed this concern with lackluster same boring picks (except Voyboy, love him) from LCS, but the concern is much more dire.

Sadly, the only thing from Riot I have felt been doing an amazing job has been the visual updates / clarity team. I understand game play is a hard shell to crack, but this has been an ongoing problem for years and needs to be solved before people just shift to another MOBA. The more champions they add, the bigger the problem is just going to get.

It's not just about bans, but the problem with the FoTM train being 10% of the champion roster. It just doesn't help with new champions like Yasuo and Braum making life a living hell with a broken game mechanic that effectively nullifies SO many champion abilities with one good wall.

To me, right now, League honestly is about FoTM and effectively ruining someone else's experience from one simple pick. Infuriating, and not innovative. This is from someone who loves LoL.

Dar19823 votes

those walls are easy to negate. play melee, or side step the wall/get behind braum.

Zondervain5 votes

Oh yea, easy in theory. But in practice it is much more difficult to pull off, because, you know, they can move too.

Dar19821 votes

Except the wall is left facing where it was cast. sorry them moving makes it no more effective, it will still leave them wide open from behind. Outplay and out position with either more move speed or a well placed flash. Learn to bait them and make them waste the wall. Never have your whole team trying to run face first into Braum's wall, he can only move to block so many directions at once and is locked facing the direction he was looking when he cast his wall, Yasuo's wall is stationary, he can not spam them. Have your forces flank and win.

ReggieFilsAime1 votes

It doesn't matter what game you look at. The pool of characters used in competitive play is always extremely small compared to the actual character pool.

Walkin Check4 votes

To me one of the best things about league is how it changes. I would never want them to get things a certain way and then just leave it forever. That would cause league itself to become stale and boring. I think its important to keep the game fresh. As far as making new champs I don't think they should stop. It seems that your frustrated with having to adapt and change the way you play, but I think adding new ideas and being forced to change is awesome.

Porta Nova3 votes

If you're looking to have champ select make less of an impact on the game, increasing bans is a really bad way to go. The more bans you give the more likely you make it for teams to find ways to abuse it that allow them to ban their way to victory. When a lot of champs are "OP", it means they're pretty equal so none of them are. More bans means more counters that can be banned.

Having balance in a game with so many champs is really difficult, but Riot does a pretty amazing job of it. Have a little faith. I don't think Kayle is considered OP at all anymore. She just got buffed this last patch after a huge nerf. Leblanc's nerf hurt her alot. Eve and Lee were just nerfed pretty hard. Lucian and Nid just got reworks. Braum just got nerfed again. Quit worrying so much about who's the current "OP". Play who you want. Eventually the popular champs will see a nerf and/or your favorite champ will see a buff. Or items will change and give your favorite champs an advantage. Garen might not be popular, but utterly destroys Jax. Tristana wasn't even close to meta until a ton of buffs and an overall adc item buff (now she's just been nerfed). Know how many times I've been told Poppy was "broken"? More than I can count. She's not even remotely meta.

Teh Song3 votes

more ban, more time wasted.

ploki1222 votes

Personally, as long as the ban structure doesn't change, I don't see any point in raising the number. Competitive would be wrecked if you have first pick + 4 bans, that means you can remove 5+ champions from a single person's champion pool. Let alone Volibear jungle, it's Poppy we're gonna see this time.

On top of that, it would mean that you cannot ban contested picks, because you're making your champion pool even smaller. If Curse would ban Yasuo against LMQ (XWX is a good Yasuo iirc), LMQ could simply ban every single mid that Voyboy played fairly recently and then roll with a free mid lane.

Folley4u1 votes

I do think something similar to the DOTA ban system could work, and add a bit more counterplay. Tristana As for making champ selection a bit more diverse perhaps a tier system could be used, with the most used/banned/overpowered champs already being banned at the lower tier automatically by Riot based on statistics and reset every few patches. This way there would be a lot more champion diversity, and it won't be so annoying playing against the same champs, allowing for underused champions to get some competitive use.

Saigo2 votes

I think that because only a select few champions will always be in the meta, more bans are not necessary; that is, the number of champions do not necessarily correlate to the number of bans needed. (just my opinion)

Metro Trusts Me2 votes

Lol than why don't you buy those champs and use them?

Hotdogs2 votes

i dont really agree, there arent really many broken champs, more bans creates more permabans and more total role bans and delays nerfs

EMOFRATPARTY1 votes

What exact number are you looking for?

Sensei Kinkou5 votes

Yeah I highly upvote this but just maybe 8 bans instead of 6. Although those 2 more bans will really come in handy, if your first pick you may try to ban out everyone that counters you and only you.

EMOFRATPARTY1 votes

Another thing to consider is lobby time. If max ban timers ran out for picks (and they do), the possibility of that happening more than 8 or so times (4 on each side) could be a bit excessive.

Beardedheathen1 votes

This! I would support adding to the number of bans if they did a sort of lottery system. Each player gets two points to put against champions the 6 (or 8) champions with the most marks against them are banned for the game.

ploki1221 votes

This would simply further bog down the bans. I'm pretty confident Kassadin would still be 80%+ banned nowadays if that system was in place because no one would end up not bannign him because no "stupid captain" tried leaving it open first.

