Punishments for dodging ranked

So I have started playing ranked seriously pretty recently and I can't help but wonder why players get punished for dodging in the champ select screen. I'm sure there is some reason for this, but what is it? I find it odd that if there is someone with a bad attitude and intentions to ruin the game that a player is punished for dodging under those conditions. A time out for playing makes some sense so you aren't just filtering through matches until you find a dream team, but taking LP and counting as a loss in promos? Those are supposed to indicate a player's skill, and I don't think leaving a match so your entire team doesn't have to suffer a loss reflects poorly on a player's skill. Anyways, I'd like to hear what people think, as I'm sure some good reasons will get thrown my way.

if you belong in your elo, playing a ranked game and losing it would cost you around 20 LP. If you dodge, it costs you 3LP with a little timer. the reason people get punished is because dodging wastes people's precious time and nobody likes that.

I don't necessarily disagree with that, the small amount of LP is less of a concern than the counted loss of a series. To me that seems a little harsh for wasting someone's 3 to 6 minutes of time.

well you don't need to count the seconds until you can play again. here's a tip; timers are linked to both ranked and normals, so if you get a long wait time in ranked, consider playing norms, doesnt matter if you win or lose, it's norms. soon after, your account will get 'healthier' (it's not the word im looking for but meh.) timers will be reset to 5 minutes and you can go back to ranked games and dodge.

I might have worded that wrong haha, you were saying people don't like to have their time wasted and that is the reason for punishing someone. I was trying to say that it is a little silly to put a loss on someone's promos just because you wasted the small amount of time it takes for everyone else to find another match.

i agree with you on that, in fact i believe rito should remove promos. they were originally added to add satisfaction for passing them, but NOBODY feels that way. it feels more like I survived a gunshot wound after passing promos more than anything.

I can see where you are coming from there, but riot also put the added bonus of shielding your ELO. So you can lose a couple of games at 0 points and not have you perform your promos again, which is kind of nice. You are basically running the gauntlet to have a little safety net afterwards

to each their own opinions i guess.

If there's no punishment at all, system becomes easily abusible. Players would dodge every time they see their teammate pick a champion they don't like, or enemies pick a counter. Getting to high ELO shouldn't be dependent on who dodges the best. Once players would realize how strong is that, more and more of them would keep dodging, making it increasingly difficult to ever start a game. Just like when there was no matchamking for aram and it was played via custom games.
