Quick question about Galio

Hello summoners, so I just picked up Galio for the first time since the rework as I hadn't played him yet and he seems pretty cool. However, i'm at a bit of a crossroads with what to build on him. I checked probuilds website to get a rough idea what pros usually build on him, and they all seem to go pretty much full AP. I myself have found this strategy to be very lacklustre to say the least though, is he better build as just full tank? With maybe a ROA as first item? Or is full AP the way to go?

Any tips appreciated, thanks!

Your W damage reduction scales with AP so building will make you do more damage and make you tankier. You may think damage reduction on one ability won't make you tanky enough but look at the cooldown; 16/15/14/13/12. On average you'll have 30-40% CDR on Galio meaning max W means you'll have damage reduction every 7.2 seconds. Don't forget your passive magic shield which is more useful than it may seem.

P.S. Galio has had a shit winrate ever since Rito tried to make him into an AP bruiser but half-assed it

Yeah that's kinda what it feels like, I mean his Q damage is minimal at best even with going full AP and it feels as though his only use is going around trying to land W on as many people as possible. And yeah I know he gets scaling on all his abilities with AP but some of my teammates last game were flaming me for not going full tank and instead going full AP, but I can't imagine going full tank with him would be more usefull than AP anyway.. Even though with full AP he does next to no damage

I don't know these are some pretty spicy ratios and base damages.

Yeah they may seem good on paper but to hit his full combo you have to dive in and that leaves you with no way back out, and if you're going full AP you end up extremely squishy and usually just get 1shot by the enemys. Plus that's only 2 damaging skills he has (not counting passive)

Plus his E is just like gragas' E but it can't go through walls or any terrain, and he steps back before actually going in, making it unreliable at best

Well Galio went to Riot's catholic school for reworked champions. They offered him stale ice cream in promise to make him an AP bruiser. Then they fucking molested him and he has been at a 47% winrate ever since.

Lmao, brilliant comment, that cracked me up. And yeah in this current burst or be bursted meta he doesn't seem to fit in very well, but thanks for your tips!

They generally go AP because building MR is very situational, you don't need much MR to deal with AP champs and he gains far more by going AP than tank.

From AP he gets a boost to every single spell and you can generally boost your magic damage simultaneously with item 3001
MR does boost his damage reduction a bit and he does get more shield from HP. But it just isn't worth it.

I don't play him but just by looking at the top galio players, all go roa, hextech glp or ludens into full AP.

He's just so niche compared to every other tank in regards to tank stats, but has high AP scaling which encourages squishy mage play rather than tank play

Yeah usually go ROA and then into full AP items, its the best way. He was very strong in the first 1/4 of the season but then they nurfed him a few times. he is ok now.