REPORTING TEEMO5 votes

Urgot whats preventing someone from banning all decent supports or adc's etc, aside from the one they are wanting to use?

Walkin Check2 votes

I didn't even think of that. Your right, if they added more bans then someone could just cancel out a whole role which could be ridiculous

fuzzlewuzzle72 votes

it could be good or bad but the thing is that would also force a meta change which i feel needs to happen in this season i dont like the wave clear meta i enjoyed the assassin meta and the tank metas. the games were never too drawn out due to a ziggs just destroying minions the whole time or even a xerath.

Jinxed Amulet1 votes

I think Riot should test out 8 bans first in PBE. Letting each player have 1 ban might be too much of an increase initially, but I think 2 is fair to adequately cover the influx of new champions since the first season. Theoretically, I think Riot should strive for each player having 1 ban after we've reached 'X' amount of champions available.

vxepic2 votes

I agree with LeVonte. I would like to see more bans with the sheer volume of champs at this point. However! I wouldn't like to see more than 8. If they keep on this path of releasing a champ every quarter or so, a 10 ban setup would almost be overkill. Yes there are always going to be "OP" champs and some of them will ALWAYS get through.

TL:DR 8 would be nice.

Walkin Check1 votes

yeah its not like right now there are 7 op champs and blue side gets which ever one isn't banned

Phoenix Kotori 19 votes

Personally I think the captain gets all the bans should be done away with and each player is simply given one ban in soloq, and ranked teams/normal draft/LCS should remain as they are.

ploki1221 votes

I actually like the "captain ban" mode, because it makes all the blames fall on one person. What Iusually do as first pick is ban 1-2 champions I don't want to be against, and ask what last ban the team wants, proposiing 1-3 options. At that point, they discuss/vote and I ban whatever comes out.

If you make 1 ban per person, you will have 2 nocive situation instead of 1. First of all, all players banning before "you"(in this case, "you" refers to anyone banning) will have to ban the "insta-ban" tier, because otherwise they're just trolls. Who the hell bans Morgana while Maokai is still open huh? Then you have the last ban, who has 2+ bans left open but has to choose between them, and no matter what people will call him idiot for not banning Poppy once I pick it on the other team.

Basically, hav=nding all the bans to the same persons facilitate the logistics of banning and limits the amount of flame imo.

Niezere1 votes

I disagree with the idea that letting all the blame fall on one person limits the amount of flame. I think it compounds it. If each player had 1 ban as opposed to one player being in charge of all the bans, that makes banning a team effort. The current system is prone to toxicity because even if the captain makes all good bans, someone on the team may be unhappy with the result. This is not to say that each player having 1 ban would be a perfect system. I think that would play out rather negatively as well, actually. Seems to me like each player would just ban based on their own wants/needs rather than think of the team as a whole. I propose a system in which there is a captain, but the captain has a more limited freedom of choice. Rather than allowing him to ban from the full selection of the other teams champions, give the 4 other members of the team a vote on who to ban, then allow the captain final choice. Just a rough thought.

sonicmna1 votes

I agree with the points made from The Infamous Ivy.

Champions have counters, calling a champion OP can usually go back to a lack of knowledge to the mechanics of that champion or the match up dynamics.

There should be a balance of bans based on the total champion pool, these champs are not "broken" if they were we would have an emergency patch to disable the champion (like when using Maokai's ult with a Guardian Angel caused the game to crash).

Bans can be used strategically to counter individual players or teams in the competitive circuit, I find for some ranked games bans happen because of a bad experience in the last match.

Walkin Check1 votes

I think that's looking at things kinda blindly. You cant look at jax and say " oh yeah malph counters jax so hes not incredible strong or broken". Malph might counter in laning but jax is so op for how out of control he can be in the late game. Its like full build he can 1v1 just about anybody, so you just run a 1-4 split push and the enemy team has to send at least 2 people to deal with you(which still may not be enough if the jax is fed) leavingthe other side in a 3v4. Or if they only send one jax could just dive and kill then take tower. Also, malph isn exactly good in lane right now. His mana cost are too high and he already doesnt have a lot of mana.

sonicmna1 votes

And I think you are taking the points too simply. There are item counters for champions as well as counter picks.

A fed champion is a problem in any game, some champions have a strong early game, mid game, or late game. I go back to my point about game mechanics and match up dynamics.

Krombopulos Pyke1 votes

double eve but this is true even if its 1 by each side or some perma ranked bans for example jax´s been a perma ban since season 1, y not disable him in rank games? or evelyn?

lee E nerf was a must am happy with dat but some champions are simply broken they HAVE to be disabled from ranked atleast

Walkin Check1 votes

Jax hasn't been perma since season 1. Last season he wasn't banned all that much.

Paenitentia1 votes

Lol, Jax is no where near deserving of being a perma ban and especially not removed from rank. Plenty of champions would beat him to that title, though I don't think any champ should be totally removed from ranked play.

I feel instead of more bans, they need to work on getting any champion with a 30% ban rate or higher to a point that they're not choking out other picks.
