How do placements work?

So, last season i got placed in bronze V, but thats fine, i wasnt that good and lost 7 of my 10 placements. over the season i climbed my way to Bronze II before the ladder reset.

this season in placements i won 5 and lost 5. i got placed in Bronze V again. how does this make sense?
