Champion Mastery System Upgrade

I'm sure most of you already have a bunch of champions at Tier 5 Mastery. The Mastery system is supposed to let others know which champions you are good at and it's working fine - the more games you play (/win) the better you should be at that champion.

But there's something I don't really like in this system - the ability to spam a champion and still get lots of mastery in them regardless of your skill. Yeah, you're getting better by playing a champion a lot but in my opinion, you shouldn't get Tier 5 by simply grinding mastery.

Here is my suggestion on which could eventually be the better way the system should work. If you have some other ideas, feel free to bring them in the comments below the post.

Leveling your champion's mastery to 3 should be as easy as it is to reach 5 right now (gain 800-1500+ per win and ~100 per lose). After that, you will need to get at least B- grade for every game you win with that champion to actually earn mastery. If you win with lower than B- grade at champion tier 3, it should give you as much mastery as it gives you now upon losing (or a bit more / any at all). If you lose a game with grade lower than B- you should lose about 700 (if not more) mastery. Everyone has bad games but you should perform well enough for your champion tier in the majority of your games to level up your champion's mastery. If you lose a game with higher than B- grade, it should take you a minor amount of mastery (like 100-200 for example).

I hope I explained it well enough for you to understand the idea. It should be the same for tiers 4 and 5 but of course, you will need at least A- for tier 4 and S- for tier 5. In this way, only people who have some decent skill in the champion / perform well most of the times can have 4/5 mastery tier. It looks like the LP system for ranked but showing how well you play certain champions.

Thanks for reading. Have a nice day!

I don't agree that Champions Mastery points should be deducted in a loss. It's not some continual circuit that players should be forced to continually try to climb--that's why we have ranked in the first place. That, and it's not fair to punish people that don't play a single champion all the time just to keep their mastery up. Doing so would also run completely counter to the long-term goal of giving players a champion pool rather than maining a single champion.

You also have to consider that the expectation is that once players reach their appropriate rank their winrate should be roughly 50%, so if you reduce Mastery on losses that don't have a B- or higher (which aren't rare by any means, especially if you play a wider pool), you'd constantly be losing your masteries unless you're still climbing or unless you're playing normals just to upkeep that rank.

I don't think it's a bad idea to require a decent performance to make the transition from lower ranks to higher; that might be a good thing to add to future ranks that can be climbed. But I definitely wouldn't want to see any form of mastery decay or punishment.

I agree with your comment, I just don't think it's normal that 1/2 of the people you meet in your games have Tier 4-5 and only a few of them are actually skilled at their champion.

That's fair, and I agree that the climb seems really easy. It's more of a grind than anything, and it makes a lot of sense that that top tier mastery gets reserved for people that actually put up good performances. I'd like to see that put in place.

I agree with this to an extent, but I don't think it's realistic. Champ mastery doesn't really matter much, so fine-tuning the process of acquiring it seems like a wasted effort. And the grading system for matches is already fairly obtuse, so basing more rewards on it would lead to frustration.
