How does flex queue matchmaking work?

I played a game as adc and had a bronze v support. She litrerally had no idea how to play her champion, while I struggled to 2v1 my lane against a plat/silver duo. How is this matchmaking fair? Riot says that flex queue placements are going to affect your solo/duo mmr, but this matchmaking system is horribly uneven.
