Nearly every wukong I have faced so far have all went the assasin build and rarely go top, usually jg or mid, their combo is usually enough to one shot everybody who isn't tank or hard bruisers. They tend to go youmuu's > boots > duskblade> bloodthirster and whatever other assassin items there are. His combo E > Q > R is enough to 100 - 0 squishies and then can safely W away. You said his counterplay was the red trinket; that shows wukong's position every 1 second, you can't target him unless you have aoe abilities. Course there's the pink ward, but late game you cannot do anything about him. He will E > Q > R your team.

Edit: His harass combo is usually stronger than the enemy's harass, which allows him to win most trades. Then again, his mana costs are high, which doesn't allow him to spam his harass, I still think it's heavily in wukong's favor. He can also dodge stuns/roots with doing his W and taking a step back. it's basically a spell shield that allows him to go invisible. It's very strong against morgana and blitzcrank/thresh and such.

He's also hard to kite because he can gapclose, and if a wukong is going to gapclose you, you can know for sure he will try to kill you.
