Someone Gold or higher tell me whens a good time to base race?

Ok so their team pushes mid and pushed it all the way to our inhibitor to take it. All the while we had a Lucian pushing the top lane up till inhibitor but wasn't able to take it and a jarvan who pushed bot lane toward their last tower at the same time. The exact same time the enemy team pushed to take mid inhibitor. They claimed they were making the right call. I was dumbfounded that they would choose to not defend our inhibitor but ok. Then they pushed top lane all the way to take the inhibtor while 4 outta 5 of the enemy team took our last 2 turrets in bot lane all in one swing and instead of coming back to help the whole time they were claiming to base race. No one could teleport to them and they got pissed off at me for not following them 9/3/3 Garen but i was trying to help our Annie defend bot. Both Lucian and J4 died to towers. So seriously? Is this a good time to base race? or was i in the wrong for not "running half way accross the map" to help them base race? Btw I was never top helping them push I had died,spawned then went bot to help defend.
