Riven is an advanced champion. She has a brutal learning curve to be efficient with and she requires advanced knowledge of when and how to engage to really shine. Renekton, on the other hand, is much more simple to play thanks to his sustain and tankyness, and suits a beginner better.

Since you are new to the game you may not know about Riven mains. Don't be a riven main. Lol jk, but seriously look up their abilities and decide for yourself. you know what you like to do as a top laner and you can see what skill set meshes better with your play-style.
